🌱🐾 Pet owners, before letting your furry friend play outside, make sure you do a little pet-proofing!

👀 Lawns and gardens can be hazardous if they've been fertilized or sprayed with pesticides, or if garden additives have been used. Make sure to choose pet-safe products and keep curious pets from ingesting fertilizers or repellents.

🚫 Also, watch out for toxic plants like lilies, azaleas, sago palms, and tulips. Monitor your pets while outside or transplant these plants to a safer area.👌

🦟 Beware cat owners! Even though cats are atypical hosts for heartworms, they can still cause major health issues.

Within 75 to 90 days after a cat is bitten by an infected mosquito, heartworm larvae can reach the pulmonary arteries, resulting in heartworm-associated respiratory disease (HARD). Signs of HARD include coughing, increased respiratory effort, and vomiting that resemble feline asthma. In some cases, heartworms can mature to adulthood, which can be fatal for cats with smaller hearts.

Providing year-round heartworm prevention is an important part of your pet’s health care plan. If you would like to discuss the various preventives, contact our team at Southern AZ Vet by calling 520-888-3177, so we can determine what protocol would best fit you and your pet’s lifestyle.

If you can’t hold your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. Walk during cooler times and avoid burns. If your pet is limping from a burn, we’re here to help.
