Have you ever heard that certain breeds of dogs are “stubborn” and can’t be trained using positive reinforcement?
Well I call BS!!
Meet Yuki, a Shiba Inu. Shibas are often labeled as stubborn and hard to train. This characteristic stems from their independent nature.
Unfortunately, when certain breeds are regarded as stubborn it can lead people to believe that they can’t be trained without corrections.
The problem with the myth that "some breeds need a firmer hand" than others sets up both dog and owner for an adversarial relationship right from the start.
And that’s not the kind of relationship most people want with their dogs.
Enjoy this clip of Yuki happily learning to go to his mat without the use of force.
Congratulations to Paw Sweet Paw on their second anniversary!!
Thank for inviting me!!

Training tip for multi dog households: Teach your dogs to take turns.
Just because the door opens doesn't mean you should go through it!
Learning not to rush out the door when it opens can be a lifesaving behavior. Duke is learning to wait to be invited and then focus on mom to start the walks!
Step three for teaching a stay:
Add in a distraction. Notice that I’ve gone back to being close to the dog and rewarding frequently. Gradually build duration and distance back up again.
Down stay step #2
Step two for teaching a stay:
When you work the dog up to about 10 seconds between treats, you can begin to work on the next criterion – distance. Start with small movements then gradually move farther away. Always return to the dog to reward.
Duke is learning a chin rest so he can willingly participate in grooming sessions.
A chin rest is used in cooperative care as a way to ask a dog to hold still for grooming or veterinary care.
By resting his chin on the towel, Duke is signaling that he is ready to engage in a handling procedure. If he feels he needs a break he can lift his chin in order to “opt-out” for a few seconds.
A chin rest empowers the dog to have a voice in what is happening to him which increases his willingness to participate.
Nice memories. Some of my kids and our adventurers over the years!
New Leashes
After all the rain we just had here in Southern California I was sick of my dog’s nylon collars and leashes being wet and stinky. So, I decided to try out some BioThane leashes.
I ordered 2 collars 2 leashes and a longline. I ordered 8’ leashes instead of the standard 6’ because I like to allow my dog a little extra room for sniffing and exploring. So far, I’m really happy with them.
And here’s the best part, if they get wet and dirty you just wipe them off with a wet rag and they’re good to go!
I ordered these from a company called High Tail Hikes (@hightailhikes). If you’re interested in checking them out for yourself here’s a link:
