“Cool” hot weather tips! ☀️

The notion that a hot, recently exercised horse needs to walk until they are completely cooled off is a myth. A 2020 study found that out of the five methods tested, the quickest way to return to normal body temperature was stationary with continuous tap water application. This doesn’t mean that you should abruptly stop exercise—finish your ride or training session with a slow walk to allow your horse’s heart rate and breathing to gradually return to normal, but after that your sweaty, hardworking horse should be offered a cool shower and drinking water (small but frequent amounts) without delay.

Overall, enjoy your summer rides but be aware of signs of heat stress in your horse. When heat and humidity soar, even moderate exercise can push your equine friend’s body temperature beyond safe limits! Be sure to contact your veterinarian for more information about heat stroke and for recommendations tailored to your horse’s individual situation.

Things my young horse has taught me about sport psychology

Success is not linear. Highs, lows, forwards, backwards. Buckle up.

Keep your head down but chin up by setting small goals. One foot in front of the other and you’ll be amazed to see just how far you’ve come without realizing it. You’re getting where you’re going, you’re just not there yet.

Progress is a reasonable expectation, perfection is not. Perfect often gets in the way of good enough.

The outcome is never within your control. Your effort and attitude are.

Mistakes are a good thing. It means you’re learning. Put your ego aside and and be coachable.

Appreciate the process. You get to do this, you want to do this, you don’t have to. Riding, especially competing, is a privilege not a right.

Emotional control is mandatory. Lose it on your own time, not on your horse’s time.

Ask for help. Learn something new. Try something different. It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts.

Resilience and confidence are flip sides of a coin. Exhibit resilience to grow your confidence, establish resilience by leaning into your confidence.

Earnest Intent aka Ernie competed at the Meadowlake mini trial in BN this weekend scoring a solid 32.8 in dressage, adding one rail due to still working on his lead change promptness, and double clear XC! So much to work on but his bravery and trainability as a 4 year old is second to none, especially with quite a few refusals in both SJ and XC in his division. He finished 3rd and won TIP! 🏆

Ok friends, let’s be real… We’ve all seen some ISO ads lately that would make any true horseman stop in their tracks…

Thank goodness they are shopping for unicorns and not horses, because a good horseman knows that is absolutely impossible from a horse.

Personally I spooked at a squirrel yesterday, and I have better vision than a horse and am not a prey animal.

No one can guarantee any activity in your life is safe—-not soccer, not baseball, not tennis, nothing. Those are the choices you make and the risks you voluntarily take on to participate in the activity you’ve chosen and to live your life. We all try to make the best choices we can of course, but any seller that promises any facet of your life is guaranteed safe is selling snake oil.

As for the horse’s quirks and special needs? I’ve owned hundreds of horses in my career and worked with many hundreds more. The five best horses of my career were as follows:

Horse #5. Vices: Cannot pull mane or body clip without heavy sedation. Must be in front when hacking in group. Why it’s worth it: Horse of a lifetime for his rider.

Horse #4. Vices: Free because he failed his PPE so badly at 5yo. Needs $800 shoes from a top farrier every 6 weeks. Why it’s worth it: Competed at the upper levels of eventing very successfully and reliably for 11 years.

Horse #3. Vices: Poor mover in the trot, extremely hot, needs a very kind rider. Why it’s worth it: Evented through advanced level, national champion at intermediate.

Horse #2. Vices: May rear and buck. Kicks and bites on ground. Will not go in any wash stall. Why it’s worth it: Never once dropped his rider. Evented through advanced level.

Horse #1. Vices: Incredibly spooky, poor mover in trot, chip on X-rays. Why it’s worth it: Successful and prolific advanced horse, sold and exported to a European Olympic team.

Our horse shopping advice to you? Be a good horseman.

If the horse makes you smile every day, who cares if it’s tough to pull its mane?

If the horse takes the best care of you, who cares if it flinches trotting past a trash can? Use your inside leg.

If the horse does the job you need it to do, who cares if it needs a good farrier? They should ALL have good farriers.

If the horse saves your behind every time you don’t see a distance, who cares if it cribs on a feed tub?

Good luck, happy shopping, and for the love of unicorns, stop seeking things that don’t exist or you’ll never find it.

