Animal SOS

Animal SOS Animal SOS supports local rescues by helping with vet care and supporting fund raising efforts. We are an all volunteer group.
(47)

We also help senior and disabled citizens keep their pets, including providing low-cost spay/neuter. We provide transportation for seniors and rescues to areas inside the Columbus, Georgia area. Beginning in 2013, we are working with Columbus in their community cat program. We maintain a registry of colonies and their caregivers. This registry allows free roaming cats a chance to be returned and offers the caregivers opportunities for free and low-cost spay/neuters.

**Meet Ragnar: A Story of Survival and the Importance of Vaccination**

Recently, Ragnar and his four littermates were brought to Columbus Animal Control in dire condition—emaciated, lethargic, anemic, and riddled with fleas and intestinal parasites. Tragically, one of the five didn’t make it, but Ragnar was determined to survive.

Ragnar was the most critical of the group, requiring a lifesaving blood transfusion from Banjo, the dog of our dedicated veterinary assistant, Olivia. Thanks to Banjo’s help and the incredible care from our team, Ragnar began his journey to recovery.

Unfortunately, the road to recovery was not so simple. Ragnar, and his siblings soon tested positive for parvovirus, a highly contagious and deadly viral disease in dogs.

We're thrilled to share that all four have since recovered after receiving lifesaving care through Animal SOS and will eventually find their forever home with Paws Humane Society. Ragnar's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of vaccinating our pets against parvovirus, especially as we move through a season where cases are on the rise.

**Parvovirus is preventable with vaccination.** This virus can be deadly, particularly in young puppies, but a simple vaccination can protect your dog from this heartbreaking illness. If your dog hasn’t been vaccinated or you’re unsure about their vaccination status, please reach out to your veterinarian immediately.

Let's keep our furry friends safe and healthy!

Wally Update + GRAPHIC image in comments!

Another surgery in the books for this sweet little dude. His skin was contracting too much as it was healing, which over time would have resulted in restricted motion. His vet consulted with a soft tissue surgeon as well and this surgery was the recommended course of action.

Peep the comments to see what he had done- it’s pretty gnarly 🫣 but all part of his healing process. He deserves the best life and we are determined to get him there!

It’s a not so happy Friday.

2 of the 4 remaining puppies from the CACC litter earlier this week tested positive for parvovirus today. This is the litter we have been working along side Paws Humane Society day in and day out to get safe and healthy. And today they took a horrible turn 😭

These two, Lagertha & Ragnar, are at Macon Road Veterinary Clinic receiving treatment, while the other two are being monitored very closely.

We are once again begging for donations to help these former animal control pups. They are receiving the parvo antibody shot and we will keep everyone updated on their progress.

Animals are suffering in our community every single day. And just when they get picked up, thinking life will improve, they sit at animal control and continue to suffer.

5 puppies came in to CACC on Thursday last week- emaciated, lethargic, anemic, and flea ridden. One is now dead. One just received a blood transfusion and is fighting for his life. The other 3 are on the mend, but definitely not out of the woods yet.

Proper intake protocols could have changed the entire trajectory of these puppies lives. Had they been examined, given flea baths & medication, and dewormed the day they came in, there’s a possibility that none of this would be happening right now.

We are working closely with Paws Humane Society to save these babies and your support is desperately needed. Paws needs fosters and funds for their continued care, and we need help with the $674 vet bill from their hospitalization and the blood transfusion.

All donations are tax deductible to both us and to Paws! Ways to donate to their current vet bill— https://linktr.ee/animalsos

**Shoutout to Uptown Vet for being AWESOME and to Olivia and her dog Banjo for being HEROS! Banjo was the donor for the blood transfusion- so we had to include his pic of course because he’s a LIFE SAVER!

Tuesday- our favorite day of the week because it’s an excuse to show off our resilient babies and their awesome transformations🤩

Just TWO WEEKS AGO Lovely was knocking on deaths doors as she went in for an emergency c-section after sitting at animal control for 5 days, pregnant and suspected to have been hit by a car. Her spirit was broken as her only surviving puppy passed hours after coming into the world.

After a brief vet stay for monitoring, Lovely went to Heather’s house to be fostered, nurtured, loved, and spoiled for 2 weeks. Yesterday, our friends and partners at Paws Humane Society took her into their facility to prepare her for adoption 🥰

Soon, Lovely will be ready to find her forever home. If you’re interested in loving Lovely for many years to come, be sure to keep an eye on Paws’ website to see when she’s adoptable!

We are VERY thankful for the partnership we have with Paws that made it possible for Lovely to get the medical attention she needed while impounded at animal control AND never have to step foot back in animal control. 💜

Sometimes our life saving efforts look a lot different than we would like. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do for an animal is help them cross the rainbow bridge.

That’s what happened with Harley earlier this week when animal control sent out a plea for a dog who was unable to use her back legs, in horrible condition. Her owner had passed away, and as a result she came to animal control.

