Opening as a small, family-owned aquarium store in 1973, That Fish Place-That Pet Place has been serving central Pennsylvania aquarium enthusiasts for over 50 years! Branching into more pet categories in the 90s, the present store is an 88,000 square foot experience unlike any other that hosts customers from all over the country! Along with carrying a full line of supplies for dogs, cats, birds, fish, reptiles, and small animals, the store also boasts an experienced and educated staff to help their customers to create the Ultimate Pet Experience!
As their namesake would imply, they have a massive fish room, with over 35,000 gallons of water and offering over 500 species of marine and freshwater fish and invertebrates. They really are ‘That fish place’! While in the fish room, be sure to check out the custom 20-foot acrylic coral tray! The store also employs a number of marine biologists to answer any questions you may have when contemplating your fish/invert purchases.
Right outside the fish room, you can find Pirate’s Cove! Pirate’s Cove is a 2,000-gallon, saltwater touch tank that gives customers a chance to touch real live stingrays. Come in on the weekend for their feeding shows and QA sessions.
In addition to their impressive fish display, they of course have something for ALL other aspects of pet keeping from their small pet corner, reptile room and aviary to their onsite dog training and adoption center!
The thing that really sets That Fish Place apart from other pet stores are their EVENTS! Most weekends and even some weekdays you can find them hosting a plethora of events to cater to their customer base!
• Pet Shows
• In-Store Demos
• Rescue meet & greets
• Microchip clinics
• Bug Bar for the reptile customer, complete with free samples
• Freshwater Fish Swaps
• Frag Swaps
• Pet Photo Days (Easter, Santa, Halloween, etc.)
• Reptile Invasion
• Kids Week

These are just a few of their MANY events, for a full list check out their website!

Recap of our experience during the eclipse yesterday!

08/04/2024

Our store of the month for April is New England H**petoculture! Husband and wife duo Mike and Jessica run the business together and focus on being a bioactive specialty shop. They originally launched this unusual business model as “online only” back in 2012, but launched their in person store in 2022.

“Our goal with our new Plainville (CT) showroom was to help people with an active curiosity about animals & bioactive environments learn about professional grade husbandry, vivarium design, and plant care. Sharing the creative process with our customers 1-on-1 has been a great experience. The environments that we help folks create are more enriching for animals, and have the capability to be sustainable and self-cleaning in the long term. It's a wonderful feeling to have a positive impact on the local enthusiast community and their animals.

The store has also allowed newer customers that are just starting out to ask questions and learn from our experienced members of staff. When folks leave the shop feeling confident about a terrarium project, we feel like we've done our job. We try to make the whole process as fun & enjoyable as possible.”
There are a few species bred in-house at New England H**p, and these are mostly passion projects for Mike:

“I'm a huge fan of New Caledonian Geckos. Gargoyles, Cresteds, Leachies, and Eurydactylodes are some of my all-time favorites due to their ease of care, personalities, and propensity to thrive in living terrarium environments. As far as difficult projects go, our Mantella, Glass Frogs, and Vietnamese Mossy Frogs have been ‘about ready to produce offspring’ for about a year now. We'll have some eggs one of these days!

We work with these animals because we genuinely love doing so, but I should mention that we aren't really a pet shop. We don't buy & resell animals, and even the sales of creatures born in-house aren't a significant part of our business model. We carry a ton of h**p supplies and feeders, but our primary specialties are bioactive terrarium supplies & live plants.”

At home Jessica and Mike also keep mourning geckos, gargoyle geckos, leachies, several types of amphibians, and a ball python.
Mike originally got into reptiles as a child, when he would catch frogs, snakes, salamanders, and toads during walks around his grandmother’s pond.

“Those are some of my happiest childhood memories, and are the experiences led me to become an amateur h**petoculturalist throughout high school. I didn't attend my first h**p industry expo until I was in college. The internet was in its infancy back then, so quality husbandry and care information was much tougher to find. Having the opportunity to learn from real experts at the expo absolutely changed my life. Once I knew we could do better for these creatures, I really wanted to make a difference.

Shortly after that, I started reading about more advanced Dart Frog husbandry, which led me to understand the basics of live vivarium design. (Now called "bioactive terrariums") Back then, dart froggers were the only ones who had mastered the art of live vivaria, and I absolutely fell in love with that hobby. Once I realized I could combine my interests of horticulture & h**petoculture, vivariums became a lifelong passion for me.”

Mike hopes to develop the store by adding a classroom and starting educational programs, while also increasing plant and product options. Already the store works with a local VOAG (vocational agriculture) program, and has lots of custom equipment like CNC machining, 3D printing, glass cutting, welding, woodworking, etc. to create terrariums for offices, zoos, museums, universities, and the general public.

Make sure to show this store some love this month by visiting them in person, or checking out their website: https://www.neh**petoculture.com/

Our store of the month for March is DFW Reptarium in Plano, TX! Store owner David Spicer has had a lifelong passion for animals, and paired with his background in construction, he’s been able to create some stunning store displays.

In those displays are their myriad of store pets, including Banana the sunglow boa, Professor Plum the Guyana red tail boa, Biggie Cheese the trans pecos rat snake, Gus the sailfin dragon, Tinky Winky the Monkey Tailed Skink, Potato the blue tongue skink, Teri the crocodile monitor, Aries the Chinese water dragon, Sally the African grey parrot, Mango the blue and gold macaw, and many more. Of these pets, David says the crocodile monitor and the birds tend to be more challenging than the others to work with because they have moody days and it’s important to be able to read their body language.

They breed several animals in-house, including leachies, green basilisks, Chinese water dragons, chahoua geckos, ball pythons, and various colubrids. They also offer custom builds, maintenance, and boarding to their customers, as well as school tours, birthday parties, and offsite events.

In his free time, David saturates his life with more animals, and has several dogs, cats, inverts, and pet rats at home. He also has a passion for cars, and all his employees enjoy the outdoors. As a kid David would spend his days outside flipping rocks to see what reptiles he could find, and the love has never faded.

This April will mark 10 years in business for DFW Reptarium, and they hope to continue expanding their store throughout Texas. This has been a lifelong dream finally come true for David, and it’s an impressive feat. If you’re ever in Plano, it’s plain to see this is an outstanding store that deserves a pitstop!

Lovely testimonial about our Aspen Snake Bedding by .animals:

"I have now tried a lot with the garter snakes in order to be able to offer them the best conditions. The bioactive terrariums were beautiful, but sometimes too humid, so the snakes became sick. If the ground was drier, then unfortunately it was too dusty, which wasn't good either.Since these snakes dig a lot, these problems are much more serious than, for example, with my corn snakes, which are almost never on the ground.

Now I have decided to use aspen snake bedding from as a substrate. And what can I say... the snakes love it. They really dig tunnels that don't collapse again, but remain intact. And it isn't dusty!"

They will add on top to add to the natural look of the tank while still using as the base for burrowing.

Thank you .animals for the unsolicited review!

The two most important considerations for are the distance the UVB penetrates into the habitat and the width the UVB covers. Pets need to be able to expose their whole bodies to UVB while basking, and they need the appropriate strength of UVB.

Our T5 bulbs come in a 5.0 and 10.0 strength and vary in length from 12 inches (30 cm) to 46 inches (116 cm) for pets big and small.

Our website has a Lighting and UVB education guide that can help you find the right UVB bulb for your habitat and species. Visit zoomed.com/lighting-uvb-education/
