Abandoned by the dumpsters at work. As I was leaving work Tuesday morning at 6 am I passed the dumpster and there sat a carrier with two black puppies in it. They were dumped at the hospital... I could say a lot about it. But you don't need me to tell you what I think about our responsibility with dogs and cats, puppies and kittens ....

A new Texas A&M climate report shows a dramatic rise in 100-degree days, while the dangers posed by hurricanes, droughts and other extreme weather conditions are growing.

Water crashes over a road during Hurricane Harvey in Kemah, Texas. Hotter temperatures, higher storm surges and urban flooding are among the extreme weather risks threatening the state.
Weather conditions across the Lone Star State are getting more extreme and more dangerous by the year, according to a new report from Texas A&M University professor and State Climatologist John Nielsen-Gammon.

The newly updated assessment of extreme weather in Texas draws on data from 1900-2023 to predict trends through the year 2036, and shows a significant uptick in extreme temperatures and droughts, wildfire conditions and urban flooding risks, among other changes. The report was authored by Nielsen-Gammon, a Regents Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, in collaboration with the nonprofit public policy organization Texas 2036.
“We have national climate assessments, but they can’t do justice to Texas’ specific climate conditions,” Nielsen-Gammon said. “With this Texas-specific study, we focused on observed trends as much as possible rather than emphasizing climate model projections. The historic climate trends are part of our lived experience in Texas, and our report puts them in long-term context.”
In recent years, Texans have come face-to-face with the realities of a warming climate, sweating through record-breaking heat waves and lengthy droughts that have taken a toll on agricultural and water resources in many parts of the state.
“During the past couple of years, we’ve gone through two of the hottest summers on record,” Nielsen-Gammon said. “That has altered the trend of 100-degree days, making the increase even more dramatic than it had been. We’ve also seen new research that indicates that surface water supplies might be becoming less reliable, with increasing evaporative losses coupled with increasingly erratic rainfall.”

Abstract
*Horses (Equus caballus) have been domesticated for millennia and are regularly utilized for work, sport, and companionship. Enhanced understanding of human–horse interactions can create avenues to optimize their welfare. This review explores the current research surrounding many aspects of human–horse interactions by first highlighting the horse’s sensory capabilities and how they pertain to human interactions. Evidence exists that suggests that horses can read humans in various ways through our body odours, posture, facial expressions, and attentiveness. The literature also suggests that horses are capable of remembering previous experiences when working with humans. The interrelatedness of equine cognition and affective states within the horse’s umwelt is then explored. From there, equine personality and the current literature regarding emotional transfer between humans and horses is examined. Even though horses may be capable of recognizing emotional states in humans, there remains a gap in the literature of whether horses are capable of empathizing with human emotion. The objective of this literature review is to explore aspects of the relationship between humans and horses to better understand the horse’s umwelt and thereby shed new light on potential positive approaches to enhance equine welfare with humans.*

Abstract
*The "isolation syndrome" is a term used to describe the stress responses observed in highly social species when they lack social interactions. This syndrome affects various aspects of an individual's welfare, including hormonal, behavioral, and physiological systems. Dogs, known for their social nature, have been used as a model to study the effects of social buffering provided by conspecifics or humans. This study aims to investigate the social buffering effect of humans on dogs and determine if it is solely associated with bonding or socialization. The study selected Australian Cattle Dogs with limited social interactions with humans, ensuring that no direct bonds or human socialization were involved. The dogs were randomly assigned to either an isolation or social condition, and cortisol levels were measured before and after the tests to evaluate stress responses. The results showed that isolation led to a significant increase in cortisol levels, indicating a stress response. However, in the presence of unfamiliar humans, cortisol levels did not increase significantly, suggesting a lack of stress response. This finding suggests that humans can serve as social buffers for dogs, even without prior bonding or socialization. Therefore, dogs without systematic human socialization still benefited from the presence of unfamiliar humans.*
