Bigger Braver World - Sierra Edition
Sierra has always wanted to make sure she knows where I am 👀, but having the cone on has increased that need. In fact, we have inadvertently developed a new cue...waving good-bye to her now gets translated as "Come!" 🤣 We will begin concentrating efforts on making my presence more of a non-event once we get through this ear thing!

Remember, when your dog doesn't do what you "command" them to do it is not because they are being stubborn or spiteful. Dogs are good hearted, genuine beings. Most likely, they are distracted, not properly motivated, or just don't understand what you are asking. Even though they don't come to us having mastered our language, how many words has your dog learned? How many barks have you learned? Who is in the lead? Maybe they are the smarter species! 😂 🤓 🤪

Hide and seek! Can you find Sierra? 🤣🤣♥️🐾
Sierra is a trooper. She has the cone to keep her from scratching her ears and give the salve a chance to work without more irritation to the ears. Although she doesn't like it, for the most part, she is adjusting. She does look at me with those big brown eyes, asking me to remove the stupid thing! 😕 I have noticed that she has a fuller bucket...she is more fearful and bothered by noises, bugs, etc. We have been keeping her days low key, as much as possible... giving her plenty of naps and lots of love.

Well....Sierra isn't too pleased with me. The vet tech inserted the prescription salve into her ears and suggested the Cone of Shame so that she can't scratch her ears and irritate them more. Fingers crossed that the salve does the trick. 🤞This is definitely a relationship bank withdrawal, but sometimes you have to make unpopular decisions! 🥴 She won't have to wear her new accessory long, but I'm sure it already feels too long to her!

Donut do anything I wouldn't do! 🤣🤣🤣
Bigger Braver World - Sierra Edition
Sierra has had ear issues most of her life and hates any all attempts to make them feel better. When the ear wipe container or ear wash bottle came out of the cupboard, she would run away. Some people suggested pinning her down and sticking the stuff in her ear...that made me cringe. 🥴 The relationship she and I have built is too important to be poisoned by forceful treatment. I have worked with her on something called Cooperative Care where she has the right to say no and tell me when enough is enough. This has worked with nail trims and grooming; however, we were struggling in the ear department. This past week, we turned a corner! She consented to having her ears wiped clean and even leaned into my hand as I gently cleaned her ear! We still have a ways to go, but am pleased with this development!😍
We are working with a vet and her food intolerances to hopefully take care of this once and for all. With her consent, we will be able to keep her ears in good shape and she can be her happy, healthy self!
If you are struggling with something similar, don't give up. It will be frustrating at times, but keep adding to that relationship bank...build the trust and amazing things can happen!

ESSENTIAL ENRICHMENT
Imagine being kept in the same space each and every day. You know every blade of grass, every scent, every brick, every piece of fence. You have no books to read, no TV to watch, no one to talk to, no interaction with the outside world and absolutely nothing to do.
Would this situation begin to affect your behaviour and influence your emotional, mental or physical state? What about our dogs?
Many dogs live in this type of environment and yet we wonder why they develop behaviour problems, bark excessively, destroy the garden, become over excited, over aroused or maybe just shut down or sleep all day having completely lost interest in the world.
Many behaviour problems are caused by boredom, a lack of mental and physical stimulation or being confined to the same space every day.
Providing enrichment for dogs is so important for their wellbeing and really doesn’t require that much effort from us.
There are so many simple ways to provide enrichment. An online search for DIY enrichment ideas will provide lots of ideas.
Older dogs may enjoy a ride in the car, sitting at a window watching the world go by, bringing the outside in – sticks, cones, grass etc. from different areas placed in a box for them to rummage through and smell, dinner in the park, or even just playing some doggie music will make a difference.

My work out partner the other day could have chosen anywhere to relax as I did all of the work. 🏋️♀️ She chose to nap in her crate!😴 Some people think using crates is cruel; however, used properly, crates can be a safe haven and a preferred place to chill out.

Who Knew???😮
Just maybe I needed to see this today! 😛
Now that summer is unofficially here the beach at the State Park has A LOT more people! 🏖️ The goal of this training session was for Sierra to see and smell things going on outside of the car but to realize it was none of her business. We parked where she could see but still a good distance away from the "action". It took her a little while to settle down, but she was able to in two different locations!

