A lot of my clients seem to be very uncomfortable with the idea of separating their dog and child for safety reasons. But I recently had an epiphany - they all assumed that separation was the same as isolation. And it's not.
Using management strategies, such as using a a baby gate between living spaces in the home, provide separation between the dog and child. But neither the dog or child is isolated. Everyone can still see each other. The parent can still interact with everyone. And with time and patience, everyone can be very comfortable and safe with such an arrangement.
So now, I am always reminding clients that "Separation is not the same as isolation." It's simply a way for parents to function and do the impossibly difficult job of raising kids and dogs together.

The Brookings Regional Humane Society has urgently taken in over 55 cats/kittens and 4 dogs from a single household after the owner's death. Coordinated with the Brookings Community Service Officers, this operation aims to ensure the animals' welfare and future adoption.
Due to the large intake, BRHS has temporarily closed its animal intake services to focus on these rescues.
BRHS is appealing for community support in the form of monetary donations for medical expenses, supplies such as cat litter and wet ALL STAGES cat food, and foster homes for nursing mama cats and kittens.
The community is encouraged to contact BRHS for donations, supplies, or fostering opportunities. Donations can be dropped off at the shelter during open lobby hours.

It’s and this week we’re raising money for a new grooming sink faucet since our current faucet has seen its full lifespan of repairs and part replacements. Can you spare $5 today to help us raise approximately $300 to get all the new gaskets, fixtures, and parts we need? It’s that time of year again - the early summer when we start getting calls and emails about mysterious red rings on the underside of our dogs. Fear not - these angry looking sores are NOT Lyme disease or ringworm. They’re just old fashioned bug bites. Good news - you can completely ignore them and they’ll go away on their own. As my mentor and friend the iconic Bob Bailey says “The main reason for failure in dog training is people expect too much of the dog and not enough of them selves.” Maybe the training you’ve put into your dog up to this point hasn’t worked, maybe the input you’ve received from experts so far hasn’t worked, that doesn’t mean there is no solution...it could mean you’ve been looking in the wrong places or trying the wrong approaches. To make it a perfect trifecta, three amazing quotes in one post, I’ll add one more from the late great Wayne Dyer “Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change.“ Dogs really are amazing when we give them the chance to be!

When you get it right, your dog will never want to take his eyes off of you, and you will have to create a new response: inspired focus forward towards something else!
