Q: Whatâs your favorite way to spend a day off?
A: Relaxing at home, reading on my back deck while the dogs play in the yard or getting out in nature hiking, dirt biking, anything outdoors really.
Q: What type of music are you into?
A: I listen to a lot of country music, alternative music, folk-country, or folk-pop. I do dabble a little bit in most genres though.
Q: Would you say youâre more of an extrovert or an introvert?
A: I consider myself an introvert and like to recharge at home. I feel more comfortable in smaller group outings.
Q: Are you into podcasts or do you only listen to music?
A: I tend to mostly listen to music but will listen to the occasional murder podcast or audio book if it catches my interest.
Q: How do you take your coffee?
A: Black Coffee at all times of the day, even at night.
Q: What's one thing that can instantly make your day better?
A: 1. Free food is always very exciting. 2. A phone call with my family, who mostly all live in Minnesota. 3. Having the opportunity to get outside and enjoy nature.
Q: Do you like going to the movies or prefer watching at home?
A: Prefer watching at home, but occasionally will enjoy a movie in the theatre.
Q: Whatâs the career highlight youâre most proud of?
A: Overall I consider myself still very early on in my career and there are still many things that I am learning. Every time I have a "first" it sticks with me.
Q: How would your 10-year-old self react to what you do now?
A: My 10 year old self would be very excited that we made our dream come true of becoming a Veterinarian.
Q: What energizes you about your career?
A: It's a blessing to witness the human/animal bond each day between every owner and pet that comes in. That bond has many shapes, sizes, and forms. While unfortunately not all cases are success cases, the ones that do come back into the hospital that are improved are more rewarding than I can begin to describe.

Whatâs your favorite way to spend a day off?
I love days spent fly fishing and adventuring with my spouse and our dogs. Even if I don't catch anything, which happens more than you will ever hear me admit, it is still so relaxing to be out in nature.
What type of music are you into?
I tend to listen to rock and country music in the fall and winter. Once spring rolls around I only listen to pop and hip-hop.
Would you say youâre more of an extrovert or an introvert?
Definitely an extrovert!
Are you into podcasts or do you only listen to music?
I love podcasts! Some of my favorites are Who? Weekly, Handsome, and Search Engine.
How do you take your coffee?
In the spring/summer I drink iced coffee with hazelnut creamer. In the colder months I make pour over coffee at home.
What's one thing that can instantly make your day better?
Running into a friend randomly.
Do you like going to the movies or prefer watching at home?
My Basset Hound is not allowed in movie theaters and she can't lay on the couch alone, so I am stuck at home watching movies!
Whatâs the career highlight youâre most proud of?
I am proud of the hard work and long hours I put in during a rotating medical and surgical internship after veterinary school. I learned so much in that one year.
How would your 10-year-old self react to what you do now?
She would say "I knew we could do it!"
What energizes you about your career?
I really enjoy practicing medicine and what energizes me the most is the connections I make with people and their pets. There is nothing more rewarding than helping a sick animal back to health.

Working out, a long hike with my two Goldens, and of course, a nap.

Ambivert leaning heavily towards introvert
Are you into podcasts or do you only listen to music?
I struggle to pay attention to podcasts, so I prefer music.
How do you take your coffee? Black, extra espresso shots encouraged
What's one thing that can instantly make your day better? Coffee, snacks especially sweets
Do you like going to the movies or prefer watching at home?
I prefer watching at home, but when my husband drags me out to the movies, I do enjoy sneaking candy in.
Whatâs the career highlight youâre most proud of?
Becoming the owner of an amazing team
How would your 10-year-old self-react to what you do now?
Sheâd be shocked I succeeded at achieving my childhood dream.
What energizes you about your career?
Besides how adorable my patients are, I love observing the human-animal bond that owners have made with their pets. Itâs very obvious when a pet is like a family member within a few minutes of my introduction.

We are excited to announce that we are gathering donations for the Idaho Humane Society! Each of our locations has a bin for donations (with a list of desired items) and a cash donation box for IHS. Leptospirosis or Lepto. And why do we recommend it?
We strongly recommend this vaccination for your dog as it something that could potentially found everywhere in our area; in town and in rural areas. This illness is prevalent in rodents that can bring it right to your door. So even if your pet only goes outside to the backyard it can still potentially get lepto. Other wildlife are known to carry and spread lepto and with a strong outdoor community we know that a lot of pets are also out in the foothills and wilderness enjoying activities with their owners. All of this provides potential for your pet to be exposed to leptospirosis.
This bacterial disease is spread through the urine and body fluid of the infected animal. That bacteria can then live in the water (particularly stagnant) and soil for weeks to months. During heavy rain lepto can build up in muddy soil and water. Lepto is then contracted when the bacteria comes in contact with skin abrasions or mucuos membranes of animals. And humans, yes, lepto is a zoonotic disease which means it can be transferred to humans as well. A new study has found that cats are now considered resistant to lepto but can carry the disease and be hosts.

