What the heck is proprioception anyway?

Using nature's built-in "body-GPS" living beings gain information about their surroundings, what their body parts are both touching & are affected by.

So, by learning from these body-awareness sensors, we navigate our world more safely & as needed with speed.

Here, Lady, the 14 week old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy, negotiates an obstacle course in the form of a garden hose, finding treats as she goes. Always learning!

This is Ellie, a 1-year-old Golden Doodle. She missed out on early experiences of life in general, so now, add adolescence & everyday things are a lot for her.

Today, our second session using ACE Free Work we lowered her arousal level through several enrichment stations, her recovery from seeing me was so much quicker.

Ellie even got to the point where she offered a"sit" for reinforcement (homemade treats) from me (the scary thing). Making progress.

As a professional dog trainer, you'll hear me say, "I'm on the dogs' side." What does this mean? Why is this important to training?
* The dog's emotional health matters
* When a dog doesn't feel safe, training can not happen.
* The dog is doing the best they can with the information we share with them, in the setting WE put them in.
* Trust is more precious than it all!
Sometimes, we leap ahead into training when we need to pause, let the dog get to a safe, trusting place, and then we ask if they're ready?
If you'd like some help getting to the starting point? Contact me through my bio.

Rooster, or Roo as he is known, is settling well. Today, his recovery rate after my arrival at the house was much shorter.

He has a very communicative body. Tail, ears & orientation allow his owner to be in focus when they're out walking. I recommend a 10' or 15' leash to walk so your dog can have plenty of exploring room, while the handler has the option of giving exploring/sniffing space, they can simply walk their hands up the leash as they shorten this exploring distance as needed. It's a lovely technique, and did I mention Joy Factor?

Lady, the Cavalier King Charles puppy, is really growing up quickly.

She is clear about what she's ready for and shows what she is comfortable with by making choices.

For her owners, the training shows up as they recognize & sometimes compromise on what they really "need." Think big picture. For example: If Lady enjoys her day pen, goes in there freely, do you bring that along to an event away from home? You bet! Is it more to pack & a bit combursome? Yes, but, think joy & comfort for Lady as she experiences the familiar in the unfamiliar. Think also the kind management of her world as one so young to keep her both safe, & not practicing undesirable behaviors. Quietly organic, really.

I was thinking about the "joy factor" for dogs. Do they experience this every day, or are we kind of a stressful bunch to live with?

One way to introduce or increase the joy factor is to offer enrichment activities to your dog every day.

Here's an example where I introduced a Lickimat smeared with, in this case, peanut butter (but you can use cream cheese, mashed banana, soft dog food, cat food) keeping Noni's attention on this dopamine-rich activity, using her natural tendancy to lick & taste. Noni will gain confidence & deliciousness too. This improves her joy factor.

* If you have multiple dogs, one at a time, please *

If you'd like to learn more about regulating your dogs' emotions with the help of enrichment stations, reach out thru my bio.

If you've ever had roommates, you know there's a period of time it takes to get your rhythm going.

The same is true when our dogs "welcome" a new 4-legged to the home. Some, like Dango (left), respond kindly, patiently & like an older brother, with boundaries, but more as a teacher. Kimiko is now almost 6 months old, and together, they provide companionship, joy, & questions, which means calling in the help of this trainer.

This beauty is Jazz, an 18 month old, adolescent Lurcher. Her breed mix is Greyhound x Airdale terrier. She is swift in both speed & catching on!

She loves people & now is learning a new pattern of behavior when visitors come to her home. Out 'n about will take a little more learning, but giving her more agency on their walks will leave her more satisfied & less frustrated. Part of the joy of my work is to see changes before your very eyes, which validates the faith in the process. One dog at a time!

Being present in my community is a way to show my commitment to my work & bring kindness to training.

I offer free dog training tips & tricks at The Feed Store in Sebastopol on Petaluma Ave. every 2 weeks on a Sunday.

Today, I showed an ACE Free Work sample set-up, showing station placement, including a water supply & then answered questions as to "why" & "how". This modality uses a dog's 7 senses to help build confidence in shy & fearful dogs, as well as using the free movement between intentionally placed "stations" to detect mobility insecurity & pain points.

I'm excited to add this to my practice, offering both structured enrichment & observation opportunities to help spot difficulties in a dog's movement.

