Taking the summer off? Get your equipment checked, food plots or brush piles taken care of
work on “simple commands” to make sure dogs are following like they need.
Get pigeon pens tended to. Repair as needed. Order birds (quail) for training.
Don’t get ready to start training in the fall only to find something broke or forgotten. Be a good scout. Be prepared!

Working on redoing my launchers. I got the instructions given to me by a friend. The elcectronics are supposed to be better than anything on the market at a better price. We’ll see.
It starts with 2 handheld radios. A rechargeable battery, electronic trigger, a relay, and a actuator arm. (Used in electronic automobile door locks. It is triggered by keying up the mic to launch the bird. It has 42 channels, so it can be used to trigger 41 bird launcher. It has a longer distance than standard launchers.
I ordered all the parts online, along with a project Bo’s to house everything. All the parts for 2 units was $110.00 with shipping. I already had 4 handhelds and may need to get another launcher to have a 3rd.

Stay tuned! Still waiting on a few parts.

Keep your kennels clean and cool during the summer months. We clean each run at least twice a day and spray down the concrete twice a day. As well as water constantly.
Dirty kennels cause flys and disease issues. Cool kennels keeps it bearable. We plan on installing “misters” soon.

I’ve heard it said, “He’s a professional handler and we can’t compete.” Well that notion is absolutely absurd. Think about it for a second.
While a pro definitely handle many dogs in a stake, he has the numbers in his favor. If 10 dogs are entered and he has 5. Statistics will tell you he’s got a 50% chance of winning.
When a pro goes to work every morning, he may have 20 or more dogs to train. He can only spend a allotted amount of time with each dog. On the other hand, an individual owns a dog. He spends a lot of time with the dog. There is a bond that grows between the two. That will translate to the field. He works for you because 1) he wants to. Or 2) He wants to do everything in the world to make you happy.
Be the guy who has the dog everyone wants to be concerned about when you walk on the field. That happens when you build that special relationship with your dog.
Have fun and good training.

Just out of the hospital gives one time to reflect or adjust your goals for training. It’s funny how we get into a routine and forget about our goals.
Sure, we want to get our dog STW&S, we want a perfect retrieve, etc. But, what are we doing to accomplish that goal. In other words, are we actually going beyond the scope of goal. For example, I got caught up training a pup through the basics into the advanced stages. I really wanted to get him out more and be a pup. It was time to take a step back. Not that I was wrong, it’s just time to give him a break from training. All’s good. Let him run and have fun. Doesn’t take long.
Point is. Take time to reflect on your strategy. Do we need to change something up. Sit down once a week and challenge yourself. Keeping your dog on the right course should be our main goal, even if we need to step back and redirect.
Have fun and good training.

Attitude: That should be the first priority in training a bird. Actually, any dog.
Why does attitude matter? Lots of obvious reasons.
1) So you don’t take your feelings out on the dog. I’ve got a friend ( pro. The trains after a full time job) who if he’s had a bad day will go play with the pups or young dogs first thing. It gets his mind right.
2) It could be make your dog skittish, aggressive, our just down right crawling under your feet. This adds time to tor goal of finishing you dog in a timely manner.
3) It could make you lead to “collar abuse.” This can cause collar shyness or cause issues with training down the road.

Like I said, play with a puppy. Your dog or take the day off. Sometimes just taking a day will recharge your outlook on dog training. Your attitude will affect your dogs attitude. Your dog thinks you the greatest person in the universe. Don’t prove him wrong!
Good raining and have fun!

I saw a story on CBS early morning show about dogs behavior being “learned” and that all dogs, in themselves, are not aggressive, destructive, etc. The behaviors are learned.
While certain breeds are different, or all breeds are the same is a topic for another time. (Have you ever seen a terrier trained to point?) I want to talk about learned or trained behavior.
Left to their own devices, an untrained dog will develop bad habits. They can be outright destructive, bite, trash can monsters, etc. Ever dog owner should spend time with their dog, teaching them to live in a humans world. If they turn out not to be good citizens, who’s fault is that?
Should you do it yourself? If you have the time, patience, and like to ”learn as you go.” Then by all means yes! Puppy classes, many books are available to help you with that. If you don’t have the time or desire or patience, there are many avenues to pursue. Training kennels, doggie day car, etc offer other avenues that professionals can help with.
If you choose to get your pointing breed puppy going the right way, let me help. We can develop a plan to do it yourself, or we can help train your dog here. They will learn, “bird dog things” as my wife calls them as well as house training, crate training, house manners, etc. Let me know or PM me at Burnie Stokes or Tascosa Bird dogs. We would love to help.
