I had the BEST ride on Flynn tonight. He has such a great handle now. Here is a nice long video to show what a great riding pony he is. He has gotten so much better at staying balanced, controlled, smooth and responsive. He can:

Walk serpentines on a loose rein ONE handed with an o ring snaffle.

Trot balanced small circles.

Stop and back on command.

Keep a lope in a smaller circle.

Flynn got his annual dental check 🦷 today. The vet said his teeth look great and did not have to do any grinding.

He does so well at the vet. He was the perfect patient today!

The expo is coming up on October 5th at the Williamson County Expo! If you are interested in adopting Flynn please fill out an application on the Bluebonnet Website and email [email protected] to let Kari know you’re interested!

Flynn’s ideal home would be with someone who wants to ride regularly. He is fine having days off between rides but he definitely likes having a job. He will come up to me in the pasture like he’s excited to “go to work”.

Flynn is at his best when he’s riding out on a ranch. He’s good around cows, he can open gates, he is surefooted on rocks and isn’t buddy sour so you can leave or approach other groups of horses if you need to.

Flynn is coming along as a playday pony. He is good with all the noises and sights. He does well riding in the arena with other horses and can lope the barrel pattern pretty decent. He doesn’t like going fast so he will probably never have a super fast time, but if you want to take him to a local show and just HAVE FUN he’s your guy!

Flynn’s personality can be described as goofy, expressive and dramatic. He will yawn and stick his tongue out if he is not entertained. He really likes his shoulder and back scratches and will let you know it! You can often tell what he’s thinking from the expression on his face. He is known to dramatically sigh after doing something, like what he just did was so hard and he needs to be praised for it lol. He has more whoa than go. He will saunter behind you when lead and needs decent encouragement to go faster. His 3 speeds are a really nice “rich walk”, a light bouncy trot and a slow lope. He is pretty easy going but sometimes the pony comes out in him and he will want to go a direction other than what the rider wants but can easily be corrected.

Flynn is 9 yrs old. Very healthy. 14 HH. Stocky build with good feet.

He has spooked in the past. His ideal rider would have enough balance to ride a few quick steps. He doesn’t spook on most rides these days, but it still happens from time to time.

This guy would make someone a very special ranch horse or all around horse. Please let me know if you have any questions about him!

Flynn’s second playday was a huge success. Here is his run from yesterday at the Rafter 77 Playday in Seguin. It was a bigger/longer event with more activity and he handled it so confidently. Below are the improvements since the first playday.

He rode in the practice area without spooking at the other horses running up behind him.

He rode alongside a neighborhood road without spooking at cars.

He was able to lope in the alley.

He ran faster in his barrel run.

He hunted the first barrel.

He had is head low and almost snoozed in between events instead of having his head high looking around.

Check out this SHOWPONY! Flynn won 4th out of 11 novice riders at the Scissortail Trail-A-Thon. It was a 3 part event. Part 1 was a video submittal/virtual pattern. Part 2 was the obstacle course. Part 3 was a technical course in the arena. The final scores considered the points earned in each part.

Flynn behaved beautifully, maybe because we schooled the night prior but he is on his way to being bomb-proof! He handled the obstacles like a champ and was trying hard to listen with all the distractions. As always shows teach you what you need to work on. Our focus for the next few weeks will be backing and control in the trot. I’m still very happy with him and how he’s doing. :)

Thank you Pauline for a great event!

I have to post the videos separately because of facebooks limitations. See those 3 videos in separate posts!

Flynn got a massage today! Thank you Christa Riddington for giving him an hour long TLC session! Christa was on-site for a client and offered to work on Flynn Pro-Bono since he is a Bluebonnet Rescue. She said Flynn behaved better than most of the horses she works on. She said his soreness was minor, not more than what would be expected for an athlete, but there were 3 areas that were a little stiff. Christa worked these spots and provided a recommendation so I can continue to work on those spots. Flynn was moving noticeably more freely after his massage. I’m so glad Christa could lend her expertise and time to help him feel better.

Here is Flynn’s first exhibition run at the Second Chance Cowgirl Playday (SCCP) in Caldwell. He was a little spooky at all the sights but kept his cool! I am super glad we got the left lead after the first barrel because that is the main thing we worked on this week. I will continue to take him to playdays and very excited to see his progress!

Flynn’s training is coming along nicely :) Successes for June include:

Picking up feet gently
Used to saddle
Walk/Trot under saddle
Loads in the trailer
Trailered to 2 covered arenas
Completed 2 trail rides

He was very nervous when asked for anything new and had to be gently introduced to all the above activities.

He is starting to display some disrespectful pony behaviors so next month I will have a firmer training approach. We will work on leading at my side instead of trailing behind me, more responsive transitions, and more active riding.

Thank you for following along!

Flynn is a 9 yr old QH gelding. He stands right at 14 HH. He has a nice bright red/sorrel color with a wide blaze and a BLUE eye! He has a round build, great feet, and moves smoothly, sometimes very quick!

He came to Bluebonnet from a neglect case in 2022, was gelded and competed in the 2022 Training Challenge. He was adopted at the training challenge but was returned in March 2024. He was assigned to me early because of the extra groundwork he needed. When I went to get him he was wide eyed, freaked out, had terrible feet, and was overweight.

When I first started working with him, I couldn’t approach him in the pasture or pick up his back feet. I have since spent a lot of time building his confidence/comfort level with people. He now can be caught in the pasture, travel to arenas, handle minor desensitization/spooking objects and is the friendliest guy at the barn!

I am so excited to track his progress and see how far he goes! So far I can tell he is athletic, personable, and curious. Stay tuned for updates, he is a special guy for sure!

Hi! My name is Katie Kirk. I grew up with horses and had lessons on horsemanship, western riding and barrel racing. I loved to help my mom Linda Kirk with her Bluebonnet Foster horses. I mostly helped with the “firsts”, first rides, first trail rides and first loping under saddle. I have since been promoted from crash dummy to primary trainer for my own foster training challenge Flynn!

I am doing the Bluebonnet Training Challenge to rehab and rehome a horse that was not given a fair chance. I hope to give Flynn confidence and skills required for his forever home, expand my horsemanship skills, and develop relationships with other trainers!

My special skill is Horsin’ around which I believe develops horses’ relationships with humans and expands their comfort level and allows them to have more FUN with their people. See the attached photo of me Horsin’ around.
