WARNING -

Flea Collars – We do not recommend flea collars. We do not use them for our dogs. You should only address fleas or ticks as you see them and then only consult with your veterinarian. Here I make mention of this as too often new dog owners believe that the first thing they need to do is to install a flea collar on their puppy to keep any fleas at bay. Though the intention is meant to help their puppy it can actually hurt the dog as these flea collars can be fitted with highly toxic chemicals.

One such collar that I am aware of has the chemical “fipronil” as the killing agent. It is the agent used in the product called Termidor. This chemical was manufactured for the killing of termites. However, this chemical is also known to kill mites, ants, roaches, bees, wasps, frogs, birds, cats and dogs and a host of other things. This agent can be sprayed on an insect who will take it home and infect the nest. As other insects higher in the food chain eat the lower ones it spreads to the higher food chain. This chemical can also be spread; as it drys any insect brushing against it will also carry it to their nest.

It is very effective. If you spray it around your house within a matter of weeks all small life will be non-existent. While this might be desirable for termites and ants and bees and other such annoying things, it might not be desirable for your cat or dog.

If a flea or mite has bitten your puppy with this chemical on its flea collar it has the potential to make your puppy sick or even worse to cause death. Puppies need to be protected. Please use caution.