We rushed her to Uptown Veterinary Clinic where the staff immediately began assessing her. Her body score was a 3. She was a 12 years old. Her back was all sorts of messed up, possibly trauma related. She had rocks in her stomach. Her teeth, ears, and skin were all infected. And the kindest thing we could do for her was help her pain and suffering end.

She was held and loved and told how good of a girl she was for her final moments, and we are thankful we were able to provide her with that.

Today we are asking for your help in covering Harley’s medical bills and the cost of her cremation. The total is around $400. All donations are tax deductible and allow us to help more animals like Harley.

Medical Case Updates 🏥

Again, both the good and the bad…

We will start with the good. Just LOOK at Lovely! She was our CACC medical mama who had to have and emergency c-section and lost her baby. She was discharged from the vet, is loving life in her foster home, AND will be going to Paws Humane Society for adoption very soon. We are beyond thankful for this partnership that allows us to help these med cases without them having to return to CACC!

And now the bad. We lost Corndog over the weekend. Her little body wasn’t able to fight off everything going on. We are heartbroken over this and hurt knowing she will never get to grow up and live the life she deserves, but we know she is at peace now and no longer having to fight with everything in her.

Thank you for your support with each one of our medical cases these past few weeks. It has been overwhelming to say the least but your support helps us get through it🩷 The dog days, the bad days, and everything in between… We won’t stop fighting for these animals.

We already posted about transport but we thought Abbott leaving for Pennsylvania deserved her own post! 124 days after coming to us as a neonate puppy with a nub of a leg— Abbott is finally heading off to find her own family! ❤️

Thank you to every single person who donated to her care, her fosters who cared for her every day and the babysitters who hung out with her in between, her awesome veterinary team at Uptown, our PA friends for loving her from afar until she was able to travel, and so many more! This is our WHY! Happy life sweet girl!

Medical Case Updates 🏥

Wally has LEFT THE BUILDING - the Auburn ER Vet building that is! At a price of $3,595.58!!!! He is back resting in his foster home, still being very carefully monitored as he’s not entirely out of the woods yet. We are just thankful he’s doing well enough to be discharged & thankful for the Northridge Vet team for being ready to jump back in and continue his care. Unfortunately no owner has stepped up for him at this time.

Corndog’s update isn’t quite as positive. She declined a good bit yesterday, her body temp dropped super low, and we weren’t entirely sure she’d make it through the day. It’s literally an hour-by-hour deal with this one, but we know she’s receiving the best care between her veterinary team at Uptown and her foster mama! Dr. Teeples even put this sweater on her yesterday as they were trying to get her temperature back up to a safe range 🥺

(We promised not to beg for donations for a few days, and we will uphold that. So just sharing an update for now! We are brainstorming more fundraisers as it appears these medical cases aren’t slowing down anytime soon 🤯)

**GOAL MET! THANK YOU ALL!**

One more fundraiser post for the week, then we promise to leave you alone for the next few days 🤪

Seriously though, our community’s support has been unmatched lately as we have been trying to help as many medical cases as we are able. We are so appreciative!

We are so excited to be sending off another transport to Pennsylvania where 11 deserving dogs will go on to be with their new families!

We wanted to try something different for this transport! We are asking for 20 people to make a donation of $30 each. When you donate, YOU get to pick a name to go on a bone! This could be in honor of beloved pet, a friend, in memory of someone- you decide! Simply donate $30 through any of the methods below and comment the name you want us to add to the picture! Don’t want to comment the name? Message it to us! Let’s fill these bones with the names of 20 awesome people and pets, and get these 11 babies on the road to their happily ever afters 💚

Two more charges to our CACC Medical Fund today 🫣 Can you help us out with these bills?

Little Corndog was showing signs of parvo while at animal control. Thankfully it is NOT parvo, but rather a severe case of coccidia. He is being isolated and treated at the vet right now. He is a tiny, pitiful little baby and coccidia can be deadly for a dog like him.

Next up we have an eye enucleation for Adam. This is a medical case we took to the vet last week where it was determined his eye would need to be removed for him to have a good qualify of life. That appointment was scheduled and took place today. He will be going to Columbus Purrs N Paws for recovery and to be adopted out!

We have been asking for so much lately, but as you see we have been taking on so many back to back medical cases from animal control that desperately need our help. Any donations are tax deductible and so appreciated- https://linktr.ee/animalsos

Just a little shout out to our girl AC for ALL she does!

She handles our owner support families, manages our spay/neuter program appointments, takes care of our CACC medical cases, deals with fosters & transports to our rescue partners, and so much more. She is truly relentless in making this community a better place for the animals and pet owning families who live here.

We love her tons and want her to know how much she is appreciated. ❤️

Honestly, we are at a loss for words.

This post has been written and deleted at least 5 times because finding the words to explain this situation is SO difficult.

Lovely had to have an emergency c-section and spay today. The vet believes she underwent some sort of trauma that led to the complications she was having- possibly being hit by a car as that’s what CACC mentioned to us when we got her today.

She had one surviving baby inside her, but unfortunately that baby didn’t live more than 2 hours on this side of earth after the surgery. We named her Amanda in honor of the hero who helped her through delivery and loved her hard for the short time she was here.