You will never get there if you don't take that first step! Go ahead....I know you can!
Some days you won't even know you are making progress until something happens to let you know. For example, the other night a family of deer passed behind our house. Sierra was inside and noticed them. She barked once or twice to alert us and then stopped. They weren't her business!

How did your pup steal your heart?
You never really know when opportunities for training will pop up! The other day, Sierra and I were out and about...it seemed like National Roadwork Day. Everywhere we went we were stuck in traffic with noisy machinery, lots of cars, and road workers. I had Sierra's squeezy tube with me and she was perfectly happy lapping out part of her daily food allowance and not letting the outside distractions worry her. She was definitely aware of them, but she decided they weren't important! Well done, Sierra!

So much we can learn from our dogs! Like the saying goes, "Wag More and Bark Less!" [email protected] wagsnxx.com
Late last week, we took advantage of an overcast, intermittent showers type of morning and explored the shoreline of Lake Anna. Sierra was relaxed and enjoyed the smells...she even got her feet wet! Quite often when we are out for a walk I let her choose which way to go. I think it's important to give your dog the opportunity to make choices. I asked her which way she wanted to go, thinking she would choose going to the left or the right on the path...nope! She had other ideas and headed for the shore...it was her choice, after all! 😁

Sunday Funday! Just a little backyard tennis ball fun! Sierra isn't a fan of chasing a tennis ball, but she loves infield practice! She's pretty good with ground balls! #biggerbraverworld #doglife #puppy #puppylove #doglove #puppylife #zengamesdogtraining #cooldogcrew [email protected] wagsnxx.com
What are your pup's favorite words or phrases? Sierra always gives me the head tilt and "attention" ears whenever I ask her if she wants to go for a ride, a walk, or if she's hungry...to name a few! 🚗🚶♀️🥩💖 #doglife #puppy #lovesdogs #puppylove #doglove #puppylife wagsnxx.com [email protected]
The many faces of treat making! The first batch was tuna and the second was liver. Sierra certainly enjoyed the aromas and loved the taste even more! She just isn't a big fan of the waiting! #biggerbraverworld #zengamesdogtraining #cooldogcrew

Bigger Braver World - Sierra Edition We all have those days...you know...the days when you just feel like knocking stuff over! 😜 Sierra and I had been doing a little training; we were working on something new. She was getting a little flustered, so I switched directions. Knock 'Em Over is one of her power poses...she is energized by it...it makes her feel confident. It is so much fun watching her confidently dismantle the towers... just had to share! What is your dog's power pose? #Optimism #confidence #dogstruggles #biggerbraverworld #zengamesdogtraining #cooldogcrew wagsnxx.com [email protected]
The ears are for more than just hearing! Not all dogs can move their ears in the same way; however, for most dogs, the ears play a role in communication. Dogs may flatten their ears if they are anticipating conflict; they want to keep their ears safe from being bitten! Ears perked up, like in this video, shows that this dog is alert...almost like she is figuring something out. A dog who is afraid may have their ears stiffly pulled back. People may associate this with a sign of an aggressive dog too, but in my opinion, most aggression is out of fear. Some dogs will bring their ears down in an attempt to calm themselves when maybe they feel a bit uneasy. #doglife #puppy #lovesdogs #puppylove #doglove #puppylife wagsnxx.com [email protected]
A Tail's Tell Many of us grew up thinking that a wagging tail meant a dog was happy. Unfortunately, this isn't always true. Dogs communicate through their tails. A loose wagging tail is a happy tail. A stiff tail typically signals aggression or discomfort. A tail held straight out often signifies aggression, while a tail tucked tightly between the legs may indicate fear. In some cases, dogs might wag their tails when feeling unsure or insecure in a situation. The pup in this video is happily strutting down the path with a prized possession; notice the loose, back-and-forth sway of his tail. #puppyplay #Optimism #dogstruggles #doglife #puppy #lovesdogs #puppylove #doglove #puppylife wagsnxx.com [email protected]
Did you know that dogs sneeze during play to communicate? Sneezing is a way for a pup to say, “Hey! This is fun!” Some dogs will sneeze when they are excited, and when play gets rough and tumble a sneeze will mean, “No offense...I’m just playing!” Stay tuned over the next couple of days we will explore other ways in which pups communicate! #doglife #puppy #lovesdogs #puppylove #doglove #puppylife #puppyplay wagsnxx.com [email protected]
