Our boy Henry is still looking for his forever home. Please read his bio and consider adding this amazing dog to your family. CILRA rescued Henry from an overcrowded shelter just 3 days before he was to be euthanized.

Hi! My name is Henry and I am a 5 ½ year old, happy, healthy, small black Lab mix who weighs in at 48 lbs. I’m house-trained (my foster sister taught me to ring bells hanging on the door) and crate-trained. Some of my favorite things are people, other dogs (no cats please), car rides and head scratches that include rubbing my ears. Did you notice my ears?! They are very expressive – there are some who think I look like master Yoda from Star Wars! Oh! I also love taking walks. I often walk 2.5 miles twice a day and am ready to go the next morning. And just so you know, when I walk I’m all business … no sniffing for me, just walking! I would also be a great running partner.

I am pretty low energy in the house but am active outside. I love to run in the yard and lay in the sun. A fenced yard would be my dream come true! I don’t get on furniture but like to lay down near you. I am working on commands like sit, stay, and my leash skills. I am very smart and a quick learner so these skills won’t take long to master. I am looking for my forever family to love me as much as I will love them. If you are looking for a beautiful and loyal addition to your family, please consider me!

Duchess is a 5 year old yellow Lab who is cute as a button. She’s a petite girl, weighing about 62 lbs. She is house-trained and crate-trained, but can safely be left alone in the house. She loves to chase a ball and will bring it back, but hasn’t learned the other half of that game…giving it up! Duchess enjoys car rides and long walks. She is a bit shy when meeting new people/dogs so a little patience is needed for introductions. Cats are an unknown. We don’t know much about her history other than she was surrendered by her owner. She has been a typical lovable Lab in her foster home and is now ready to find her Forever Family. Duchess is being fostered in Brazil , IN (1 hour from Indianapolis). Meet Simba! He’s an 8 year old, 74-lb., neutered chocolate Lab who never really had a chance to know what the Good Life is all about. Now that he’s been rescued and is in a wonderful foster home, this sweet and loving boy is really blossoming! This Lab’s perfect Forever Family would have the chance for tons of daily walks (which he Adores because he’s very active and loves sniffing to his heart’s content), and to be given loads of love & attention. Speaking of attention, Simba wants it all! While he does enjoy playing with other dogs outside the home, he prefers to not share attention with another dog inside. Simba is very polite and gentle, especially when taking treats. He will gently put his paw on his foster Mom’s arm when he wants to go outside. He brings his food dish to her when he is hungry. He has learned to add kisses to expedite requests: for example: If he wants to go for a walk but is told he needs to wait a little bit, he will ask again, and give her kisses. Simba is super smart, and a very quick learner. He is very gentle, and has the manners of a prince. He is very playful and always ready for a game of Catch/Fetch. He doesn’t appear to be prey-driven: On separate occasions he has watched a squirrel, rabbit, duck, cat, and chicken pass in front of him and didn’t think twice about it. He loves to look out the window and watch the birds and squirrels. He will even fall asleep while doing that, with his head on the window sill. He loves riding in the car, and also has perfect house manners; he doesn’t need to be crated, and asks for permission before getting onto furniture. Who could ask for anything more? He’s being fostered near Chicago, IL.

Here is another update from Simba’s Foster Mom:

“Simba loves children. He has made friends with an 8 and 10 yr. old in the neighborhood. He loves to see them off to school and greet them in the afternoon. He acts a lot younger than an 8 year old Lab. He loves to run, take walks, play tug-a-war, and fetch. Sometimes I think he would play fetch all day long if he could (with time out for sniffs). He still loves to sniff. He gets the biggest smile on his face when he runs free. He’s very cute when he has a big smile on his face.” If interested in adopting please apply at our website: https://www.cilra.org/new-adoption-application/

