Dogs, Cats, Other Animal Friends and Me: a Love Story.

Ever since I was a little girl, dogs and cats have been an integral part of my life. when I was just 8 or 9 weeks old, my parents adopted, Dodi, a female beagle who was born just 4 days after me. We were best friends until she left our family. I learned so much from her, mostly what not to do with a dog! I used to leave my house when the sun came up to go across the street to visit “Uncle Charlie”, his chained dogs, loose cats, chickens, rooster and a donkey named Billy. While other people would be growled and lunged at by the “vicious” dogs or hissed at and scratched by the feral cats, I would sit with all, petting, feeding, laughing and playing.

Any stray cats and dogs in the neighborhood would routinely run away from everyone, except me. They’d either just come right up or with a little coaxing come over and be submissive to me. There was only one exception when I was a young child, a dog around the block was so unhappy he was even vicious to me. It made me cry that he was treated so poorly, and there was nothing I could do to help him.

I have been basically the mom of 3, sister of 6, the aunt of 10 + and rescuer of countless dogs. I’ve rescued and befriended countless cats as well. To this day, lost or stray dogs and cats will still come up to me. When I meet shy, nervous or fear aggressive dogs, within a short time, they become my best friends. Same for cats, unless they are so nervous that they normally stay hidden anyway. With them, it could take many visits, but they all end up coming out and letting me pet them to the amazement of my friends. I’ve taken care of my family’s dogs, took my friend’s dogs for walks and pet sit for dogs, cats, rabbits, frogs, fish, a turtle, and some lizards.

When I finally was able to have my own dog as an adult, Tallulah entered my life as a puppy I was to raise as a service dog for Canine Companions for Independence. All my years of loving and relating to dogs came into play. With the help of CCI's amazing trainers, I learned the skills to teach Tallulah 30 commands, yes 30, by the time she was 6 months old. She was a serious alpha dog who fought being submissive and being good at her “job”. With extension and loving training, she got over that and was the best dog ever. I still miss her, 14 years later.
