Bigger Braver World - Sierra Edition
It was a rainy Sunday afternoon...a perfect opportunity to take Sierra to the Vet! Since on Sundays the practice is closed, I wanted her to have another non-negative (maybe even a bit positive 😉) experience in this currently stressful for her environment. We pulled in and parked right in front of the door. Sierra was like, "Ummm...are you sure this is where we are supposed to be....I don't like this place!" She was certain danger was lurking outside of the car! ☠️ After a few minutes, I got out of the car and hid some food behind the rear tire. I then clip the leash on Sierra, got her out of the car and told her to "Find It!" She, without hesitation, started sniffing and gladly ate the treasures she found! We then went on a little walk so she could take care of business. Once we got back in the car, I gave her a Water Buffalo Cheek Roll (never knew they were a thing until a month ago 😜) and she was very content to relax and chew...even though we were still in the parking lot! Chalk this one up to a happy outcome in a not so happy place! We will continue to build up the positives to help neutralize those not-so-nice associations she has from visiting the office. Eventually, we will have a non-event indoor visit during their surgical hours when no one else is in the waiting room.
My goal is Fear-Free Vet visits and with all of the trips to the vet she has had over the last 6 months, we definitely need to top up the tank. We are not there yet, but are definitely working in the right direction!

Training Tip Tuesday!
Never give up on your pup! The gains you make while training grow over time; there is no pixie dust! A behavior will not change after one training session, and just because they do something once, doesn't make it the new normal. Keep your training sessions short and fun and don't give up!

Sierra has learned that good stuff happens when she responds to her attention noise! I made the noise and she came running! You can train whatever noise you want! Having options in your Recall Toolbox helps to make your pup's recall more reliable.

Another alternative to "Come"!
Sierra has learned it's a good deal for her and comes running when she hears me say "Here!" Sometimes the word "Come" gets poisoned... your pup realizes that it doesn't mean anything or it just isn't a good deal for them to respond. Playing your recall games in an easy environment before leveling up to a medium distraction level environment helps your dog learn the rules of the game and realize that the best things happen when they respond by coming to you.

Back to the Vet's parking lot! This time I put a lick mat beside the passenger side front tire before bringing Sierra out of the car. Could she focus on finding the good stuff and not be so worried about her surroundings? Well, she found the good stuff but was still worried. I let her check out the area and jump back in the car when it became overwhelming. We are taking this step by step and not rushing her. She happily finished the lick mat in the comfort of the back seat!

Our last trip to the vet was not a pretty sight. Sierra didn't even want to go inside and once inside, she was shaking in her boots. I do not want her anxious every time we go there, so we have started associating the Vet's office with good things. For the first step, we drove into the busy parking lot, turned off the car, and I gave her a chew. I was not sure if she would be able to disengage from the surroundings and enjoy her chew, but she did! We have several steps to go before attempting to walk into the office, but we are on our way!

Sierra will come from anywhere when she hears the "Touch" cue! "Touch" is a handy cue to have in your recall arsenal. Having more than one way to get your dog to come when you need them is always a good idea. What do you use to get your dog to come when you need them?

Sierra is super cool with taking herself to another room when she knows where I am and what I'm doing...unless of course she has to guard the door while I'm in the bathroom! 🤪 She isn't 100% Velcro dog; however, when she is asked to stay in a room by herself and there is a barrier between us, she is not happy. In this video, you see her learning there is value in being by herself behind the baby gate. She is chewing on her favorite Beef Hide Roll from Farm Hounds Treats. When I left the room and put up the gate, she pressed pause on her chewing to analyze the situation 🤓 and decided all was good. There was value behind the gate, without a sight line to me, and she was okay. I didn't leave the gate up too long. We are working on her FOMO and being content when asked to spend time by herself.