Hazel Grace is an 11 year old spayed black Lab. She is currently on a diet to trim down her figure. She is crate trained but does not need to be in the crate when left alone in the house. She uses her crate to decompress and take naps. This sweet and loving girl loves to go on walks. She gets along great with her foster family’s other dogs and is not interested in cats. Hazel is very gentle and polite, especially when taking treats. She is very smart and a quick learner. She is playful and ready for a game of catch any time you are ready to play, and she loves to walk around the yard sniffing all the wonderful smells that are offered. She does not seem to be prey-driven. One of Hazel’s favorite activities is to go for car rides. She loves to have an open window to feel the wind blowing through fur. She likes to meet children but is hesitant around adult strangers for the first few minutes but then becomes best buds. Hazel went camping recently and loved meeting people and dogs. Spending time at the dog park was the highlight of her day. She is a spry old gal who is in great health. She’s being fostered in Bloomington, IN. Meet Elvis! He’s a sweet, loving black Lab mix who is about 2-3 years old. He’s been neutered, had all his vaccinations, and weighs about 60 lbs. He was found as a stray, running loose with a chain and padlock around his neck. Although we don’t yet know everything about him, we do know that he enjoys people of all ages and loves kids. Because of his energy, he needs a family with children who are a bit older. His ideal home would also have no other pets. Elvis has a very laid-back vibe when he’s just chilling in the house. He loves to rest his head in your lap, close his eyes, and be petted. He’s just now learning how great life can be with patient, loving people, and we suspect he may have been mistreated in the past. Elvis needs basic obedience training but does well on leash until he sees another dog, and can then be reactive. Elvis is house-trained, and has wonderful house manners – no need for crating! He also rides like a champ in the car. Elvis will need a traditionally-fenced yard, and a family with some previous dog experience and where someone is home much of the time. This sweet boy will be a great addition to the right family. He’s being fostered in Indianapolis, IN. Buddy is a 1 1/2 year old yellow Lab who was surrendered because his owner couldn’t care for him. He was kept in the garage with food and water and let out several times a day to potty. Buddy is sweet, house trained, current on all vaccines, and has been neutered. He weighs 60 pounds but could put on a little more. He is gets along well with his foster family’s four female Labs and the neighbor’s male Pit Bull. Cats are an unknown, but he does not seem very prey-driven. He is good with small children and loves everybody. He wants to be a lap dog and follows his people everywhere, seeking the human companionship he missed as a puppy. He follows his foster Mom to the barn and just stays with her. He is learning to play and retrieve, two things he never did before. He needs some help with basic obedience commands, and to not pull on the leash. He is stressed when crated, but he doesn’t need to be crated as he is perfect in the house. Buddy is fascinated by the world that he never saw before and needs a loving family who can help show him the way. He’s being fostered in Westfield, Indiana. Lily is a sweet, 8 yr. old chocolate Lab who came to CILRA from a shelter in Louisville. She has a beautiful smile and chill personality, and gets along well with the 2 Labs and cats in her foster home. Lily is house-trained and knows a few basic commands. She’d fit in well into most households – she is gentle and would be good with young children/babies and adults of all ages, including seniors. Lily is low-maintenance, likes car rides, and isn’t afraid of storms or bad weather. She doesn’t hear well, but she is expressive, communicative, and in tune with her foster Mom and canine sisters. She is very affectionate and playful with her foster’s chocolate Lab. Lily weighs 80 lbs. and needs to lose a few, but is always up for a walk and loves to saunter and explore. She may have a bit of arthritis, and appreciates carpet or rugs so she has more security when walking indoors (esp. on stairs, which she’s a bit hesitant to use). Lily also takes meds which successfully control her allergies & bladder. She sleeps through the night and BONUS is not an early riser. She’s been known to investigate food that’s been left out; Labs love their vittles! By adopting a senior dog, you will enjoy the benefits of having an amazing, relaxed companion. Senior dogs’ love and gratitude run especially deep. Like all rescued pets, Lily wants a loving family – she will give lots of Labby joy and loyalty in return! She is currently being fostered in Louisville, KY (her foster Mom travels between IN & KY frequently, and could arrange meet&greets with potential adopters in Indiana). If interested in adopting please apply at our website: https://www.cilra.org/new-adoption-application/

Miley is an 8-month old yellow Lab who weighs about 55 lbs. She loves to be around people but is also comfortable just doing her own thing. She loves to play with the other dogs at her foster family’s home, and doesn’t engage much with the resident kitties. Miley loves to go on walks and play with her toys. She’s a big fan of squeaky toys and Nylabones, and is very food motivated. She knows to sit in her crate for meal times and to sit for her treats. She knows the word “Gentle” means to take her treats gently. Miley is a very talkative pup and will let you know if she needs to go out to potty or wants to play. She is full of energy and is always ready to play, run, and keep you entertained. At night time, Miley prefers to cuddle up with one of her foster brothers on their beds. She loves to be around everyone, so if she knows someone’s home, she always wants to be with them. She’d do best having another dog in the house to play with her and keep her company. She is currently being fostered in the southwest suburbs of Chicago IL. If Interested in adopting apply at https://www.cilra.org/new-adoption-application/

