Today Ricco had a visit from Trixie DeLisle to trim his feet. He was fairly patient. She found he has quite a bit of pain in many areas and needs some body work and adjustment so we hope to get that scheduled soon.

The Bluebonnet Horse Expo & Rescue Horse Training Challenge just about 2 1/2 months away - can you believe it?

For those who don't know about the Expo & Training Challenge, it is a one-day event on October 5th in Taylor, Texas that attracts horse lovers from all over Texas - and from several other states. There are presentations from equine professionals, vendors, tack for sale, a saddle auction, kids' stick horse show, horses for adoption, and the Bluebonnet Rescue Horse Training Challenge.

- We are looking for sponsors. Sponsorships start at just $25 and have varying benefits. You can learn about the sponsorship levels and sign up at http://www.bluebonnethorseexpo.com/blog/sponsors
- If you don't need sponsorship benefits, you could donate. Donations are tax deductible since we're a nonprofit and help put on the event. Donate at https://bluebonnethorseexpo.com/blog/donate/
- Become a vendor. Vendor spaces are just $75 and are located in the climate controlled vendor area right past the entrance - we funnel everyone through the vendor area before they hit the rest of the Expo! We welcome horse/farm/ranch/western-themed art-work, jewelry, home décor as well as tack and equipment. Please no MLM or political booths.
We also take donations of tack, saddles, and horse equipment and would love a horse trailer to auction off again this year! You can contact [email protected] if you have items to donate.

Ricco has shown signs he needs to take a step back and work on some things. We have been working this last week on being touched all over, especially unexpectedly, and standing tied quietly.

Sunday I ponied him at Lacy Point. He was not as scared of the waves as the last time we were near a lake. He did better with the other horse coming up behind and beside him as well. I did a lot of random touching as we rode. He is still shying away and reacting strongly to that.

Today Ricco experienced his first parade. I'm not sure he was a fan. Lol. I didn't feel he was ready to ride in that environment yet, so I ponied him. He crowded Lina to stay as close as he could to her for comfort and needed to keep his feet moving, so we did a lot of circles. We completed the route successfully and then spent some time practicing standing tied quietly. He pawed and moved around a bunch for a while, but then settled nicely.
He didn't mind wearing the decorations at all.

Ricco and I went to the Lometa arena today to have our first real ride with the bit. We worked on responsiveness to cues to turn and stop at the walk and trot. He's still mouthing and chewing on the bit some but overall accepting it well.

Thank Jessi for coming to take pictures and videos for me!

I put a bit in Ricco's mouth for the first time today. I let him wear it for a while loose in the round pen, then ground drove him a little, then rode ba****ck. He accepted it very well.
He still doesn't like the headstall going over his ears. I find putting it on in the trailer works great with horses that don't like their ears touched. They can't throw their heads and are confined. Eventually they learn it's ok and allow it to happen outside the trailer as well.

We had a good time at Garey Park for the 4th of July. Ricco had his first ride in the arena. We tried out some different obstacles. He doesn't hesitate to go up and over things. He didn't hesitate to go into the river, either. I love how he gets his hind end up under him on the hills. He's already shaping up to be a great trail horse!

I rode Ricco Suave for the third time today, and he had his first trail ride under saddle. After the trail we worked on the obstacle course. Our focus today was steering. He did so well! He is a fast and willing learner!

We had our first ride today with a saddle. We ponied first with an empty saddle on the trails at Parrie Haynes Ranch, then I got on and rode around the camp area. Ricco did so well! He didn't even flinch at me pulling up into the saddle from the ground. He impresses me every training session with how quickly he learns and embraces new things.
I had no one to take pictures today☹️

Ricco got his bridle path clipped again today. This is the second time we've done it and he was pretty good about it. We spent a long time working on touching ears today. It's a bit of a struggle to get the bridle on over the ears.

Ricco Suave is a bay quarter horse gelding standing 14.2-14.3 hh. He is about 10-12 years old. He spent his first years unhandled in pasture and is just being started under saddle. He has been very willing to learn and is being exposed to many new places and new things. He is not an “in your pocket” type horse. He is more standoffish, but will let you approach. Once he is haltered, he has good ground manners, leads easily, ties, loads, and behaves well. He is still learning to trust and lacks confidence, so still needs a little warning of what's coming and gentle movement around him. He moves well forward, backward, and laterally as well as turns well on the hindquarters and forequarters.

My goal for Ricco is to give him a solid foundation that can be built upon to further his training in whatever specific discipline his future owner desires.

My name is Wendy Brixius. I work full time as an elementary school teacher.

I currently train horses as time allows. I prefer to start horses and work on specific behavior issues rather than perfect them for competition.

When I found out about the Bluebonnet Horse training challenge I thought it sounded like a fun opportunity to do what I love and help a horse in need.

I have a degree in equine science from Colorado State University and was training horses before I started training children. Lol.

I have trained at Morgan and Quarter Horse breeding and showing facilities in Illinois, Colorado, and North Carolina, working in Western, English, and dressage.

I have trained for independent clients in Texas, primarily starting and retraining horses for trail riding.

I have started horses under saddle from 2-24 years old and worked with horses from auctions, kill pens, and abusive backgrounds.

Ricco had his first ride today! I've laid across his back and put my feet up on his butt, but today was the first time I actually sat on him with one leg on each side and rode. He is a fast learner. He's figuring out going, turning, and stopping already.

22/06/2024

We worked on the trail obstacles at Parrie Haynes as well.

22/06/2024

We rode today at Parrie Haynes Ranch. Ricco is learning that other horses coming up behind him are not coming to get him! Lol. He is so much more laid back than he was just a few weeks ago.

I have ponied at home along the country road and taken Ricco Suave out to Parrie Haynes, Dana Peak Park, and Lake Waco. My patient mare, Lina, is teaching him how to be a trail horse. He's getting exposed to traffic, dogs, hikers and bikers, crossing water, boggy ground, hilly and rocky terrain and other horses moving around him.

I have done a lot of ground work with Ricco Suave. He started out nervous and distrustful, jumpy and thin skinned, reactive and defensive.

After a lot of repetition and reassurance he is finally starting to trust me. He leads forward, turns on forequarters and hindquarters, moves laterally, and backs beautifully. He stands calmly to be groomed, saddled, and bathed. He loads by pointing him in the trailer and backs out. He ties without pulling back (although he does sometimes still paw). He picks up his front feet easily. We're still getting there with the back feet.

I am proud of the progress he has made. He had so much fear when we started and I am seeing his confidence grow daily.
