This has been an awesome summer for training. There is nothing more rewarding than making it possible for an 8 year old to finally be able to walk and bond with their dog, or changing the relationship between dog and owner so they can live happily and peacefully together, or helping a dog overcome fear/anxiety and live more relaxed, or helping a dog see that there is no reason to protect resources. Most of all, it’s incredibly rewarding to witness the change in relationship due to all of the hard work the owners who love them put into it. I love what I do because I get to meet and work with awesome dogs, but more importantly I get to meet people who love and are committed enough to them to make those changes. The transformations are incredibly rewarding!

Talk about drama! Riot is still in the shaping phase of “sit pretty”. He’s anxious because he doesn’t have good balance yet. When I notice him starting to amp up, I tell him to settle down, and he falls over into his “dead dog” routine 😂

Repost: Facebook wouldn't allow me to edit the previous video that somehow got flipped sideways and distorted Riot just turned 6 months over the weekend. I’m happy with the progress we have been making. Most important of all, we have been having a lot of fun with training. Here is an example of some of the stuff we have been working on. It’s not flawless yet, but at 6 months I certainly don’t expect it to be. He is getting good with his heel, the basic sit/down/stand, a few cutesy tricks, and I am teaching him some beginning steps, such as the get-it/give/out for tougher skills he will be learning down the road. I just taught him how to free “stack” the other day, and he caught right on. Next we will be tightening up his stack and getting ready to do some conformation showing for the experience.

Having full control over anything your dog is eating is very important. You should be able to verbally remove your dog from its food, treats, or anything else they may get their jaws on. This not only helps prevent development of resource guarding issues, but it can protect your dog if they go to eat something that may harm them. Children and other pets are especially notorious for intervening with a dog who is chewing on or eating something, and often suffer the consequences of a resource guarder’s bite or attack. By being able to verbally remove your dog from the resource, dangerous accidents can be prevented.

Riot is 13 weeks! Here we are practicing “place” and “heel.” Getting better every day!

It is so important to keep your kids involved in the training efforts of your puppy/dog. Not only does it help your dog learn, but it teaches them that they need to respect and listen to all members of the family. Additionally, it helps your children to learn the proper way to handle and treat your pet. By getting your children involved, you help to build a mutual respect between animal and child which helps to keep both of them safe and happy.
