Today we’re (temporarily) evicting the Box Turtles from the greenhouse. We’re bringing them inside so we can flush their systems of any lingering food matter before putting them to sleep fully in the cold room. During this time we also like to photograph and weigh the animals for our records.

Last week we found 6 BABY RED-FOOTED TORTOISES in the greenhouse with the adults! Today let’s run through a simple but effective hatchling setup to get these little guys off and running. One note with baby tortoises is that they can take a liking to certain mosses and substrates, so be sure to keep a close eye on what goes in and comes out of them.

It’s time to make our Box Turtles starve! But it’s not as bad as it sounds. In the winter, Box Turtles experience a brumation period where their activity levels and metabolism will drop alongside the temperatures of the region. In order to prevent excess food from sitting in the turtles’ stomachs undigested and rotting, we have to keep food away from them for a few weeks until we bring them indoors to cool fully. Follow to see the next stage of our Box Turtle brumation regiment!

Christmas came (very) early! We found a baby Red-footed Tortoise meandering around the adult pen, and where there’s one there’s more! We found a total of 5 perfect hatchlings under the earth waiting to spring from their nest. Follow to see how we start and establish these baby tortoises indoors!

TROPICAL EXCAVATOR® CLAY enclosure build! You heard that right! Traditionally Excavator® Clay has been used to create elaborate arid enclosures, but today we’re gonna try something new. We’ve used Excavator® Clay to construct enclosures for our Green Keeled-Bellied Lizards and it has held up to consistent misting over time. Should we do more tropical builds with Excavator® Clay?

Red Mangroves! Our Turtle’s favorite plants! In our opinion these are one of the best plants to keep with your turtles. They help with nutrient export, offer obstacles for your turtles to climb around and within, and provide shade from sunlight. Some turtle species even live among mangroves in nature, like our Diamondback Terrapins. They can be fairly simple to start as propagules as well, which can be easily sourced online!

Arid reptile enclosure build!
After finding this awesome piece of Mopani Wood we decided we had to use it for a nice build! To make it all come together we used Excavator Clay® to anchor the piece in place, and our Desert Flora line to bring the scape to life. We simply pressed the root bases into the clay to make sure they stay secure. Desert White Reptisand® went in as the substrate of choice as it contrasts nicely with the orange Excavator Clay® and wood piece. Even tho it’s an arid scape a bit of Leaf Litter can really help finish it off!

Our store of the month is @tailsandscales.ca in Toronto, Ontario! When the store opened in 2009, it was a reptile specialty store that catered to the Greater Toronto Area for all their reptile needs. Growing out of space at the original location, they moved into a much larger retail space in 2014 and ventured into the aquatic world which followed by the addition of rare and unusual live plants from all parts of the globe.
Owner Nelson Cardoso has been keeping and breeding reptiles from a very young age and has always had a passion for all living things. One of his personal favorite reptiles is the Banded Uromastyx (Uromastyx Disparflavifasciata) due to their personality and incredible appearance. One of the main inspirations for Nelson to open his store was his breeding and keeping of many reptile species.
Feeder insects/worms and rodents are a staple at Tails and Scales and available in different sizes. These include feeder crickets, waxworms, mealworms, superworms, silkworms, hornworms, peanut beetles, confused flour beetles, two varieties of fruit flies, and black soldier fly larvae. Feeder mice and rats are available live and frozen. Other feeder items including quail, chicks and rabbits are available to fulfil any feeding requirements. They also carry three types of springtails and over 20 varieties of isopod species. Animal boarding is available to their clients.
From the owner to the staff, the entire team is very knowledgeable and passionate hobbyists that keep and breed reptiles, live plants, and fish at home and, therefore, can offer excellent customer service to their loyal clientele. From beginners to expert hobbyists, one can find everything they need for their pets.
If you are visiting Toronto or a resident, be sure to visit Tails and Scales and check out all their incredible animals, staff members, products, display terrariums and plant room!
4-H offers a Reptile Project for kids??? While we were at the @sloreptileexpo, it was great running into 4-H kids that had been a part of the 4-H Reptile Project. This 4-H Project allows kids to get hands on and learn about a whole host of different reptile species. If you think your child may have an inkling for the odd and scaly, don't hesitate to reach out to your local 4-H club!
