Our store of the month for August is ! This store has been a staple of Goleta, California, since 1941. In addition to reptiles and amphibians, the store is known for its birds (hand-fed conures & cockatiels, along with finches, canaries, and parakeets), freshwater fish, and their small mammals (fancy rats, mice, and hamsters, which are all bred in-house). Pet House frequently does community outreach, and the local elementary school kids do an annual field trip to the store to meet the animals! If you're in the area, Pet House is definitely worth a visit!

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Heiko Bleher, a true pioneer in the fishkeeping hobby. Heiko was instrumental in introducing many of today’s most beloved aquarium fish, including the rummy-nose tetra and Boeseman’s rainbowfish. In addition to his contributions to the hobby, he greatly advanced our understanding of many freshwater and brackish ecosystems, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire aquarists for generations.

The attached video was filmed by the Museum of Aquarium & Pet History (moaph.org), good friend and prolific aquarium history writer, Emiliano Spada. Emiliano filmed this the last time he visited Heiko and sent it over to congratulate Gary on the new MOAPH museum. Being this is one of the last videos of Heiko it shows his lifelong love of the aquarium hobby and how he continued to explore and collect aquarium fishes right up to the end of his life.

Our July Store of the Month is none other than in Charlotte, NC! Founded by college friends Michael & Patrick, this reptile haven is home to over 120 species bred in-store—including rhino rat snakes, leaf-tailed geckos, and even a two-headed corn snake named Rock & Roll. They also stock oddities, preserved specimens, and all the supplies you need to keep your reptiles thriving. With a second location opening soon in Wake Forest and nationwide shipping on the way, they're only getting bigger. Show them some love this month!

Big moment in the greenhouse! We caught one of our red-footed tortoises laying a clutch of eggs, proof that good nutrition and proper calcium go a long way. Our Zoo Med Turtle Bone™ is a natural source of calcium that helps support strong shells, healthy egg production, prevents overgrown beaks, and curbs unwanted chewing behavior. Plus, tortoises love it!

The other red-footed tortoises are always a bit too interested in the large white calcium snacks dropping into the nest, so they also provide an excellent diversion from the laying female!