It is so exciting to share the fruits of practicing a relaxation protocol.

Rooster & his owner found a real-life opportunity to put their learning to the test.

Presenting Rooster with a new & different context, he must puzzle out which of his possible body positions will pay him the best? Hey, let's push it some more. He was able to lie down next to a friend, too. Awesome!

This is a perfect example of learning initially in "the shallow end" (at home, surrounded by what & who you know), and taking it to the next level, "the deep end!" Way to go, Rooster, you've got this!

These 2 dogs have a serious job to do. Protecting a flock of 50+ sheep & goats from would be predators. Frosty, almost a year old Great Pyrenees & Timber, the year old Anatolian Shepherd.

Building a close connection with the dogs is a priority for the team who will care for them. One important thing we must remember is the dogs' first order of business is the care of their flock, to the possible point of ignoring the human handlers. Another point to consider is that dogs are on duty at night, so they must sleep & rest during the day. Training sessions are short, very rewarding & then done. #

May I introduce you to Koa, a 14 week old Golden Retriever puppy. He is growing up quickly, learning the ways of his household & developing patterns of behavior that thrill sometimes, and "not so much" at other times.
Take a moment; how much must a puppy learn in a very short time? We expect a lot, yet just 11 weeks ago, his eyes & ears were not open yet!

This is the imprinting or sensitive time, which lasts for only a few more weeks. Experiences during this time, both good & bad, can last a lifetime. Guide them with care & seek the help of a qualified & kind trainer who employs positive training methods. Puppy's buy-in needed!

One of the beautiful things about having a multi-dog household is its mix of personalities with varying back stories. It's a little like I imagine a blended human family would be. At times, things get emotional & disregulated.

May I present Farah, Noni & Ziggy. Farah (L) is around 3, Noni (U.R) is 16! Ziggy (LR) is a lively 2-year-old. My job is to help bring harmony & quiet to this neighborhood.

We must identify the dogs' triggers, of which there may be many, so we can create new patterns and incompatible behaviors, which the dogs will benefit from employing. Let's do this!

My focus here is to share my work through images & reels. Then sometimes I photobomb the picture & you get one of me with a dog! Here's just such a moment with puppy Whimsy. Sweet & mischief rolled into one. I love my what I do, & my goal is to make a difference for the dog & their people too.

What are your dog's favorite things? Might these be a "currency" to reward good choices made by your dog?

While food rewards are easy, though sometimes a bit slimy, the only thing that matters is what is meaningful to your dog, no matter how odd it may seem. Here are some unique preferences:
Lemons
Super-sized carrots
A large rock
A game of tug
Front passenger seat
Do you have an unusual reinforcer you'd share here? Someone else's dog might benefit. TIA!

On the job training! MaiTy, the 9 month old Great Pyrenees dog lives amongst the sheep & goats. She's a faithful protector, and along with her partners on the job, who care for a different flock, she's on duty every day. It's important that the relationship she has with her human carers is one of trust. When they call her, they want her to come. Part of the training is for the humans in this formula to recognize when MaiTy cannot come when called, not that she doesn't want to, but, she has something more pressing to do, care for her flock. So, the timing of the request is important. She will come if there's no pressure or suspicious smells or sounds, and for this, she will be generously rewarded using both praise & and petting, which she loves & treats too. Integrity on the job? Yeh, of the highest degree.

When puppies are young, it's important they do not remain in isolation of other dogs. We must be sure the dogs they do spend time with are kind, gentle, and can tolerate if not lean into that which is puppy joie de vivre. Whimsy is a 12 week old mini Bernedoodle puppy. She will be coming to stay with us for a few training days, so to be sure our environment was not new & different, she came to hang out. Hope, my almost 3-year-old Labrador hasn't seen a puppy quite so small, but I can see they'll get along just fine. Whimsy, meanwhile, is taking it all into her reference library for later use. With care, these early social-skills-learning-labs (pun intented) set our puppies up for success as they take on the world, in about a months time.

Nate in the foreground, with his sister Gracie, are now approaching 6 months of age. Their imprinting time, only offered once in a lifetime, as a way to make life-experience-entries into their reference library, is now over. Things now previously unseen are novel & potentially scary. It's so important to be supportive to our pups as they hear a noise for the first time or see something unfamiliar. A gentle touch of the collar or on their back can let them know we are there for them, especially before they burst into a chorus. Watching our dog's body language change so we can interrupt the sequence of events from emotions to eruption. We are there as translators, let's step up & do the job.

