Angel update!

A few of you wanted new Angel pics, so of course you get them 😃

Angel is thriving in her new home, she is still underweight as she hasn’t reached 6 lbs yet, but is getting better everyday and has made such great progress from that angel that was rescued not too long ago.

Also who else besides me loves her flopped up ear, seems like that’s her sleeping position.

Mission Statement: Oregon Dachshund Rescue., Inc.

I have been involved with dog rescue since I was 17 While I was in high school, I volunteered my time to help at the Animal Aide in Portland, OR.

My rescue efforts began in 1989 when I opened a dog boutique store on NW 23rd, in Portland, Oregon. This store was specifically dedicated to dog related merchandise and was the first of its kind in
Oregon. I became increasingly interested in the Dachshund breed and started carrying more Dachshund themed merchandise in my store. I met and became friends with many Dachshund lovers, as well as dog lovers in general.

Through my customers, I became aware of the increase in puppy mills and backyard breeders, and that sometimes their were upwards of 30 people trying to sell Dachshunds puppies. I learned there were a number of people who hadn’t researched the breed to understand the needs of these special little dogs. Due to this negligence these dachshunds were being surrendered to the humane society, abandoning them or abusing them. Just as we see today, some of these Dachshunds had behavioral issues, biting children or barking excessively. According to the American Kennel Club, in 2001, Dachshunds were the 4th most popular breed and the most popular of the small breeds. Thus, there was an abundance of Dachshunds being bred for profit, which still continues today. I spent quite a bit of time researching and discovered that the Humane Society and dog shelters in Oregon and Washington were euthanizing healthy young Dachshunds simply because they ran out of room and the dog's time was up. Within Oregon and Washington there weren't any rescues specifically dedicated to these this breed.

I asked my customers to spread the word that I would take Dachshunds in and find them a new home. I could not bear the thought of these dogs being euthanized simply for no good reason. During that time I rescued over 500 dogs. In 2002, I started the Oregon Dachshund Rescue., Inc. and created a website so more people would be informed that their was a rescue for Dachshunds and that they had another option to re-home them instead of the Human Society or another shelter.

Currently, our rescue takes in 1-3 Dachshunds on average/daily. In the last 18 months alone, We have rescued and placed 357 Dachshunds from throughout the state of Oregon, as well as Washington. Humane Societies and dog shelters within the states of Oregon and Washington, as well as private parties also contact our rescue when the dog has run out of time, and is due for to be euthanized. They are then saved by our rescue. Our rescue has also began rescuing Dachshunds from Mexico.

Every Oregon Dachshund rescue dog receives a vet visit checkup. The majority of dogs need all shots. However, some need extensive work, including surgery for broken bones, or dental surgery to clean or remove bad teeth, ear mites, etc. The last two dogs that were dropped off incurred over $1500 of veterinary care between them.

My goal is to find these dogs great new forever homes, however I am unable to recover the veterinary cost as many of these dogs veterinary charges greatly exceed the adoption fee which is currently $495. I cannot reasonably ask people to pay more than that, otherwise I would never be able to place a rescue dog. The Humane Societies and shelters do not provide any funding, and our rescue must rely solely on donations. The number of Dachshunds needing rescue has continued to grow as well as veterinary costs.

We have transitioned and are now 501(c)3 corporation. This will help us secure volunteers and contributions in a structured manner. As well as to continue doing everything that we can to rescue every Dachshund in need and find each of them a good, forever home. This includes continuing to save street dogs (dachshunds and chi weenies) from Mexico, with a plan to increase these rescues.
