Giffin Farms

Giffin Farms We are a family farm dedicated to the production of row crops, hay, and healthy local beef. Our row crop fields grow corn, soybeans, wheat, and cover crops.

Improving the land, growing healthy crops and livestock, strengthening our community, and protecting the environment... Our family works everyday to apply the foundational principles of soil health and animal husbandry on our farms in Obion County, Tennessee. Our cattle graze perennial pasture and cover crops, turning the forages into fertilizer for our crops and food for soil biology. We also fin

ish calves and sell custom and retail beef in our community, which helps us add value to our cattle and strengthen the local food supply chain. We love the end result of this symbiotic system: healthy food for families today and a healthy future for the next generation.

In this video, we share the results of planting corn into mature cereal rye and whether or not our efforts to prevent erosion were successful through the wettest spring we've ever had!

Is planting corn into cereal rye a mistake? In 2024, we completed another experiment on 15 acres of pure cereal rye. Prior to planting, we grazed our cow her...

Planting our crops into mature green cover crops usually goes really well. We work through any challenges because this practice is so beneficial for the farms we manage. But this spring, "the extra mile" turned into ten miles... We were rained out of the field so long, the cover crop died and laid down, making it *almost* impossible to plant through.

With the help of other innovative farmers, we finally found a solution that did NOT include plows, discs, hay balers, or matches. Thank you to everyone who helped us accomplish what we previously believed was impossible! Good friends help us overcome challenges, and good challenges help us grow. Today we are grateful for both!

When it FINALLY stopped raining, we were quick to get back in the field and beginning tackling our monster of a problem… planting corn and soybeans though in...

We finished planting corn into our mature cover crop last week, but not before making a few pictures with it!

Allowing our cover crops to mature maximizes their potential to stop erosion, fix nitrogen from the atmosphere, grow deeper roots to break up compaction, and provide food and shelter for all kinds of beneficial biology.

If I could tell the world one thing about our industry, it would be that grazing animals, like cows, play an irreplaceable role in protecting our environment and providing safe and abundant food. Cows aren’t the problem, they are a very important part of the solution. A grazing system that is well managed can dramatically helps us reduce carbon in the atmosphere, improve soil health, and produce nutritious food.

At the same time, each steer we sell supports multiple small family businesses including the cow/calf producer, the feed store, the hay producer, and the local processor, not to mention all the people they employ. Buying locally grown beef is a perfect way to get to know your farmers and support your community at the same time!

Finally, I want to say a huge THANK YOU to the Tennessee Beef Industry Council for giving us a chance to share our stories!

Welcome to Giffin Farms!

Our farm is like many others in our area. Most of Derek's time and energy is spent on the row crop side of the operation. A lot of our corn, soybeans, and wheat are grown in the same fields that his dad, granddad, and great-grandad farmed, beginning more than a hundred years ago. It is our hope to continue this tradition, and as we go, we'll look for ways to make it our own.

One way we are doing this is by reintroducing cattle to Giffin Farms. The best part is that we are creating a mutually beneficial system between our cows and our crops. Both sides work together to make each other stronger and healthier. We love the end result: higher crop yields and a greater opportunity to provide our community with healthy local beef.