We are heartbroken that this happened. We are heartboken that Lovely didn’t get help sooner. We are heartbroken that this entire situation could’ve been avoidable by spaying and neutering.

But we are also thankful. We are thankful that Lovely is doing okay from surgery. Were are thankful for the entire team at Macon Road Vet. We are thankful for Julee who was ready to jump in and do whatever was needed for this family. And we are thankful that little Amanda got to experience two hours of love.

If you’re able to help us with Lovely’s vet bill, we would be beyond thankful for that too. Our CACC medical fund is depleting more than it’s bringing in and in order to keep helping these dogs, no matter how heartbreaking it can be, we need your support- https://linktr.ee/animalsos

Another emergency medical case 🤯

Last week this dog came into animal control as a stray, possibly pregnant and likely having been hit by a car. Today one of our staff members was up at the shelter and saw her laying there, bloody discharge and all. She called one of our vet partners to see if they could check her out. Lovely is currently en route to the vet for medical care. Your donations are urgently needed. We have to get this mama out of pain. 😭

Thank you all. Unfortunately Wally’s blood levels dropped again, so rather then transporting him back to Columbus it was decided that the best thing for him would be to stay at Auburn another night and go from there 😞

Late last night Wally had to be rushed to Auburn ER Vet for another blood transfusion. His gums were pale, he was lethargic, and we knew Auburn was his only option for a Sunday night.

Because this was an emergency, after hours visit… The estimate for the hospitalization and blood transfusion that we signed for was $1200… We haven’t received the official bill yet but we are hoping that was the higher side of the estimate and it will actually be a little less than that 🤞🏼. He will be getting discharged in the next few hours to go back to his local vet here in Columbus for continued monitoring.

We desperately need your help with this bill as it was very much not expected 😭

Weems Road Animal Hospital is one of the amazing vet clinics that has partnered with us to make all of these spay/neuters happen each and every month! From their veterinarians, to their techs, to their receptionist, to their kennel staff- we appreciate every single one of them!

And of course they were more than happy to put one of our stickers up on their front door to spread the word about our programs to the community🥰

✨Wally Update + HERO HIGHLIGHT✨

Surgery went well for our new medical case Wally. He underwent a neuter, scrotal ablation, wound cleaning, and tail amputation. He did end up needing a blood transfusion to get through it, but here’s where the hero highlight comes in-

Kassie, one of the employees at Northridge Vet, jumped into action and brought her dog Beau up to the clinic (on her day off) to serve as a life saving blood donor for Wally 🥺 This selfless act on both Kassie and Beau’s part played such a critical role in Wally being able to get through the day. We truly cannot express our gratitude enough!❤️

We will continue to keep everyone updated on Wally’s progress. We ask that you please continue to help us search for his owners. If he has a family that’s missing him, we want to reunite them. Unfortunately he won’t be listed on animal control’s website since we were told he can’t be impounded as a stray, so if owners go up there looking they won’t be able to find out anything 😭 We are relying on the power of social media.

GRAPHIC‼️ URGENT‼️

A local vet clinic called us yesterday afternoon when a citizen found a severely injured stray and rushed him to their clinic. The citizen was frantic, and did what she thought was best. Understandably so! We told the vet clinic that we needed to get him properly impounded through animal control in case an owner is looking for him, and that we would help with his medical bills through our CACC medical fund.

When we called animal control about this stray dog we were told that the citizen who found him is now considered the owner of this dog since she took him to a vet, meaning he could not be impounded as a stray. We went to speak with animal control today to confirm this in person, and again we were told that since the citizen took the dog to the vet for medical care she is now the owner of the dog.

We have NO plan for this dog (we are not an adoption agency and do not commit to animals without a rescue to back us up), but we want to do the right thing which is search for his rightful owners and get him the medical care he very obviously needs. He is staying at the vet under Animal SOS and your donations are needed to help with the costs. More than anything though, we desperately want this post shared around our community in case a family is missing this baby! He is a stray, the woman who brought him to the vet was not his owner, she did not take on ownership of this dog by getting him to the vet. She simply found a hurt animal and took him to a place she knew he could get immediate help.

He is actually having surgery at this very moment. So your thoughts and prayers are much needed for him and the veterinary staff that’s helping him!

‼️CALLING ALL RESCUES‼️

Lola is a CACC medical case that we helped several weeks back with eye surgery and her spay. The next day she tested positive for parvovirus. We agreed to treat her without a plan because sometimes that’s just what have we do 🤦🏻‍♀️ She was hospitalized but has since been released and is doing MUCH better (video in comments). We thought we had a rescue commitment for her pending her recovery but it turns out we do not. Animal SOS does not adopt out dogs, so we desperately need assistance from a rescue to find this pretty girl her forever home. She is in a parvo foster now, likely in the final stages of shedding the virus. So we want her to stay there for another week just to ensure that’s done, then she is ready to be transferred to a rescue! Please let us know if you can help. She is great with dogs and kids. She is around 10 months old and 30 lbs. Super sweet girl! Foster says she is one of the best she’s ever had!