Meet Rocky! He’s a 5 year old yellow Lab who is happy, energetic, and Very sociable. This gentle giant loves dogs, cats, and children and gets very excited when meeting them. He does not pull on his leash and enjoys going on walks, doing a cute little bounce up & down when he knows it’s time to go. He also loves to run, given enough room. Rocky weighs about 120 lbs. and has already lost a few lbs. at his foster home. He’s very agile and does fine climbing steps. Rocky has wonderful house manners, and doesn’t need to be crated. He’s still learning not to rush out an open door. He’s not a fan of fireworks or thunder, but calms down with a bit of snuggling. Rocky is a bit of a local celebrity, and recently visited a nearby softball park. He charmed everyone he met, from 3 years old to 90, and he quickly learned that belly rubs are The BEST. He wagged his tail at every other dog he saw. He also loves riding in a golf cart. Rocky is being fostered in Hoopston, IL (just north of Danville). This is beautiful Baylor, a 3 year old neutered yellow Lab who weighs about 60 lbs. He’s smart as a whip, very loving, and a major snuggle-bug. He is very focused on his people, and loves to hear ‘Good Boy’ and get pets as much or more than he likes treats. His foster Mom has taken her Lab and Baylor for jog/walks every morning and he does pretty well on leash, pulling just a bit. He shows a little interest when he sees rabbits, geese, etc., but not much interest in other dogs, including his Lab brother. He can be a bit mouthy when he’s excited, but is very willing to follow direction. He does well in a calm environment, and is a very quick learner. This boy wants to please his people! He’s learning to share his toys or forbidden objects more easily, and willingly gives them up for a high-priority treat. Because he’s still on a learning curve, he would do best in a quiet, child-free environment. Baylor is learning to be more comfortable in his crate, and settles after a bit. His house manners are quickly improving, too – he’s done well being loose and alone in the house for short periods. He also loves riding in the car & taking road trips. Baylor is still learning what it means to be a dog. He has overcome many challenges already, and his Foster Mom sees continual improvement. He’s currently on anti-anxiety medication and participates in training exercises recommended by a behaviorist which help immensely. Baylor has tremendous potential, and needs a loving adopter who will continue this work so he can become his Very Best Self! He’s being fostered in Union, KY. Urgent fosters needed!

CILRA Approved Foster or Foster to Adopt Needed for Chance & Shadow

Chance and Shadow need homes with approved fosters or fosters to adopt. In the two short weeks since they were picked up they've been through a lot of upheaval and stress ... many new environments, people and animals.
The boys are Lab mixes we're looking to place separately, ideally in homes without other animals. CILRA took them in on Father's Day and they've had a rough time adjusting so we'd like them to be in homes where they can have some time to decompress, relax and reset so we can learn more about them and they can become the great dogs we believe they are.
Chance (smaller dog on the left) is 80 lbs and Shadow is 84.5 lbs. They are estimated to be 5-6 years old, are up to date on shots and are intact (CILRA will pay for their neuter surgeries). They were both used to being indoor dogs and were very loved, but their owner developed serious health issues and could no longer keep them.
We would love to talk with you more about these boys if you're interested in possibly fostering or fostering to adopt one. And if you can foster right now, you can help by sharing information about them within your network. Someone you know might be able to help!
Chance and Shadow are currently in northern Illinois - transport help is available. Please contact Kate at 317-250-2091 or [email protected] and let's talk. Thank you!

Meet 1-year old yellow Lab Sage! She’s a high energy girl with a high toy (and treat) drive. Sage absolutely lives to retrieve her tennis ball and will jump with all 4 feet off the ground to catch a toss-up. She learned to catch a canvas frisbee in 5 tosses, and is an amazing athlete. While in foster care, Sage has learned to ride in a side-by-side (an off-road vehicle w/2 seats & 4 wheels), swim, play on a trampoline, and swing on a big web swing. Her basic obedience has also progressed quickly; she will now heel on leash, sit, is working on down, stay, wait, off, leave it, go in/go out. Sage also sleeps quietly in her crate overnight. She has come such a long way in such a short time! She’s super-smart and a very quick learner. She gets along well with her foster brothers, a German Shepherd and a Lab. Cats are unknown.

Sage would do well in a very active home – she would likely love and excel at agility training. On average, she and her foster Mom have been walking 30 to 40 miles per week on leash. Sage will do best in a home where someone can take her out for exercise several times every day and where she has an older, stable dog or dogs. While she is still slightly unsure when meeting new people or dogs, she is improving every day with continued socialization and practice, learning to relax more quickly around new people. Once she warms up to people, all Sage wants is to be a Lap puppy! She has been good with a preschooler child but needs supervision, as she is rambunctious. She’d do well with older kids.