We have exciting news! There is a new doctor joining our Ada Vet team!
Dr. Katie Warner was born and raised in Boise and knew from a very young age that she would be a veterinarian when she grew up! After completing a Biomedical Sciences degree at Colorado State University, she went on to earn her veterinary degree from Washington State University in 2017. She also completed a rigorous internship in medical, surgical, and emergency care in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She then returned home to the Treasure Valley to offer compassionate, high-quality veterinary medicine to animals and their families. She is happy to be joining the amazing team at Ada Veterinary Hospital!
Dr. Warner loves making a difference in the lives of the animals she cares for and especially enjoys dentistry, ultrasonography, managing chronic conditions, and senior pet care. In her free time she enjoys fly fishing with her spouse and hiking with their two dogs, Maple (a naughty Basset Hound) and Rhodie (a perfect mutt).
Dr. Warner will be starting with us later in May but we have begun scheduling appointments for her. She will join the other doctors in rotating through both our Boise and Meridian clinics.

One of the questions we get asked frequently is whether or not to continue flea and tick prevention during the winter months. The answer is yes!
We live in an area where the hardy little fleas and ticks are able to survive during the winter months. Ticks can stay active down to 32 degrees! There is a newer variety of ticks in our area that have learned to stay above the snow line in bushes, grasses, etc. Fleas can live in outdoor temperatures down to 33 degrees for several days and indoors year-round. Exposure will continue to happen and it is safest to keep your pet up to date on their prevention.
We carry Bravecto for fleas and ticks, as well as Nexgard and Revolution for cats, at both of our locations. Our online store has more preventative options and will ship right to your door! Sentinel Spectrum is the heart worm prevention we have in house for dogs but it does have a unique quality, it will help stop flea eggs from hatching on your dog (it does not deter adult fleas).
We also have rebates available for our Bravecto and Sentinel Spectrum products and you can bundle them! Please reach out if you have any questions or if you need flea and tick prevention for your pet!

Tip: One of our staff members struggled to find a pre made arrangement/bouquet at the store today that would be considered safe for cats, so we suggest putting together your own! A quick search on Google will give a good idea of which flowers/plants to avoid for those fur babies.

It's officially spring! And the plant world is beginning to sprout so we wanted to touch on something that comes up (especially around this time of year), why antihistamines do not work to control the itching for your dog.
Short answer: dogs and humans are different.
Dogs have signaling proteins called cytokines that are the cause for their skin inflammation and the itchiness. Antihistamines do not control or affect these cytokines and have actually been labeled by the International Committee on Allergic Diseases of Animals âto be of little or no benefit to treat acute flares of canine atopic dermatitis.â If the itchiness for your dog is caused by allergies then using antihistamines (first) will prolong the itch for your pet as they are not being correctly treated and this could worsen their itch and may cause secondary infections.
Skin irritation can be caused by various things and that is why we encourage exams for your pet. This concern is more difficult to diagnose without examining the area and doing a cytology (the study of skin cells using a microscope). You are always welcome to send us photos of the affected area through a text or email if you have a question or concern.
We do recommend consulting with a veterinarian before starting your pet on any medications or treatments.

We would like to recognize the women in the veterinary medicine world today. In honor of International Womenâs Day we would like to give a nod to all of the women in this industry. Many of whom have been pioneers in furthering veterinary medicine and setting groundwork for todayâs research, practices, standards, medicine, and treatment.
And of course, the ladies of Ada Vet. Their dedication, compassion, determination, leadership, strength, and heart help keep our clinics running smoothly and efficiently. Their curiosity helps us explore new areas of care (for patients, clients, and staff), their drive gives them the opportunity to train for new career pathways, their kindness is seen in every aspect of care, and their sense of humor is key to uplifting the team and creating connection.
There are so many amazing women in the veterinary field in our area and we are grateful to work alongside them to bring the best care to the pets of Treasure Valley and beyond.

Our staff meetings always include laughter. Often there are heavy moments in vetmed and we always try to find the uplifting, the positive, the funny, and the surprising in each day. Laughter is one of our core values at Ada Vet and you have probably heard it echo through our clinics.
Another goal we have is to bring our team closer through activities, meetings, trainings, and our team communication board. Being in a medical profession can be tough but it is also so rewarding. By strengthening our team and learning to find moments in every day to laugh or recognize positivity we believe that we can provide the best care to your pet(s) and to you.

Today is World Spay Day! And we would like to share some info on spaying and neutering your pets.
What are some benefits of spaying and neutering your pets?
A female pet will have a stronger change at a healthier life. Females that are not spayed have a higher risk of developing uterine infections, such as a pyometra and mammary cancer.
Spaying your female cats can reduce the heat cycle symptoms such as, yowling and urinating more throughout the home.
There is a good possibility your male dog will act better if he is neutered. Aggressive behaviors, marking their territory, and mounting could very well decline but there is no guarantee.
Financially it will cost less to spay and neuter than care for a litter or pay for potential infections, cancers, or other issues down the road.
When should I spay or neuter my pet?
This is one of the most asked questions we get at our clinics. And for good reason! These procedures can be affected by the breed, projected size of pet, potential heat cycles, and age at the time of procedure. At Ada Vet we prefer to do exams prior to spaying or neutering so that our doctors can give you a recommendation based on your pet specifically. Some spays we do require exams before the spay procedure such as older females (especially large breeds).
Overall, spaying and neutering can help reduce the numbers of pets that do not have a place to call home. We know that everyone has the best of intentions to keep their intact pets secure but accidents do happen. Spaying and neutering can help prevent unwanted litters.

