We had such a great time yesterday at Petco's Clear The Shelter Event. Lots of people stopping by and many adoption applications sent out. Everyone was napping by the end, and were zonked out when we made it back to our building. Great day!
Thank you so much to Petco for having all of us for the afternoon. Justine and her crew made sure we had what we needed, and we appreciate their support!
Thank you to all our volunteers who took care of all the cleaning at our building, did puppy baths, worked the event, and made sure everyone was safe.
Thank you all! Let's do it again soon!

Goldie
2020 - 2024
I was hoping if I just started posting this that the words would start to take shape in my head. They aren't. In fact, since late this afternoon, all that is forming is anger. It feels stupid...and a waste. Anger isn't helpful. It just causes more damage. But as someone told me recently. Let the feelings happen...let them show...they're real. There's nothing more real than tears.
Well that's freaking awesome....cuz tears and crying is about all there's been.
Goldie was supposed to thrive. She was so amazingly sweet and good. She wasn't any trouble. She was everyone's friend, greeted you with wags and dog smiles....and was the most amazing tennis ball fetcher there ever was.
It was supposed to be her turn to be loved. And we hope she knows she was at the end....by all of us at VCA and Family Pet Clinic.
Her surgery went well and it looked good for awhile. But she had too much going against her. Pancreatitis...then an ulcer. And then the fight was over. She was done. She wouldn't eat, wouldn't get up, and in the end she wouldn't lift her head. So late this afternoon we said goodbye.
Someone missed out. Someone really had no idea the beauty of this girl...inside and out. She's what everyone looks for...or should...in a best friend.
But what did she get? Ignored....if she would have been spayed, she could have had a better life and issues would have been caught early. If warning signs were addressed and not ignored, she would have been healthier....and stronger for the fight.
But it didn't happen. And now she's gone.
When does it end? When do lives like Goldie's mean something?
Or how about Red? Blind and diabetic
Or Molly and her 2 week old puppies that were dumped in a ditch last December?
Or Amal...left behind to fend for herself and living under an abandoned trailer.
Or Stella Rose...beaten cuz she was allowed to run.
Or Rosie and her 6 puppies.
Or the dozens and dozens of call about cats and kittens.
What now? Do we just go to bed and hope that tomorrow brings hope....and strength? Or do we lie awake and play scenarios over and over in our heads to come up with answers to the mindless and careless suffering.
For tonight, it's the latter.

Thank you, Krystal!

UPDATE!!
Well that was crazy! We were just notified by Kuranda that our goal has been met and donations are being processed. We will hold off making any updates to our Kuranda Wish List, but we can use other items such as paper towels, tall kitchen garbage bags and clorox wipes. Thank you all so much!!!

Our well kids would like everyone to share and/or donate to their cause. We have Kuranda (raised beds) that need replaced and some of our dogs are currently without one. If you're able to donate, we would greatly appreciate it! https://shelterbeds.org/donate/397100

It's been a week now...with no one coming forward to say she belongs to them. She had no collar...no microchip...nothing to say where or who she belonged to.
On July 27, we were contacted about a dog that had been hanging out in the same area for a few days. Animal Control had been contacted but she would seem to know how to disappear and reappear quickly.
After monitoring her coming and going, we decided a trap was about the only way we could catch her, keep her safe, and get her out of the extreme heat.
Interesting enough, it took one day....and she was caught. Maybe she decided she'd had enough...or maybe she'd had enough of the heat. Who knows.
But here's what we do know. No one has come for her. Traffic noises scare her. She shys away from human touch but is starting to accept it. And the well puppies are intriguing. ❤️
We also know, as we did with the Operation Rosie and the well puppies, there are some pretty wonderful people who watched over her, called for help, and came to visit her at VCA. We hope Mia learns as fast as Rosie did, that the helpers are out there. Thank you to all of them. ❤️

It's been a week....one that can either bring you down if you let it....or lift you up when you look around....or both.
So many calls and messages, lots of animals in need. And one caller stating they needed to find somewhere for their dog, but didn't want to mess with filling out a surrender form or information request. They just wanted to "drop her off somewhere".
This dog was lucky. People watching out for her and a breed specific rescue who moved quickly to make sure she was safe. Thank you Husker Weim Rescue, Inc.
And thank you to the Central Nebraska Humane Society for their donation of pet food for our AniMeals program and food pantry! And some pretty special people who unloaded over 1,000lbs of pet food. Thank you Carrie, Mary and Beckie!
And today, we were able to have a booth at the Grand Island Farmers Market, which was awesome! Thank you Brenda, Matt, Amber, Devin, Jake, Abby, Seth, Sharalyn, Stephanie, Tracie, Liza, Ashley, Don, Keith and Shirley for covering both locations on a busy Saturday.
I tell people all the time....our volunteers, fosters, and supporters are absolutely THE BEST! They not only show up, they are uplifting also. Each time they walk in the door. Their care of the animals. The time taken to kneel down to the scared ones, the new ones. The brushing, head rubs and belly rubs. They are amazingly kind humans. VCA is blessed with the best!

