People often ask “what does a normal training session look like?”
Well, that actually depends on a lot of factors.
Sometimes we’re doing drills to focus on growth in a specific skill set. Other times, we are spacing out antlers so the dogs have to hunt 10-15 minutes between each find to replicate shed season.
This specific session was made to replicate a UKC course, so there were 5 antlers in a 50x100 yard area, and finding them as quickly, and efficiently as possible was the goal.
It is more about how the dog hunts, than the actual time, but Sadie was under 2 minutes on this run, which we always like to see.
How it all started! Here is Scott describing one of his early conversations after deciding to make an antler training aid for his dog. Catch the whole episode from the link in our bio!...#kansassheddogspodcast #boneclone #sheddog

1️⃣CONFIDENCE IS KEY! Don’t have your dog try to pick up an antler that is too big. We don’t want them to fail.2️⃣Instead, start small in size and slowly work your way up to bigger antlers.3️⃣ Cheer them on. Give them praise, belly rubs, or treats. Whatever positive reinforcement works for them. And remember progress, no matter how small, is good!
Dogs and Antlers. That’s the good life!
⁉️What is your favorite state to shed hunt⁉️ We love seeing different terrains of new states and areas, and adapting our strategy accordingly! We are in western Kansas, and even going to eastern Kansas, the landscape changes dramatically. This year we capped off our shed season with a trip to South Dakota. Even though we warned about their deer population being way down, it was a blast to go up there and wrap up our shed season! 🦌
Can’t believe our May event was already a month ago!
I took this video while tearing down courses on Sunday after the event was completed. They take much longer to put up, than they do to take down LOL.
It’s a bittersweet feeling - glad to have the event wrapped up completely and all the stress behind us, but also sad because we do love hosting these events, and seeing our shed dog friends.
But now it’s on to the next one! Hope to see you at our “Dog-of-the-year” event in September!
Throwback Thursday to our South Dakota trip and this find.
We say it often - there’s no greater sight than a dog running back to you with an antler that you didn’t see on the ground. Well we might have to revise that. Watching a dog run back with an antler you didn’t see on the ground while you’re still in the side by side might be even better!
Do you practice for antlers in water?
You should! It doesn’t happen often, but we do occasionally come across an antler sticking out of a water source. Having a dog that has practiced picking up an antler out of water only makes them more confident when you experience that situation!
Fun Fact: this picture is from our champion level course at our last UKC Elite Shed Dog trial.
This course took advantage of the natural occurring water source and used it as a “water plant”.
“Water plants” used to be a staple on a UKC course. Sadly, we have moved away from that degree of difficulty on courses (generally speaking). I remember in 2019 running at the national championship and having some TOUGH water plants 🤯.
Maybe in 2024 more clubs will start using water plants again 🤞.
Good dogs. Good antlers. Beautiful sunsets. We love this time of year!!!

🔥 Match Set Found!!🔥This deer dropped back on December 12th. Both sides within 24 hours. Caliber found side number one and Boone matched it up finding the right side about 250 yards away. That makes find number 2 and 3 of shed season 2024. Nothing prepares your shed dog like finding the real thing, so we’re jacked to have these two fresh finds!
The time is here‼️ Shed season is finally upon us!!!Who else will be out this weekend looking for antlers?! Drop a comment below 👇
It’s spring time!! You know what that means 👀
