See you there? Indoor playdate this Saturday, January 25th from 10-noon. Noah’s Arf in Beaverton, 14195 SW Millikan Way, has a large indoor playroom with lots of room for greyhounds to run around, and they offer private playdates for breed-specific groups, with no other dogs around. The room has high chain-link, movable fencing and rubberized flooring. They can even section off an area just for senior or shy greys that don’t enjoy the more rambunctious hounds. Please bring a muzzle for your hound.
There is free parking, and the cost for a 2-hour event with greyhounds and galgos only is $15 per hound.
You need to create an account on their website or app and submit proof of current rabies, kennel cough (Bordetella) and distemper vaccinations prior to your first visit and have your dogs on flea prevention. They must also be spayed or neutered, as are all greys adopted through us. There are also 3 agreements on the log-in page that must be signed.

The room has high chain-link, movable fencing and rubberized flooring. They can even section off an area just for senior or shy greys that don’t enjoy the more rambunctious hounds.

If you would be interested in having indoor playdates at this location on the weekend – either Saturday or Sunday - please let us know. There is free parking, and the cost for a 2-hour event with greyhounds and galgos only is tentatively set at $15 per hound.

Email Janet at [email protected] if you are interested, including if you have a senior or shy grey that would do best in a separate area. Also include the best days for you. If there is enough interest, we will go ahead and reserve the room for later this month or early February. (the weekend of Valentine’s day is not available)

Greyhounds needed for acupuncture training in Portland. The International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) wants us to provide greyhounds for training veterinarians in Portland for February 5th and 6th, with four two-hour slots each day starting at 8am and ending at 5pm. They are looking for 5 dogs for each of the 4 sessions on both February dates, or 20 per day. Dates and times shown below., contact IVAS directly at the email address below.

IVAS loves to have greyhounds because of their temperament and their body structure/short hair makes it easy for trainees to see the acupuncture locations on the dog. IVAS makes a donation to GPA Northwest based on the number of our hounds we provide.

The training is scheduled at the downtown Hilton, with free parking for those bringing dogs. If you have a dog or dogs with medical conditions that could benefit from acupuncture treatment, like chronic pain, rear-end weakness, neurological symptoms, etc. and you would be okay having your dog treated by an experience practitioner, please provide that medical information to the practitioner at the session.
You will need to stay in the same room as your dog during the session you sign up for.

Here is an invitation from Deborah Prevratil, IVAS Executive Director, including how to sign up. Note you will respond directly to IVAS and not go through GPA:

“Hello to all GPA Northwest,
The International Veterinary Acupuncture Society is back in Portland, OR and looking for dogs for their acupuncture Mentorship training in February. We reached out to GPA Northwest to participate this year in their training on February 5-6, 2025, for FREE acupuncture treatments. Some of you may have participated in their last Mentorship program in 2020.

IVAS invites you to participate in acupuncture treatments for dogs in your care/foster/or been adopted out that can benefit from Acupuncture treatment. This is a free acupuncture treatment for your dogs. Acupuncture is basically painless with very small acupuncture needles being used on the dogs. There is no sedation, and every treatment is done by a licensed veterinarian. Some of the benefits of acupuncture are pain relief, arthritis, skin allergies, behavioral, gastrointestinal issues as well as many other conditions benefit from an acupuncture treatment. Besides treatment you will also receive recommendations for your dog. Dogs can be in your foster care or be adopted dogs that could benefit from acupuncture.
The location of the IVAS Mentorship is:
The Hilton Portland Downtown, 921 SW 6th Ave. Portland, OR 97204.
If you would like to sign up for an acupuncture treatment, IVAS has the following appointment times below for each day: They have 5 opening during each time slot so multiple dogs can be brought at one time if needed. You will need to email Debbie Prevratil at [email protected] and let me know what day and what appointment time you would like, your dog’s name, age, your name and your cell phone number. I will email you back and confirm your appointment time. Below are the times needed by IVAS

Greyt Information from Wendy Oberlander about New Year's Fireworks. Thanks Wendy!
·
Fireworks Safety Tip for New Years
1. Our hounds preferred safe spot (kennel, draped in noise dampening blankets). Keep those collars on with tags and contact info correct, make sure microchip info is current, a good GPS tracker on your hounds collar is a worthwhile investment (we are currently using Tractive, use what works best for you).
2. Box fan and white noise machine going to help drown out the noise.
3. Early out for bathroom needs, on leash and harness in case of unexpected booms, get that energy out early in the daytime.
4. Early feeding since they will most likely not eat once the booms start. Inside brain engagement, look for fun food puzzles and activities, snuffle mat activities to keep them occupied early in the day 👏
5. Early in the year talk with your veterinarian about any appropriate prescriptions to help (we are currently using trazodone and gabapentin). Do a test run ahead of time to make sure you know how it affects your dog, that way if it doesn’t work or has an adverse effect you can update your plan with your vet ✅
6. TV/Music going throughout the day and into the nighttime to help muffle out the noise, in some areas the booms will start way before dark.
7. Keeping the humans calm, relaxed , and alert as this is the most common time of year for a loose dog type of scenario.
8. Updated full body and video images of the dogs alone and with you for proof of ownership) incase of an inadvertent escape.
9. Check and recheck those gates, windows, and doors this is not a drill!
10. For us fireworks nights are not celebration nights with extra family and family, they are stay home and support the dogs to keep them safe first and foremost. If this is the first fireworks season event with your hound please err on the side of caution ⚠️ , you never know how your dog will react, some are hiders and some will do anything to escape it can be very dangerous and unpredictable!!!
11. Thunder-style coats, ear wraps, calming sprays, and homemade style options can also help in a pinch, as can some over the counter treats and supplements (always check with your vet first). Some people also have luck with counter conditioning their hound to associate the firework sounds as a positive thing by feeding very high value treats (this is a long process and is often done with help from a certified canine behaviorist, your vet can usually help with an excellent referral). My firework fearful hounds have been too shut down for this particular tactic to work but it has been successful with the getting them to love the vacuum!
12. Have a plan in place if the worst happens, who do you call , where do you post with a lost dog, do you know how to make a poster, all your hounds key info,( are you already apart of greyhound amber alert on Facebook or similar), contact info for your adoption group, if injured 1-5th case Vet ER’s to take your hound to as it is typically an extremely busy night.
Wishing Everyone a Calm & Quiet New Year’s Eve 🐾❤️🐾🚫🎇

We wish you all a wonderful 2024 holiday season. Thank you for adopting a greyhound (or two) this year and for your continued support. It is a privilege to offer Irish and Australian racers forever homes in the Northwest, and to welcome previously-adopted greys to new homes when it is necessary. We are honored to work with such a special breed of dog, with the foster families who open their homes to help newly-retired greys make the transition to forever homes, and with the adopters who love them.
