Oh no, more babies! Rabbits are incredibly prolific and unfortunately, some show up at the shelter pregnant. Their gestation period is just about 30 days and they can get pregnant again within minutes of giving birth! There are entirely too many animals without permanent homes. This is why it’s so important to spay and neuter our pets, and rabbits are no exception. If you are interesting in fostering rabbits, we want to hear from you!
Are you vegan or vegetarian? You might want to consider a pet whose diet aligns with yours. As herbivores, rabbits thrive on a diet consisting hay, fresh vegetables, and a small amount of pellets. Rabbits make terrific house pets but sadly, they are one of the most frequently abandoned animals in shelters. Bunnies provide companionship, emotional support, and a sense of connection to nature. They are intelligent animals capable of forming strong bonds with their owners, offering a source of love and companionship in return. Won’t you consider adding one or two to your household? The best way to select a pet rabbit for the family is to set aside preconceptions regarding breed, s*x and age, and to meet and interact with several rabbits for long enough to get a feel for their individual personality. Like dogs and cats, rabbits are all different in the way they interact with people and each other. Come meet the gang and choose the perfect bunny (or bunnies!!) for you! If you’ve ever wanted a pet you could sit with for hours, rabbits are for you. They love to be pet and massaged, scratched on the top of the heard or behind their ears. Some rabbits will nudge your hand if you stop petting them, letting you know they want you to keep it up! True lap rabbits are not all that common, but most will sit next to you on the floor or sofa and practically melt when you pet them. It’s relaxing for both of you! An unfortunate misconception about rabbits is that they belong in cages. Pet stores and online shops will often try to sell cages to new rabbit owners, but rabbits need interaction and space to run around. Keeping them in a cage is as inhumane as keeping a dog or a cat in a cage their whole life and keeping them in a hutch outside is even worse! Rabbits are actually very social pets, and do best when they are made part of the family. Many people set their bunnies up with an exercise pen and let them out to interact, play and run around for at least a few hours every day. Others give them free roam of a single room or even the whole house. Whichever you choose, you’ll need to give your rabbits a home base area with a few basics: A litter box (yes, they can be litter box trained!), hay, ceramic water crock (bottles aren’t great except as a secondary backup), a hide space (something as simple as a cardboard box with a couple of cut out entrances will do nicely) and a few toys (store bought, DIY or both!) To keep them stimulated.

Rabbits are very quiet pets.They don’t bark like dogs or meow for attention. Rabbits generally communicate through body language, but they can also make sounds. They may softly honk when they are excited, growl or grunt if they are upset or trying to scare someone away, purr, hiccup or even snore! The loudest sound a rabbit makes is when they thump their hind legs against the ground. Thumping can indicate fear or danger but many times it’s your rabbit’s was of indicating it disapproves of something you are doing and can be pretty comical! The more time you spend with your pet, the better you’ll learn to interpret it’s communication style. Presto is a little more vocal than the rest of our current residents. The Guinness Book world record is currently 16 years! Rabbits are very clean animals and have an adorable bathing routine. Like cats, they lick themselves all over. When they clean their ears and face, they will lick their paws and wipe their face and pull their ears down. So cute! All that licking means your rabbit may be ingesting a lot of fur. You can give your bunny a hand by brushing regularly to help remove loose hair. Most really enjoy it so it’s great way to bond with your rabbit too. Here’s Taffy washing his face. Rabbits are playful and curious creatures. Like dogs, they require enrichment. Giving rabbits things to play with on their own keeps them occupied and can significantly improve their mental health. Good toys promote exercise and natural curiosity which help to reduce boredom and depression. We need your help in spreading the news that our beautiful, Ash, is scheduled to be euthanized on December 26th. For more information, please contact Gabby at [email protected]. If you look closely at the first photo of Ash, you’ll find three powerful words written by Maya Angelou: “Still I Rise.” These words resonate on so many different levels, especially when I think about Ash’s situation. Ash has been in the shelter system for 354 days, since he arrived as a stray on December 23rd. It’s been almost a whole year without a home or a family. Even the most adaptable of dogs struggle in shelter environments, and Ash is no exception. Ash is barrier reactive, meaning he barks and growls at his kennel door. Every day, Ash eagerly waits at his day yard door, excited to greet shelter staff and his volunteer friends. He adores human interaction and is affectionate and loving. During his time in a foster home, Ash enjoyed belly rubs and proved to be a well-behaved house guest. He is smart, knowing commands like sit, paw, down, and come. Ash is crate trained, house trained, and can be left alone without causing any mess. Although Ash had a challenging past, he thrives when he’s part of a family’s daily activities. The perfect home for him would be an adult-only (older kids) with no other pets. Ash has shown progress during walks with other dogs, he is playful, goofy, and loves treats. Ash also enjoys curling up on the couch to watch holiday movies on Netflix. Ash has taught us about resilience and the importance of finding love and stability.