You read that right! We will be at the Grand Island Farmer's Market this Saturday!

Friday Night Update:
Goldie is recovering and will stay at the vet clinic through the weekend. The bad kidney was removed and the good kidney and ureter have been reattached to the bladder. Rest, TLC......and good meds. Keep the good vibes coming❤️
Sending as many pawsitive vibes as we possibly can Goldie's way.
She came to us about a month ago as an owner surrender. She is about 3 years old and was so extremely sick and miserable. What was originally thought to be pancreatitis and/or pyometra ended up being horribly plugged up from eating improper food, like balloons and potatoes. But that wasn't the worst part. She has been living with an ectopic ureter. In a dog with ectopic ureters, the ureters do not enter the bladder at their usual location; which interferes with the bladder's normal ability to retain urine. Which means she leaked urine constantly. And as she had not been spayed, her condition worsened until she was full of infection....and has one functioning kidney.
So this sweet dog needed A LOT of special care, which we decided to take on. Her spay is now done and she has been recuperating at the VCA Bed and Breakfast. It also meant lots of cleaning to keep everything sanitized...and daily spongebaths to keep her clean.
Tomorrow is her surgery, which involves cutting the ureter from its abnormal location and making a new opening at a more proper location and re-attaching it to the urinary bladder.
Special thoughts to her veterinarian and staff. She will need recovery time, then she will be back to being spoiled at VCA. This procedure may not take care of 100% of the leakage, but will make a difference in her life. And one kidney? She's a fighter....she can still have many years of a quality life. So we will fight for her too.
Thank you to those who have already donated to her care. We appreciate it!

"Operation Rosie" Update:
Less than 24 hours after being rescued from an abandoned well.....look at them now ❤️
And mama? She's trusting more....and letting us know she's ready to move on from the puppies.
And our 6 puppy pack? Doing well so far. (Pun not intended)
The well? Has new plywood over it. No more rescues needed here please.
Enjoy the pictures.....it was an amazing day ❤️

There are so many ways this situation could have ended badly…..MANY WAYS….but there was so much good in the people that were involved that it just seemed to be destined to work out this way.
Kayla, one of our awesome volunteers, received a call yesterday evening about a momma dog and puppies. They had fallen through an abandoned well and were laying at least 5 feet below ground. Mom was growling but not moving, and she was surrounded by her six puppies. The mom dog had been seen last week so the feeling was that they may have been down there for close to 48 hours.
Discussion started regarding how to get them out. There was limited space. Was mom hurt? Were any puppies hurt? Mom is protecting the pups….how the heck are we going to do this?
While we waited and assessed the best we could, it appeared mom was ok, but weak. And the puppies were also ok. At least from our vantage point from above.
The call was made to the on-call emergency vet….. and with some improvisation that worked amazingly well, we were ready to go with “Operation Rosie”. So, two extension ladders later, along with gloves, a canvas stretcher and the careful hands of two hero veterinarians, work started to rescue some unlucky.…soon to be lucky….lives. And with a little sedation, mom cooperated...so one by one each pup was brought up and out of the hole. Then mom was brought up on the stretcher. All seemed ok….but hungry. And mom would need a thorough exam.
The plan right now is that Rosie has a guardian angel ready to take her in and care for her. She will be vetted and her spay is already on the schedule. And VCA will look for a local foster home for the puppies until they are old enough, socialized enough, and healthy enough, to be adopted.
And some history on mom dog….she had been no one’s dog/everyone’s dog for the past four years. The benefits of being so close to rural areas. She had been seen off and on, had previous litters, and we understand there had been a few failed attempts to catch her….including her breaking out of a kennel. She is a force to be reckoned with. Being a mom and taking care of herself is what she knows. Now it’s her time to be cared for.
HUGE shout out to Dr Missy and Dr Summers from Animal Medical Clinic. They made the plan and it was executed in a way that left those of us in rescue smiling and shaking our heads. It really was awesome.
Thank you to the neighbors and the families who watched over her, noticed her absence and called for help. It worked. Seven lives saved.
Stay tuned for updates.

We've been getting more and more calls regarding cats and kittens needing homes.....new homes....all for varying reasons. And honestly, if we took every single one, we wouldn't be able to properly care for each one or afford to do all their vetting.
But one thing that does help us help them. Have them vetted....spay/neuter, tested for FeLV/FIV, vaccinated, dewormed....it helps us to help them. If keeping the cat isn't an option, get them vetted.
And as always....ADOPT! Space is at a premium and one adoption makes a HUGE difference at VCA. And there are more waiting to come in to our little bed and breakfast. Word on the street is our accommodations and maid service are 5 stars.....so ADOPT....and share our adoptables.
(Picture is Bella.....she will be available soon. She just woke up from her nap and felt her fans needed to see her tonsils and toe beans. Thank you, Bella.)
