Did you know that dogs bites are highly preventable? With responsible pet ownership, education, and staying away from unsafe situations – especially with children – goes a long way. Here are some general solutions that we humans can do to play our part in preventing dog bites.

-Avoid interacting with dogs who are without their owner.
-Always ask a dog owner for permission to pet their dog.
-Stay away from petting dogs while they are eating, sleeping, injured, or not feeling well.
-Minimize overexuberant play, which can lead to nipping and biting.

- Take an extra 10 minutes out of your day to play with your dog.
- Spend a few extra minutes on a walk with your pup.
- Has it been a while since you took pics of your pup? Why not take some new ones?

If you don’t have a dog:
- Donate items to a local shelter: shelters rely on volunteers and donations.
- Spend a few hours volunteering at a local shelter.
- Offer to walk shelter dogs – they could use companionship and love.

As some areas prepare for fall weather, it’s still hot and humid here. Please see below signs of a heatstroke in your dog, and the recommended immediate actions if they experience one.

🚨 What does heatstroke in a dog look like?
- Excessive panting and drooling
- Trouble breathing
- Staggering
- Seizures
- Bloody diarrhea
- Very dark urine concentrated in color
- Vomiting
- Dry chapped nose
- Dark or bright red tongues and gums

🚨 What to do if your pet has heatstroke:
- Immediately call your veterinarian
- Move your pet to a cooler area
- Avoid sudden cooling (like putting your pet in an ice bath)
- Apply isopropyl alcohol 70% to their foot pads, place a cool damp towel on their back, and allow them to drink small amounts of water

September is National Preparedness Month. Step 1 in preparation is to make a plan including your pet. Bad weather can happen in a hurry, and having a plan can make huge difference in your preparations.

Make sure to note which shelters, family members, or hotels will accept your pet.

It is important to have food and water supplies for both your family and your dogs.

This is a good time to update your records including tags, microchip information, and having current vaccination records.
