I think the hens knew Cedric was not feeling well. After all the drama at my place, I spread some chicks around to some of my trusted friends to raise for me. The first batch has come back! Three handsome boys and 1 khaki female. It looks like Kami will have a fresh cockerel when she’s ready! Hen raised babies! Thank you Debra! ❤️

Slowly getting all the birds moved to their new and improved temp pens 😳. Just moving a bird is really not as easy as it sounds. There’s a lot more room in these pen than it seems. Thanks so much to Working Cat Project for letting me borrow their cat structures from storage. They work perfectly!

Thank you Kami! I have been coveting your c0ck(erel) since he grew up. Introducing Gene, Cedric’s son. I grew out all three of my hatched cockerels last year and none of them had this level of color. This dude has some nice chocolate in him. Thank you Kami!!!
It is with great sadness that I let you know Cedric passed away. This fabulous rooster, who enjoyed spurring me occasionally was acquired with his lady loves, from Loving Hands Chicken Ranch and enjoyed two years here before being in a tornado and nearly drowning in the flash flood. He was unable to return to the coop and passed yesterday. Out of respect I let Angela know first. He was a very special guy. I will miss him. Two of his offspring and my backups also did not make it through all of this stress.
So glad I just put some chicklets outside about 45 mins ago.
Why do I always get the crazy ones?
For people who chose waffle prizes from me, polish eggs are slightly delayed, two orders of pea eggs have been shipped and diffusers will be sent Monday 5/20. Who would have thought pea eggs were more plentiful than Polish 😂😂😂😂. They are missing their leading man who is on a rest break due to a massive yeast infection. His darn crest is too big 😂
I feel like I haven’t made a ton of chicken progress. We have but we haven’t. There are lots of decisions to be made. Birds to move around. Breeds to downsize. Sometimes it feels paralyzing. I need good strong temp housing but then where am I going to put the permanent housing if both have to occupy the same space?
Then this needs to be done ASAP. Ugh. Stress.
I was cleaning out the brooders in my garage last night and this little gem made my evening. Say hello to Mr. Wonderful.

Every day is like an egg hunt at my property right now. I’m so proud of my pups that I can trust them to take care of my birds during this time of trial. I stumbled upon these two eggs last night.
Yesterday I went through and reported a bunch of scammers, now I have angry faces all over my profile and posts. They have since been blocked. I’m glad you all know the truth. I’m not even worried about it. 💕

My foster marans clan is currently occupying last years baby/growout pen. So what to do with all these February hatch babies? Just move them in I guess! My fosters have fosters!
the rooster looks perturbed but they are all being very nice. Just need to add on a set of lower waterers.
These are not sop marans but they are very sweet and healthy birds. These are the dark layer flock. Will be nice to see these guys grow out. The chicks this year have been very healthy. Very minimal losses. Makes me happy going into next season.

How many different rumors are there about ranger meat birds? Well, mine have broken every “supposed” rule and also entered into the pregnancy pact with her coop mates, the Bielefelders! Yes they do lay eggs, LOTS of eggs. Yes, they can just fall over and die of heart failure, but mostly, have not. Yes, they can go broody!
This pregnancy pact was not approved by me, the boss. Ugh. Why are my leghorns broody? “Hens rarely go broody in this breed…”

Meet this beautiful sweet bronze pied boy. He has a not so secret, secret. He has vitiligo, which results in white feathers, but the change occurs over time. The bird may have normal coloring when young, but the bird turns whiter as it ages. It is caused by the progressive loss of pigment cells with age. You can see his transformation from year to year through today below. Good breeders will not breed birds with this defect, which is why he is not in the breeding pen, but instead, being living art. Some people refer to this as progressive pied or progressive graying, but vitiligo is the proper term and it often results in blindness, which for a peafowl in the wild is a death sentence, as they cannot flee predators. Please be careful when buying peafowl and research their history.
