Planting our crops into mature green cover crops usually goes really well. We work through any challenges because this practice is so beneficial for the farms we manage. But this spring, "the extra mile" turned into ten miles... We were rained out of the field so long, the cover crop died and laid down, making it *almost* impossible to plant through.

With the help of other innovative farmers, we finally found a solution that did NOT include plows, discs, hay balers, or matches. Thank you to everyone who helped us accomplish what we previously believed was impossible! Good friends help us overcome challenges, and good challenges help us grow. Today we are grateful for both!

Berkshire Pork Reservations Available Now!

Our hogs are raised the old fashioned way, rooting in the dirt, lounging in the shade, and eating a balanced corn ration designed just for them.

They will be finished in late fall with processing dates from November 8 to December 6. If you would like to purchase homegrown pork for your family, please let us know by August 31.

We finished planting corn into our mature cover crop last week, but not before making a few pictures with it!

Allowing our cover crops to mature maximizes their potential to stop erosion, fix nitrogen from the atmosphere, grow deeper roots to break up compaction, and provide food and shelter for all kinds of beneficial biology.

If I could tell the world one thing about our industry, it would be that grazing animals, like cows, play an irreplaceable role in protecting our environment and providing safe and abundant food. Cows aren’t the problem, they are a very important part of the solution. A grazing system that is well managed can dramatically helps us reduce carbon in the atmosphere, improve soil health, and produce nutritious food.

At the same time, each steer we sell supports multiple small family businesses including the cow/calf producer, the feed store, the hay producer, and the local processor, not to mention all the people they employ. Buying locally grown beef is a perfect way to get to know your farmers and support your community at the same time!

Finally, I want to say a huge THANK YOU to the Tennessee Beef Industry Council for giving us a chance to share our stories!

We are still in the early stages of our soil health journey, but embracing the soil health principles has given our work fresh purpose and excitement! We feel blessed to have a front row seat to God’s perfect design and we are thankful for the opportunity to share it with you!

There is a growing movement within our industry that focuses on creating healthier soils by working with nature, rather than trying to control nature. Farmers and ranchers all over the world are improving their soils by embracing soil health principles that mimic nature and promote soil biology.

We are finally home after an incredible trip to Puerto Rico with our Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation family!

We were honored to be chosen as the National Runner Up for the America's Young Farmers & Ranchers Achievement Award, an award that has inspired us for many years!

This competition recognizes young farmers who are building successful businesses and becoming skilled advocates for agriculture. We work hard everyday, but our success is a direct result of the support we’ve received from our community, friends, mentors, and family. To all of you, we say a huge and heartfelt THANK YOU!

Good morning! Due to some last minute cancellations, we have one beef half (or two quarters) available. The meat will be ready to pick up at Palmer Farms Meats around the end of October. It will be first come, first serve so if you are interested, please contact us as soon as possible. Thank you!

**The price is still $2.65/lb but this steer was larger than our average steer. The price for this quarter beef is $626 and the estimated price of the processing is about $215. The total price altogether will be about $840 for one quarter. For a half, you can double those prices.**

Here’s the herd in action! They are experts in turning plants into delicious, nutritious protein!

And if that’s not enough to impress you…

Their hooves trample plants onto the soil surface where the plants can feed earthworms and other beneficial bugs!

Their manure, rich in biology, fertilizes the soil and adds to the biology already living there!

By managing their grazing, we can encourage plant growth to maximize photosynthesis and carbon sequestration!

Remember the pictures of the crazy tall grass in our pastures? It was all a part of a year long experiment to increase diversity and build soil health in our pastures. Here's the full story!

Derek has been growing winter cover crops in the corn and soybeans fields for many years, but this year we decided to use cover crops to increase the diversity and biomass in our pastures!

This weeks Farmer Friday spotlight goes to Giffin Farms! Giffin Farms originated around 1897 right here in Obion County! Giffin Farms is a 5th generation farming operation that consists of corn, soybeans, and wheat. The farming operation started with William Everett Giffin and has since then been passed down to Hoyt Giffin, William’s son. Derek Giffin, Hoyts son, and Conner Arnold, Hoyts nephew, play a huge role in the farms day to day operations whether it be long nights or early mornings. Giffin Farms also has a beef cow/calf operation that is primarily ran by Derek’s wife, Micayla, when she is not at her daily USDA job here in Obion County. Micayla is also in charge of keeping the majority of the farms books/records! When asked how agriculture was important to Derek, his response was, “Outside of feeding and clothing the world, agriculture is important to me because it supports local communities and economies. Conservation of our resources is our main focus and we strive to be the best stewards of the land and livestock that we can be. We have a responsibility to do the right thing and make decisions that take care of our neighbors, the environment, and the long term health of our industry.” We at Obion Farmers Co-op are thankful for local farmers like the Giffin’s in Obion County that share the same appreciation for agriculture that we do.