Sage is a really great little Lab. She needs a moderately experienced handler to allow her to continue to learn basic obedience and excel in sport or work. She plays endlessly on land and in water and snuggles up sweetly. Sage is a 55 lb. packet of energy – with a big motor, a big heart, and who’s game for anything! She’s being fostered in English, IN. Meet Duke, a charming and spirited black Lab in search of his forever home. At 1-2 years old and weighing 70 lbs., his sleek black coat, bright eyes, and sweet disposition are sure to capture your heart. What will also capture your heart is how well this dear boy has thrived despite past horrors. He recently had facial surgery for a suspected cyst, which was discovered to be a bullet, lodged between his eyes. Thankfully he’s known only love and kindness since being rescued, and he is Always happy! Duke has been neutered and is up-to-date on vaccinations. He’s sweet, loyal, loving, and intelligent. He is very sociable, and will thrive in an environment with an active family. He’s been around all kinds of people and children ages 5-12, and did wonderfully with each of them. Duke really enjoys being around other dogs (cats are unknown), and having another canine pal in the home helps to keep his minor anxiety at bay. He’s done very well being gated in a room when his family leaves. He loves car rides and going for walks, and would benefit from a bit of obedience training. He’s a fast learner, and is working on his leash skills so he won’t pull when he sees another dog. His foster Mom says Duke is also getting better at going to his “place” and wait quietly when company arrives. He’s an active Lab, but also loves to relax & lounge in the sun. Duke is not a fan of being in a crate, but doesn’t really need one, because he has lovely house manners. He’s an active guy; a traditional fenced yard will be helpful so he can get plenty of exercise off-leash. Duke is full of promise and has so much love to give the right family! He’s being fostered in the west suburbs of Chicago. If interested in adopting apply at our website: https://www.cilra.org/new-adoption-application/

JJ is a 3-year old spayed black Lab mix with cute white spots on her chest and the tip of her tail. She’s a friendly girl who likes attention but can also “chill” in the home. She ignores the cat in her foster home. Although she’s mostly laid-back, she does enjoy a romp in the backyard. She likes to chase a ball or toy but hasn’t learned to retrieve and bring it back. She’s curious about her surroundings, especially when she hears birds or other noises in her foster mom’s yard and nearby woods. JJ weighs 87 pounds and has excellent house manners. In fact, some might call her a “couch potato”. She goes into her crate and sleeps quietly at night or when her foster mom leaves the house to run an errand. Due to her size and strength, she needs some help learning how to walk nicely on a leash. JJ would do best in a home with a sturdy fenced yard. Although JJ previously lived with another dog, she needs to be the only dog in the home. JJ is fostered on the west side of Indianapolis. If interested in adopting apply at our website: https://www.cilra.org/new-adoption-application/

Hello! My name is Henry and I am a 5 ½ year old, happy and healthy black Lab mix who weighs 48 lbs. I’m house-trained, crate-trained, and I love to run in the yard and lay in the sun. I’ll need a fenced yard at my forever home. Some of my favorite things are People, other dogs, a head scratch and car rides. Unfortunately I don’t get along well with cats. I am pretty low energy in the house and am active outside. I have a typical Lab personality: your personal space is also mine! However, I do not get on furniture and will lay down near you. I don’t beg but have explored the counter – not to take food but just to satisfy my curiosity. I don’t make much noise and rarely bark. I am learning to play with toys and balls and I love bones. I am working on commands like sit, stay, and my leash skills. I am very smart and a quick learner so these skills won’t take long for me to master. Bottom line is I am looking for my forever family to love me as much as I will love them. Are you are looking for a beautiful and loyal new addition to the family? Please consider me! I’m currently being fostered in central Illinois. If interested in adopting Henry apply at our website: https://www.cilra.org/new-adoption-application/

Meet Poppy! She’s an affectionate and gentle black Lab mix who is about 3 months old. She’s very active and, like any pup, a bit mischievous! She is quickly learning house rules, and is clever enough to ring the bells that hang on the doors when she needs to go out.

Poppy is super smart and learns very fast. She already knows “sit,” “no,” and “down” (laying on the ground). She walks well on and off leash. She does need a fenced yard, as she has been an escape artist – but she ran straight back to her foster Mom after she got out.

Poppy is all puppy – loves to run and play. She plays well with the other dog in her foster home – it took her a while to get him to let her curl up and fall asleep with him but she was persistent. She would lay down away from him and casually work herself closer and closer until she could gently put her paw on him. He relented!

