URGENT: Farson needs a miracle. He needs a hero. And he needs it now.

A beautiful hippo, Farson has been through so much in his short life. When he arrived into our care, he was emaciated, had necrotic bite wounds and was covered in dried blood. Our team brought him back to life, and he became the happy, wiggly boy that he is today.

But, he has struggled in the kennel environment. He is so very stressed, to the point that last week he injured himself in his kennel. We suspect that he has injured his cruciate and may have slipped a disc.

For a period of time, he lost the use of his back legs. It was touch and go and we worried about his longterm prognosis. We still worry.

But, with steroids and medication, he has regained the use of his leggies and is back to being his goofy, wiggly self. But, still, the need for him to leave the shelter is URGENT. We fear he may reinjure himself at any moment.

He can't stay here.

Please help us find an adoptive home, a foster family, or a rescue to step up for Farson. Help us find our miracle.

Email [email protected] for more information, or come in to meet Farson today!

Chance, the German Shepherd puppy, is in the very early stages of his long recovery journey from the terrible trauma he endured. We are so grateful to our partners at Mason Dixon Animal Emergency Hospital for their hard work in stabilizing him until he was well enough to be transferred into our care. MDAEH accepts stray and injured animals found after our open hours and cares for them until they are stable enough to be transferred to our care. The York County SPCA accepts full financial responsibility for these pets, like Chance, until they are eventually well enough to be ready for adoption.

Our entire veterinary team is focused on Chance’s recovery. Countless caring individuals have reached out asking to be considered to adopt him. At this time, we cannot place any adoption holds for him. When Chance is well enough to go to his forever home, we will share that information with our community and applications will be considered on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Please consider supporting Chance’s medical recovery by donating to our Second Chance fund. This important fund covers the extraordinary expenses of saving the most vulnerable pets such as the cost of critical emergency veterinary care, transformative surgeries, and essential medicines. www.ycspca.org/secondchance

Chance endured unspeakable cruelty, left beaten and unconscious – a stark reminder of the injustice some animals endure. The Second Chance Fund ensures that his emergency care at Mason Dixon Animal Emergency Hospital is fully covered. This remarkable fund draws strength from our community, from individuals like you who understand the profound impact of compassion in action.

If you are interested in adoption, please consider filling out a general application on our website. https://ycspca.org/adopt/

Meet Hunny, the sweet and friendly 4-year-old Doodle (Poodle/Lab) mix looking for her forever home! Hunny is a calm and laid-back girl who enjoys being near her humans and following them around the yard. She may be a little timid initially, but as soon as she gets to know you, she will shower you with smiles and affection. Hunny's favorite things include lounging inside with her foster family and walking on the trails. She is great with other dogs and loves to play ball. When it comes to housetraining, Hunny is a pro! She has spent her whole life outside in a kennel but has quickly learned to go outside to potty. She also sleeps all night on a dog bed and has not had any accidents. Weighing 61 pounds, Hunny looks like a Lab / Poodle mix. Although she hasn't had much formal training, Hunny does know to come when called and catches treats. She has never been crated, but her calm and laid-back nature suggests she would do well with crate training. Hunny's ideal home would be one where she can be near her human and get lots of affection. She would also love access to a yard to lay in the sun and walk on nearby trails. If you're looking for a sweet, friendly, and medium energy-level companion, Hunny might just be the perfect dog for you!

Update on Small Fry: Our medical team wanted to share with all of Small Fry’s supporters that she is showing some improvement this afternoon. Her bloodwork looks good today and her blood pressure is stable. There are currently no signs of refeeding syndrome which is always the major concern with animals like her with such extreme emaciation. However, she is still on IV fluids and heat support because she is unable to regulate her own body temperature. Small Fry has been trying to get on her feet this morning but she is still too weak for mobility.

Many of you asked to also meet Fish Fry, Small Fry’s brother who barked wildly for help just in time to save her life. He is in better condition than his sister and is staying in one of our more quiet kennel rooms. Fish Fry is shy and unsure of our shelter, which is understandable for everything he has been through. Our training and enrichment team is working with Fish Fry to help him come out of his shell.

We are incredibly thankful to everyone who has been supporting our Medical Care Match over the last 10 days. Small Fry’s case is exactly why we do these donation drives–so that we have the ability to help animals like her the moment they come through our doors. We’d love to say she is the first and last animal we will ever see in such a dire state, but that would simply and sadly not be true. That is why we depend on our community’s support to always be ready for the next one who needs us.

If you would like to make a contribution to BARCS’ Medical Care Fund, Bill Miller and Miller Value Partners’ matching pledge opportunity continues through 11:59 p.m. on July 6. Every donation to our Medical Care Fund up to $25,000 will be doubled to fund this lifesaving program.

Sweet Daisy Mae was spotted by a concerned neighbor, who noted that she had spent four long days and nights outside without food and water. When Baltimore City Animal Control officers arrived on the scene, they saw that Daisy Mae was stuck on a second story balcony by herself. She was emaciated, and her paws were covered in urine. This poor girl was in desperate need of saving.

When she was safely at BARCS, our skilled and caring veterinary team performed a thorough medical examination, which revealed that, in addition to her other ailments, Daisy Mae is blind. We can only imagine how terrified and lonely she must have felt out on that balcony. Though it seems she may have lived life up until this point without the love and affection of humans, she has quickly learned to trust and soak up our attention.

Critical medical care for our animals is the largest part of the BARCS budget, totaling more than $500,000 each year. It’s where funding for our shelter is always greatly needed. As Maryland’s largest animal shelter, we see some of the worst cases of abuse and neglect. Your donations are quickly used for treatment.

Bill Miller and Miller Value Partners wanted to do more to make sure that the animals at BARCS are taken care of. Now through 11:59 p.m. on July 6, every donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $25,000. This means that your $10 gift turns into $20, $50 turns into $100… anything you give helps twice the number of animals.

Your gift provides ongoing medical care ranging from preventatives, vaccinations and antibiotics to diagnostics, intensive treatments and surgery. This fund also provides spaying and neutering to all adopted animals before they leave the shelter.

When you give, please consider making your gift a monthly donation. As an essential service and an open-admission shelter, BARCS continues to take in and care for hurting and helpless animals in our community. We are still welcoming new animals in our shelter each and every day. It is because of our dependable monthly donors, our Constant Companions, that we know each day what funding we will have to get us through.

Donate today to make a difference in the lives of animals in need: https://www.barcs.org/donate/medical/
