Is your baby nearing mobility? Crawling babies can lead to conflicted dogs. Join us to learn about the 5 types of supervision, management, grumble zones & growl zones, how proximity plays a role in success and much more!!!

Don’t forget to register for our May Dogs & Toddlers webinar! Why attend?
So many families WISH they’d had a better understanding of how their dog expressed their discomfort or anxiety before their baby arrived (this includes when our babies grow into the toddler era!). Dogs communicate differently than humans. Having them as a part of our lives means we need to learn how they communicate and how to best support them as members of a growing family. The great thing is that everyone can increase their knowledge of dog body language and communication.

Congratulations to all the fantastic dogs and handlers who passed their Canine Good Citizen Tests this weekend!
All six teams tackled the challenge of performing the ten test items in a new and potentially very distracting environment: outside on grass surrounded by trees with squirrels and chipmunks and farm animal nearby along with the sounds of the road... and they rocked it!

Pet Works is 19 years old!

In 2005, after 5 years at the Erie County SPCA creating and running the new Behavior and Training Department as well as the TLC humane education program for inner city youth, I went into business for myself. My opportunity to help the community on my own terms.

Pet Works started with daily dog walking as well as pet manners classes and private behavior counseling with a few pre-agility and agility classes mixed in... over the years it has revised itself as a variety of opportunities have arisen and as I've continued my education in many areas of dog training and dog sports. These days I still do pet manners classes and behavior counseling, but agility seems to have taken the front seat. I can't even count the number of dogs I've worked with over the years and it has been an honor!

Pet Works is still a small one-person operation and I like it that way; I am grateful to have so many good friends and colleagues to help this little company serve our community while I still keep everything up close and personal. Not everyone is lucky enough to have found their life's calling, and I feel very blessed that I found mine and live it every day.

What an amazing journey this has been! As I start yet another adventure, I want to thank everyone who has encouraged and supported me over the years, those who have referred me to their friends and family, and those who have trusted me with their dear canine family members. I love every minute of this work and look forward to many more years of helping people and their dogs to build that wonderful bond of love and companionship!

Are your pups too kool for skool? We hope not! We have 3 Introduction to K9 Nose Work classes starting in September. Be there or be square!

All of these classes are 6-week sessions and the cost is $180.

Thursday, September 29 @ 6:15pm - this class will take place at Sit n' Stay Dog Training in Orchard Park

Thursday, September 29 @ 7:30pm - this class will take place at Sit n' Stay Dog Training in Orchard Park

Saturday, September 24 @ 10:00am - this class will take place at Do Over Dog Training in Williamsville (no classes 10/1 or 10/22)

K9 Nose Work® is the fun search and scenting activity for virtually all dogs and people. This easy to learn activity and sport builds confidence and focus in many dogs, and provides a safe way to keep dogs fit and healthy through mental and physical exercise. All dogs will start in Introduction to K9 Nose Work ®. In this class your dog will be encouraged to use his nose to hunt. Dogs will learn to search boxes and various containers scattered throughout a search area. Searches will become more difficult, and they will learn to solve puzzles to get to the source of the odor. Dogs will become more confident in doing this and will have FUN! Handlers learn to read their dog and see what they look like when they've caught odor. This class is excellent for nervous/shy dogs and is also great for dogs that don’t do well in a regular class setting. Please contact your instructor before class if your dog needs extra space. Most dogs are very comfortable searching without the help of their handler by the end of this class. All dogs work alone with their handler and are required to be crated or confined in their vehicle (weather depending).
 Prerequisite: Dog should be comfortable waiting in a crate between turns and should be housetrained

Image description: A brown GSP dog with a collar and lead staring intently behind the camera.

Text reads: Adolescence is a time for patience, not push. The frontal cortex is still developing during adolescence and so a young dog’s ability to control its own behaviour is not yet fully developed. This can be mistaken for naughtiness.

ADVOCATE FOR YOUR DOG! Handlers find themselves in weird positions with the public all the time. And the best advice for how to handle individuals who assume a dog in public is a dog that needs to be pet is to remember that the only responsibility you have is to the dog in your charge. It is okay to set boundaries with strangers and tell them your dog isn't keen on saying hi, to them or their dog (who probably doesn't really want to say "hi" either...) Boundaries are only a problem for people who violate them, the rest of us respect the line you draw with grace!
