I had an amazing weekend at The BUS and Lazy Beach Brewery! Both events were fantastic, and I’m so grateful to everyone who came out to support me. Hi everyone! The Harley and Sergio Dog Training team is here to help you prepare your pups for the summer in Corpus Christi, Texas. The heat can get intense, and with longer days, it’s crucial to keep our dogs safe and healthy. Our team—Sergio, Harley, Teddy, and Fozzie—is dedicated to making sure your dogs are comfortable and protected during the hot months ahead.

☀️ Preventing Heatstroke ☀️

1. Avoid Peak Heat: 🌅 Exercise your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when it's cooler. Running or walking your dog in the middle of a hot day increases the risk of heatstroke.
2. Provide Shade and Water: 🌳💧 Ensure your dog has access to plenty of shade and fresh, cool water when outdoors.
3. Stay Indoors During Peak Heat: 🏠 Keep your dog inside in air conditioning during the hottest parts of the day, especially when humidity is high.
4. Never Leave Your Dog in the Car: 🚗🔥 Do not leave your dog in a car, even for a short period.
5. Special Care for Vulnerable Dogs: 🐶❤️ Take extra precautions if your dog is brachycephalic, elderly, obese, or has a chronic illness.
6. Maintain a Healthy Weight: 🏋️‍♂️ Help your dog stay fit. Obesity increases the risk of heatstroke. Consider switching from processed kibble to a whole food diet.
7. Consult a Vet for Brachycephalic Dogs: 🩺 If your dog has brachycephalic syndrome, consider consulting a board-certified surgeon to explore options to improve their breathing before the heat hits.

🏃‍♂️ Heat Acclimation and Exercise 🏃‍♀️

1. Gradual Heat Exposure: 🔥 Slowly introduce your dogs to higher temperatures and humidity to avoid heat-related problems. Start this process well before any events to prevent sudden changes from cool indoor environments to the hot outdoors.
- 🐾 Tip: Walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler.
- 🐾 Extra Tip: Avoid strenuous exercise on extremely hot days. Opt for early morning or evening walks when the heat is less intense.

💧 Hydration and Cooling ❄️

2. Hydration: 💦 Always make sure your dogs have access to fresh water. Dehydration can quickly become a serious issue in hot weather.
- 🐾 Tip: Carry a portable water bottle with an attached bowl for easy hydration on the go.
- 🐾 Extra Tip: Provide cool, fresh water, perhaps in an insulated dog bowl.

3. Cooling Aids: 🧊 Provide cooling mats, ice packs, wet towels, cooling coats, and collars. Soak cooling products in cool water to keep them cool for up to three days.
- 🐾Extra Tip: Fill a child-size wading pool or a pool designed for dogs with fresh water for your dog to cool off in.

🌡️ Temperature and Ground Safety 🌡️

4. Check Ground Temperatures: 🏖️ Asphalt and sand can get extremely hot in summer. Test it by placing your hand on the surface for five seconds; if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog's paws.
- 🐾 Tip: Consider using booties to protect your dog's paws from hot surfaces.
- 🐾 Extra Tip: Avoid prolonged exposure to hot asphalt or sand to prevent burns.

5. Provide Shade: 🌴 Give your dog a shady spot to rest, like a beach tent or their own outdoor beach pen, and ensure they have plenty of fresh water. Doghouses are not good shelter in the summer as they can trap heat.
- 🐾 Extra Tip: Keep brachycephalic breeds (dogs with short heads and snouts like Bulldogs, Boxers, and Pekingese) indoors with air conditioning as they have difficulty panting efficiently in the heat.

🏥 Health and Safety 🚑

6. Healthy Weight Maintenance: ⚖️ Keeping your dogs at a healthy weight minimizes the risk of heat stress and injuries.
- 🐾 Tip: Use interactive feeders or food puzzles to make mealtime more engaging and promote a healthy weight.

7. Heatstroke Awareness: 🚨 Signs of heatstroke include heavy panting, glazed eyes, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, lack of coordination, profuse salivation, vomiting, a deep red or purple tongue, seizure, and unconsciousness. If your dog shows signs of heatstroke, immediately immerse them in cool water and seek emergency veterinary assistance.

🌳 Outdoor Activities and Wildlife 🦋

8. Supervise Water Activities: 🏊‍♂️ For dock diving, make sure your dogs don’t overexert themselves. Limit the number of jumps and practice safe techniques to prevent injuries.
- 🐾 Tip: Provide your dog with a life jacket for added safety during water activities.
- 🐾Recommendation: Try dock diving with your dogs at K9 Coastal in Aransas Pass, Texas, for a fun and safe experience.

9. Be Aware of Wildlife: 🐍 In many areas, snakes and other wildlife are more active during the summer. Stay vigilant for potential dangers when outdoors.
- 🐾 Tip: Keep your dog on a leash in unfamiliar areas to prevent them from wandering into wildlife habitats.

🏖️ Beach Safety 🌊

10. Provide Shade and Water: 🏝️ Give your dog a shady spot to rest, like a beach tent or their own outdoor beach pen, and ensure they have plenty of fresh water.

11. Sun Protection: ☀️ Dogs, especially those with short hair, white fur, and pink skin, can get sunburned. Limit their sun exposure and apply sunscreen to their ears, nose, and coat before going outside.

12. Check Water Conditions: 🌊 Consult with a lifeguard about water conditions, as dogs are vulnerable to sea lice and jellyfish.

13. Monitor Activity: 🏃‍♂️ Running on sand is strenuous and can cause injuries. A dog that is out of shape can pull a tendon or ligament, and wet sand can blister their paw pads.

14. Avoid Seawater: 🚫💦 Prevent your dog from drinking seawater, as the salt can make them sick.

15. Rinse Off: 🚿 After a day at the beach, rinse your dog to remove salt and minerals that can damage their coat.

16. Know the Rules: 📜 Check local ordinances before heading to the beach. Not all beaches allow dogs, and some have specific time restrictions.
