Today we're setting up an Iguanarium® for a young male Banana Iguana!
These guys love to climb so we're going to fill his enclosure with tons of robust cork branches and hollows.
Banana Iguanas will spend a large portion of their day sitting under intense sunlight so to provide the proper basking area we're using a double dome fixture with our 150 watt ReptiCare® Infrared Heat Projector and our 90 Watt Repti Tuff™ Halogen to shoot for a basking temperature over 100 degrees.

Recently, we haven't been getting any breeding activity out of our Banana Iguanas, and we think the culprit is our male who's gotten used to being the only guy around. So, we're gonna try and add some competition to the mix.
To do so we're gonna roll out an Iguanarium® for his son to live in, so the two can see each other but not physically get in contact with each other.
In the wild, males of this species are territorial and will defend both their territory and females from other males.
In part 2 we're going to build up the younger male's new enclosure!

Today is all about the Burmese Star Tortoise! This little guy hatched several weeks ago and we were lucky enough to get the whole process on camera!
We collected the egg on 10/17/23 and sent it into what is called a diapause period, where the egg is kept in a cool environment for a few months to simulate the same cold season it would experience in the wild which helps the baby tortoises sync up and hatch with the most favorable seasons.
During this period, development is slowed but the process is essential for hatching healthy baby Burmese Star Tortoises.
The egg was kept under these conditions until 12/13/23 and was then transferred into a warmer incubator, where it hatched on 3/7/24.
In his first 2 months of life he has been shown to be a ravenous eater of leafy greens!

Day 4 of International Turtle and Tortoise month! The Spiny Hill Turtle!
This incredible species originates from Southeast Asia where they spend their days foraging the jungle floor for fallen fruits, invertebrates, and vegetation to eat.
The babies hatch out with a super sharp ring of spines along the edge of their carapace which is how they got their name.
These spines are excellent for thwarting predators and to help the animal camoflauge among the leaf litter.
Throughout its range, this species only ever experiences 2 seasons the entire year: the wet and the dry season.
Thus in order to trigger breeding, we use overhead sprayers to simulate the coming of rain, which has led to some breeding success here at the facility!

These turtles love temperatures hot enough to cook an egg!
This is the Savanna Side-necked Turtle, one of the largest species of turtles we work with here at the facility.
While males average on the smaller side, females can grow up to the size of a dinner tray!
In order to provide a proper nesting site and basking spot for this species, with a surface temperature which often exceeds a whopping 140 degrees Fahrenheit, we use three 150 watt Repticare® Heat Projectors!

Let's talk about The Pancake Tortoise; a species with one of the most unique shells in the entire turtle family.
Not only are their shells remarkably flat, akin to a pancake, but they're also flexible!
This species developed tiny holes in their shells which allows them to flex without cracking, allowing them to squeeze into the tiniest of rock cracks to avoid predation.

Caiman Lizards are incredibly inteligent reptiles which makes them the perfect subject for target training...when theyre motivated enough.
Thankfully our Can O Snails often does the trick as these guys are voracious Mollusk eaters in the wild! They will often accept a variety of other invertebrates and fruit as well.
We use target training with him in order to perform health checks with ease and to offer enrichment which keeps his active mind working.

April 2024 Store of the Month - New England Herpetoculture
Our store of the month for April is New England Herpetoculture! Husband and wife duo Mike and Jessica run the business together and focus on being a bioactive specialty shop. They originally launched this unusual business model as “online only” back in 2012, but launched their in person store in 2022.
“Our goal with our new Plainville (CT) showroom was to help people with an active curiosity about animals & bioactive environments learn about professional grade husbandry, vivarium design, and plant care. Sharing the creative process with our customers 1-on-1 has been a great experience. The environments that we help folks create are more enriching for animals, and have the capability to be sustainable and self-cleaning in the long term. It's a wonderful feeling to have a positive impact on the local enthusiast community and their animals.
The store has also allowed newer customers that are just starting out to ask questions and learn from our experienced members of staff. When folks leave the shop feeling confident about a terrarium project, we feel like we've done our job. We try to make the whole process as fun & enjoyable as possible.”
There are a few species bred in-house at New England Herp, and these are mostly passion projects for Mike:
“I'm a huge fan of New Caledonian Geckos. Gargoyles, Cresteds, Leachies, and Eurydactylodes are some of my all-time favorites due to their ease of care, personalities, and propensity to thrive in living terrarium environments. As far as difficult projects go, our Mantella, Glass Frogs, and Vietnamese Mossy Frogs have been ‘about ready to produce offspring’ for about a year now. We'll have some eggs one of these days!
We work with these animals because we genuinely love doing so, but I should mention that we aren't really a pet shop. We don't buy & resell animals, and even the sales of creatures born in-house aren't a significant part of our business model. We carry a ton of herp supplies and feeders, but our p
Our sales team was challenged to make the best designed #terrarium in a @snake.discovery build off. First they competed in a series of #survivor games to win an advantage, and then they put their skills to the test in transforming their identical terrariums into unique scapes.
