I was honored to volunteer as a Trail Vet for the Idaho Sled Dog Challenge last week! The camaraderie among mushers was remarkable to witness in such an extreme sport.

This year’s race had a Polar Vortex bringing tons of snow and rain. Unfortunately, this led to extreme avalanche risks. The teams already had to traverse several avalanches on their journey. At their first checkpoint, the 200 mile race got cancelled but at least most of the 100 mile teams finished before the race was cut short. Despite this the vet teams still got to go strong monitoring dogs throughout the night. I was able to be stationed at the 100 miler finish line which was awesome to see the mix of emotions. The mushers would go down the line praising each of their dogs who seemed like they could have kept running forever.

I’m trying to train my younger dog, Clara, to be a sled dog now! Who says Golden Retrievers can’t do it? –Dr. Maleki

Please be on the lookout for this sweet pet (closer to our Boise location). From the owner, "He's a Siamese Ragdoll with big blue eyes. He was last seen near Nez Pierce and Owyhee, close to the LDG. He's microchipped and has a red collar. He's my emotional support animal so I'm literally freaking out. His name is Bear. I'm out looking for him frantically,." Please let us know if you see Bear, call or text 208-344-5900.

Shout out to all the kiddos that are wrapping up the end of their semesters, the parents who are gearing up for winter break and holiday craziness, to those cleaning, cooking, and baking to get ready for visitors and dinners. Here’s to those who are trying to keep food, drinks, goodies, wrapping supplies, and any other foreign thing away from their pets. We see you! You’re all doing a fantastic job! Our veterans have paved the way for a lot of what we enjoy now. They have stood on the front lines to keep the threat away. They have helped in times of need, aided when disaster struck. Our veterans go and do many things that are not seen in day to day life. And they continue to serve and to guard our freedoms. AVH honors and recognizes them for their service and we thank all of those who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces.

Fall is here which means cooler temps for outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, fall festivals, and trick or treating. This could also outdoor photo sessions and apple picking. All are very fun and you can generally take your furry family member along with you.

While you are out and about with your pet please keep in a mind a few things,
- bundle up if you have a pet that may be more sensitive to colder temps.
- watch out for chocolate, treats, food that may be harmful.
- flea and tick prevention! Did you know that both of these pesky bugs do NOT die off here in the winter?
- toxic mushrooms and plants/flowers that are harmful to pets.
- wildlife encounters
- apple leaves, seeds, and stems are not as digestible and could be a concern for your pet.
- proper identification in the event you get separated.
- be aware of loud noises, crowds, fires or other triggers that could upset your pet.

We hope you have the best fall and we would love for you to share your photos with us to be featured on our social media!