🌹 2019 🌹16.3 HH 🌹TB mare JC: O’Stella’s Rose 🌹 Lightly raced (1 start) Stella is a willing mare with big lofty gaits with nice natural suspension and rhythm. She has had a long and slow restart with lots of exposure to different elements and is ready for someone to continue her training and take to the show rings! Could go in any direction: brave and has been over some cross country elements, steady and rhythmic for a hunter prospect, and fancy enough for the dressage court. Stella is easy to be around and enjoys getting attention. Happy out or in, hacking alone, trailering, etc. She has no injuries or vices and currently in front shoes with no other maintenance. PENDING 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: JC: Storming Lion aka "Leo" 2018 17.0hh Gelding ( KANTHAROS - MOSTBEAUTIFULSTORM, BY STORM BOOT ) Leo is owned by a true beginner adult amateur who is selling due to relocating out of state. He is the AA friendly horse who is willing, uncomplicated, and enjoyable to be around. He has no vices and is low maintenance. Leo has been off property and casually ridden trail riding etc (his current owner does not show but he would be happy to go do that!) He is a soft snaffle mouth for flat and jump, a leg ride, and schooling small courses. I could see him excelling in any direction (eventing, h/j, dressage, casual fun mount, etc) Priced currently to reflect finding him a great home and giving someone an opportunity to finish developing a quality horse. Leo is in full training until he sells so price WILL increase with time, training, and any showing.

Next up from a successful show, Suey! She has been a super game and fun mare that I’ve been lucky to enjoy starting slowly over the winter and now piloting her first event back out again. She had a solid dressage, double clear in both stadium and XC to finish in 3rd place!! Thankful her owner is trusting me with her talented OTTB and looking forward to a move up!

Connor has all the training to be as competitive as you want and has the personality to make him enjoyable as a partner! Connor has show experience in the jumpers through 1.0m- most recently a trip to WEC Ohio bringing home many blue ribbons! He is reliable and friendly for a competent AA/YR but also talented enough for Pro. Happy to trail ride, hack out, trailer, stand, and do all the things a show horse does plus have a good mentality about it! A little delayed due to the craze of K3DE week but Bruin and I had a great, educational experience with Sharon White and came away with new confidence and excitement as a pair! So thankful to have these clinics available in the area, big thanks to Elissa Gibbs for hosting!

Jumping this horse is so, so fun! He’s for sale to someone who wants to jump and loves the scope! 🤩

Max Q continues to be our shared dream horse! He came out with improvements in each phase from our past Training levels together and the highlight was his double clear XC on Sunday where he easily made time around a tough track with plenty of questions. He is the ultimate unicorn to take his adult amateur owner around trials and clinics one weekend, pack his tiny human around in a lead line the next, and then run around with me at Training- mind you, barefoot! Likely the best representation of an OTTB there ever will be and I’m so lucky to be one of his riders 🥰🦄

Boston Flagship is now an official event horse! Spring Bay was the best experience for him and I’m so proud of his work! I knew mentally this was a challenge and he was the most grown Saturday with his mental composure he’s shown me yet! A solid test where we could practice like we were schooling at home with one whoops moment but it stayed in that moment and was an overall good test. Stadium he warmed up and jumped around making me laugh and smile the whole time. One rail from learning where his spindle legs are but he was much improved since his last round. Sunday he let me know he was nearing his limit so with a tantrum about a turn that in the past could’ve resulted in the end of anything productive, the fact that he stayed in it mentally with me and recovered to go and complete the course was massive! He is beyond tired from his biggest weekend yet but I know he’s a new horse from it with much confidence gained!

Major gold star today to training boarder, Talonner! Look at the canter on this future hunter superstar!

Sale horse, Webster, with a quick jump school this evening! I think he’s ready for a bigger challenge 🤩

𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭: Ardie got lots of attention when he first arrived for his handsome looks and I'm happy to report he's turned into a star pupil under saddle now too after discovering how fun this sport horse stuff is! He's a young, big, leggy dude who struggled to find space for all his limbs and body parts. Now after some proprioception practice and new skills, he's confidently bopping over fences and eager for more each ride!