Patient spotlight: This is Willie. He is a 2 year old German Shepherd who LOVES to play fetch and will find the biggest stick (or log) possible for you to throw. He loves adventuring outdoors and will sometimes give loving body slams to his people. Willie is a joy to be around, just make sure youâre committed to throwing that stick before you pick it up. đž

Last week we had two trainers from Positive Pets come to our Meridian clinic to talk to us about dog training, behaviors, and their programs.
This is the second time they have come to speak to us and every time has been very informative. They have a wealth of information and we learned about reading signals from dogs, different dog breed groups and some of their characteristics, a few training tips, and how to approach dogs that may be nervous.
We are committed to bringing the best care to your pets which means we will continue to learn and train from professionals in the veterinary and pet industries. Gentle handling and working with your pet is important to us. Like we have stated in a previous post, we know that the vet clinic can be stressful for your pet. Our goal is to alleviate any of their stress, nervousness, and to gain their trust. If you would like to bring your pet in for a visit to say hi, get some treats, maybe hop on the scale, please let us know! Our receptionists can give you quieter times at the clinic to make the visit more smooth.

While you are planning your Valentine's or Galentine's gifts and celebrations please keep in mind the risks that candy (looking at you, chocolate), decor, drinks, and flowers may pose to your pet.
We know it would be heartwarming to leave out that box of chocolates, a touching card, and a bouquet of flowers that contains lilies for your sweetheart but please be make sure that pets avoid that area. You could possibly leave the card out and create a fun treasure map for your person that will lead them to their gifts.
And if you have children bringing home all the fun candy, cookies, and treats from their school party we recommend having them stash their loot out of reach. You don't need to be worrying about an ill child who ate too much sugar at the party and your pet who also wanted to partake in said sugar. Also, good luck if the ill child scenario does happen. We have heard that snuggles and rest help (this of course goes for pets too).

Winter Wednesday!
What is your favorite winter activity do to with your pet?
This is Rowan and she loves to hike! She has very light blue eyes so the goggles help protect her eyes from the glare of the sun on the snow. She despises them so mom says she only wears them for part of the hike, along with her booties.

What do our fingertips and a cat's nose have in common?
Our feline friends have a nose that has patterns of ridges that are similar to the ridges we have on our fingers. It is a unique pattern specific to them.
Cats have 200 million scent receptors in their nose! They have very few taste receptors so their appetite is stimulated by smell.
They are born with their sense of smell fully intact and ready to go. And their nose color is related to their fur color. If you have a multi-colored cat, their nose could be too!
With noses that are very sensitive to smell it makes sense that cats may have scents they do not like. A few resources listed eucalyptus, peppermint/menthol, citrus, vinegar, coffee, bananas, and chemicals/air fresheners/soaps as smells your cat may not like. So what smells may they like? Well catnip, obviously. And olives (some sources said green olives specifically), certain flowers or plants like honeysuckle, roses, and valerian root.

Today is Change a Pet's Life day!
We know that so many of you have changed your pet's life and we love hearing your stories and about your pet's gotcha day.
There are many pets out there that haven't found a home and we would like to share ways we suggest you can support them; because we know that we can't save them all by bringing them into our own homes.
1. Donate. We have many rescues and a few humane societies that you can donate to here in the Treasure Valley.
2. Volunteer. A lot of these organizations rely on volunteer support and would love to have help cleaning kennels, walking dogs, socializing cats, etc. Participate in fundraisers and events.
3. Raise Awareness. Share social media posts and content for adoptable animals or fundraising to help the rescues they are at. Host a fundraiser or event!
4. Adopt. When you are looking for a new furry family member remember to check out the local rescues and shelters.

According to reports, Sir Isaac Newton was supposedly tired of his cats scratching to get out of his University of Cambridge rooms so he had the school carpenter cut an opening for his mama cat and one for her kittens. We're curious to know if the door has been replaced or if the holes are still there.

Feline Friday!
This sweet little girl hung out with our technicians as she woke up from her spay. A perk to our job is cuddling your sweet pets when they come to see us, especially after a procedure. We want to make sure that they are comfortable and this is a vulnerable time for them. Our technicians stay close and keep a watchful eye until they go home with you.

Here's some fun facts about our canine friends from National Geographic. "Dogs were the first animal domesticated (tamed) by humans, over 20,000 years ago! As they evolved from wolves, their skulls, teeth and paws shrank, and they became more docile and obedient. FUN FACT! Evidence from fossils suggests that five types of dog had evolved by the Bronze Age, around 4500BC. These were mastiffs, wolf-type dogs, dogs similar to greyhounds, pointing dogs and herding dogs.
