WHAT IS AN F1 AND AN F1B GOLDEN DOODLE?

The “F” stands for “filial” and is simply a way to denote generation. So an F1 Goldendoodle means “First Generation Goldendoodle.” This is the initial cross, so one parent would be a purebred Golden Retriever and the other a purebred Poodle.
These dogs typically have loose, wavy coats. The downside of the F1 generation is they may still shed some—less than a purebred Golden Retriever but more than a mix with more poodle.

The “B” in this description stands for “back cross.” In other words, the original hybrid cross has been bred back to a purebred parent (typically the poodle). The result is a puppy that is 75% poodle and 25% Golden Retriever. Golden Doodles of Hawaii breeds mostly F1B doodles. These puppies typically have wavy to curly coats and little or no shedding. The F1B generation is a good choice for allergy sufferers or those who simply want less fur to clean up around the house.

WHY DO SO MANY PEOPLE LOVE GOLDEN DOODLES?

Doodles have a great reputation for being a family-friendly breed and rightly so. The Standard Poodle was originally bred as a retrieving dog (specifically for the water). So Standard Poodles are quite athletic, moderately active and extremely intelligent. Retrieving is a skill that requires dutiful obedience on the part of the dog, and the standard poodle is no exception.

The poodle makes a smart, sensitive but very patient companion. The most common breeds of doodles are Standard Poodles bred with other well-known family-friendly breeds such as the Labrador or Golden Retriever. So doodles are typically a combination of two smart and friendly breeds and as a result, doodles are typically tolerant, gentle and do well with kids. They are energetic enough to keep up with family activities but also highly trainable and easy to keep in the house.

Doodles also just have a certain wit and charm about them. You can tell a doodle's temperament early on. Owners have reported countless examples of the doodle’s cleverness and wit from learning to organize and clean up their own toys, to operating a light switch.

Doodles tend to be remarkably intelligent, easy to train and extremely loyal and devoted to their people. They are frequently used as therapy dogs, emotional support dogs and are easily trained for technical jobs like finding drugs and bombs. It is almost impossible not to love a doodle!

We generally only work with Golden Doodles, but one of my favorite expert fellow ethical breeders has a litter of AussieDoodles - three girls and two boys - that will be available to take home in a couple of weeks. Aussie Doodles are a combination of purebred Australian Shephards (widely considered the most intelligent breed of dogs on the planet), and a purebred show champion miniature poodle. These are first generation (no other breeds in the mix), and they have pristine genetics. They will be smaller dogs (18-25 pounds), but are active, great with children, and very easy to train. We are officially expecting not one, but two litters of Golden Doodle Puppies in early June. One litter will be mid-sized (about 40 pounds, full grown), and one will be miniatures, sired by a gorgeous miniature poodle who is an award-winning show champion here in Hawaii! The combination of these two dogs will be gorgeous!
