This is the unfortunate truth of what happens after Christmas in all shelters and rescues. Please reconsider gifting an animal for Christmas. If you insist on getting an animal, please do your research. Not only of the breed and their requirements, but also the veterinarians, the training, pet insurance, food, cleaning/grooming, toys and other necessities. Be honest with yourself.
>Animals are VERY expensive! Are you able to financial support that animal, especially should it need medical treatment? ( #1 reason for surrender here)
>Do you want to be potty training in the cold weather?
>Do you have time to put into behavioral training? ( #3 reason for surrender here)
>Do you want to clean a litter box/cage/tank several times a day?
>Can you commit to daily exercise both mentally and physically?
>Can you commit to 10+ years?
>Do you have a stable living situation? Please be realistic, a lot of rental places don't allow pets as well as it can be hard on an animal to have to constantly relocate ( #2 reason for surrender here).
Animals are a HUGE commitment that unfortunately some take lightly and just dump them when they are no longer cute and little, or they are too much for them to handle because they didn't do their research or put in the work.
**This is the hardest part of the job. Watching people discard their pets like a piece of trash on the side of the road (not all surrenders). These animals come in afraid and shut down. It takes several days-weeks, and a lot of cheese sticks/treats/patients to help these animals feel comfortable around us enough to let their guard down so we can start to learn more about that specific animal and their individual needs. This is where the healing process starts for both of us and makes finding their forever home worth all the tears and heartache. ❤🐾🐶🐈
