Training day with Rafi the German Shepherd!

In this session, our team took Rafi to Tractor Supply to work on his reactivity (barking and lunging). First, we sat by the entrance and let him take in the environment. He showed some anxious behaviors—licking, pacing, heavy breathing—but instead of over-comforting, we let him self-soothe. When he finally settled, we reinforced it with a simple “yes, good boy” to mark the calm behavior we want to see more of.

Inside the store, we carefully watched for subtle signs of stress—like when he lifted a paw, signaling discomfort. Standing near people was enough of a challenge; no petting or greetings allowed. He needs to know we’ve got his back and will protect his space. When a passerby triggered some tension, our trainer used a calm “off” command and a light leash correction to redirect him.

Later, we practiced impulse control at a doorway—no darting allowed! He waited for the “okay” before moving on. Another paw lift near a dog? Another “off” to help him relax and reset.

This outing was also a great hands-on learning experience for two of our assistant trainers, guided by one of our head trainers. Reactivity training is about reading the dog, taking things slow, and building trust every step of the way. Great job, Rafi!