Poppy is teething, and wants to chew and bite things, just like any puppy. Loud noises scare her – especially the vacuum and loud trucks. She rides very well in a car and likes baths (which is good since she’s also very attracted to water, dirt and mud!). She’s being fostered in Monticello, IL. If interested in adopting Poppy apply at our website: https://www.cilra.org/new-adoption-application/

Ruth is a gorgeous 1 year old silver Lab. She is very happy to meet new people and dogs. At 95 lbs., she’s a big girl, and should slim down a bit. She needs to work on her leash manners but responds well on a gentle leader. She would benefit from basic obedience training. Ruth loves to chew on chew toys, bones, and string toys. She also loves to fetch a ball. Ruth ignores cats, and plays well with the 5 year old female Lab in her foster home. They can get a bit carried away wrestling around, so they have to be supervised when they are in play mode. Ruth is crate trained; she sleeps through the night in her crate and is crated when her foster dad leaves to run errands. Ruth would do best in an active house with older children, as she doesn’t realize her spatial relationship to others and can be a bit excitable. She would also do well in a house with another dog. She has plenty of playful energy that needs to be released. Ruth is being fostered in Fisher, Indiana. If interested in adopting Ruth, apply at our website: https://www.cilra.org/new-adoption-application/

Karl needs a Hero – could it be you?

Karl is a 5-year old chocolate Lab mix who is neutered and up to date on shots. CILRA saved him from euthanasia because he has that typically lovable Lab personality and we think he deserves a chance. Can you help us give him that chance?

Karl needs a safe, quiet home where he can relax, decompress, and start heartworm treatment (which CILRA will pay for); we’re looking for an approved foster or foster to adopt to help him. Since he hasn’t been in a home for at least two months – maybe more since he was originally found as a stray – we don’t know a lot about him and what he’s really like. The one thing we do know for certain about him and have heard from literally everyone who meets him … he is a lover! Very friendly, super sweet guy. He doesn’t know a stranger! He also loves car rides.

Because Karl hasn’t had the chance to adjust and just relax from being in a shelter and then a boarding facility – both noisy places that have their own versions of energy and stress that can impact any dog’s behavior – we haven’t had the chance to get to know Karl better and find out what he’s really like in a home. And one of the things we’re unsure about is how he does with other dogs. That information is really important to potential fosters/adopters because many of you already have dogs. We get it.

Karl appears to be somewhat dog-selective; cats are unknown. He didn’t get along with his first foster’s small dog (although he was only there for a day or so) and the trainer at the boarding facility thinks he would be fine with bigger dogs, especially those who are calm and tend to keep to themselves more. He’s easily overwhelmed and may have a touch of dominant tendencies (not aggressive – just wants to be in charge). This is what we think we know about how Karl does with other dogs. So if you have dogs and want to help Karl, let’s talk about that. It would be helpful if you have the ability/space to keep the dogs separated to give Karl some time to see how things go once he’s had a chance to get comfortable in a stable environment.

We’d love to talk with you about Karl if you think you might be able to foster him. Or if you can’t foster right now you can help him by sharing info about him within your own network. Maybe someone you know might be able to help him!

Please call/text Kate at 317-250-2091 or email [email protected]. Thank you!

If interested in adopting OakleyOakley is a 2 year-old female, spayed black Lab. She totally has that Lab personality and Lab ‘wiggle waggle’ when she greets someone. Oakley loves people, and would love to have another dog in her forever home, as she is used to having a buddy to play with (she does play rough). She is not good with cats. She loves her toys and wanders around the house with one in her mouth. Oakley is house-trained and crate-trained, and does need to be crated when left alone because she’s still very much a puppy and sometimes gets into things she shouldn’t. She’ll also need a fenced yard. Oakley is being fostered in Brazil, IN – about 1 hour west of Indianapolis. , apply at: https://www.cilra.org/new-adoption-application/

Kate is a gorgeous 5 year old charcoal Lab. She is housebroken and crate-trained, sleeping quietly through the night in her crate. She is spayed, weighs 73 pounds and is current on her vaccinations. She is learning to be an indoor dog and is making the adjustment very well. She loves to chew on bones and chew toys. She likes to destroy fluffy toys (much to the dismay of the other dogs in the house). If she is bored she will chew on blankets, but doesn’t touch the blankets in her crate. Kate is learning not to counter-surf. She isn’t really interested in playing with balls or tug toys. She also isn’t keen on playing with the other dogs in her foster home. She prefers to chew on her bones and lay near her foster Dad’s feet. She follows him everywhere – especially if he’s going to the kitchen. She enjoys car rides and behaves well in the car. Kate is a Very strong girl. She walks in a harness and is doing better, but still has a way to go on her leash manners. She would excel with formal training, as she listens very well. She gets along well with other dogs and isn’t bothered by cats. She is great with other people and children. She greets new people politely and respectfully as a good dog should. She likes to give kisses and is learning to accept hugs. She has learned that she likes belly rubs.