Dogs are constantly communicating with us. We are the students here, but we are not always paying attention. If we're watching & open to a deeper, more profound connection and understanding of our dogs, it is there for the having. While here in the UK, I'm learning from Sarah Fisher, Animal Centered Education, and the dogs attending a workshop here, how to observe dogs in a non-confrontational, pressure-free environment, so we can learn about their mental & physical state. I can't wait to integrate this into my work with you & your dogs to bring a happier, healthier canine companionship for life.

When you're a young, adolescent dog, it must feel good!

You start to have more control of your body. You figure out how far you can jump, by trying. You decide you like this and not that; then change your mind. You learn more about communicating with at least one other species who pretty much lives with you day & night.

All this learning can be exhausting for us. It's happening every day! So, I want to remind you that it's important to keep up a balance of good nutrition, plenty of exercise appropriate for your dog, and naps! Try aiming for 14-16 hours a day. Adolescent dogs can get frustrated easily, too. When asking them to do something, keep it easy. Get your repetitions in, and don't risk losing their interest because you made the ask too difficult. Consider your environment when you ask! Sometimes, you need to go for a walk without our dog. Take a breather, smell the rose. Return refreshed & calm. It's a process, a glorious & sometimes infuriating journey.

This is Ash. He's a young dog part ShihTzu, part terrier, who has found a new home after not being a good match for his previous family. He lucked out! His new owners were just looking for another dog to love, and Ash came on the scene.

Learning what he will work for, what he values (his currencies) & sharing new house rules will help him to settle & teach him that he is home now, forever.

This is Jack, one of my Day Training clients. I borrow him for our life-experience sessions. We walk together nicely, and he sniffs. He practices jumping in & out of the car along with riding to places quietly. We also find places where I can expose him gently to viewing dogs, counter conditioning with him as he looks at a passing dog, keeps his composure. He is handsomely rewarded. Way to go Jacko!

Meet Molly, an 8 month old Irish Setter. When I was growing up in the UK, we called them Red Setters.

Bred to flush & retrieve, Molly already has a propensity to playing ball, repeatedly. She is super friendly & is gentle with the children she encounters. As a high octane adolescent dog, my job is to coach her owners on how to help Molly focus her energy productively to fit into everyday work-life balance.

There is no magic formula, but we must take care of needs and provide ample opportunities for restorative sleep as well as games that engage her thinking brain, not just her superior physical capabilities. Buckle in for the ride!

Day Training with Jack, a 3-year-old Golden Retriever today. A visit to the veterinarian, to keep the association positive outside of 'needing' to go. Then, downtown to take in the people & dogs doing what they do. Well done, Jack!

Have you thought of using Day Training to hone your dog's skills & provide 1-2-1 trainer time. Check it out via my bio.

When presented with a short ACE Free Work circuit of 3 stations, 9 month old Rooster, visibly changed from slightly stiff to having a softer body & displaying more confidence. Such a simple concept, self-directed, loaded with autonomy & using skills plugged into most dogs, those of sniffing & exploring or foraging. These exercises help a dog to build self-confidence and receive positive reinforcement along the way.

Providing an environment where puppies can use their back legs to develop through proprioception is a part of the joys of "teaching & nuturing a dog."

The pups explore, fail, try again, and again. These Borzoi pups will soon be making their way to their new homes, ready to explore with confidence. Thank you, Blue-9 Pet products, for their Klimb platform.

Puppies are unaware that there comes a day when they will leave everything they have known and join their forever families. The closeness, built-in playmates, comfort & warmth of a dog family will now be provided by humans, possibly new dog friends & new surroundings. Give your puppy a chance to figure out their new turf & new house rules as they settle in. If you'd like some help supporting this transition, contact me thru my bio.

My Story

Having begun my consultation business in California in 2002, I have grown that work to now offer consultations to people all over the world through Messenger and Whatsapp, by voice or video call. I’m able to guide people who will bring a new puppy home, to training their puppy and dog using positive, easy to implement protocols and an approach that respects the dog, works with its nature, and causes behavior to improve quickly. As owners, we affect our dog’s behavior, so I’m just excited to share my knowledge and expertise with everyone who wants a well behaved dog.
