Are you feeding your dog too often? ⏰🍗⏰🥩⏰🥕🐶

Dogs fed once a day are less likely to be diagnosed with age-related conditions than pooches fed more often, study claims.

In the largest largest study to date of feeding frequency conducted in companion dogs, University of Arizona-led experts analyzed data on 24,238 pet dogs from the US and found:

• Being fed once a day lowered the risk of nine types of canine health problems
• These included cancer, dental issues and either kidney or urinary complications
• Similarly, dogs fed only once daily scored lower on tests of cognitive problems
• But the team said it is too early to advise owners to change their pet's diets

“We view these results as an exciting first step of an ongoing exploration of the impact of diet on companion dogs living in human environments. Given the intense interest in, and popularization of, ‘longevity diets’ such as intermittent fasting and time-restricted feeding, these types of studies in dogs are both timely and important. We believe these studies will ultimately offer insights into factors that promote health and longevity for both dogs and humans.” - The Dog Aging Project

The scientists and researchers we interviewed for The Forever Dog book agreed that one meal a day for healthy dogs is ideal, in terms of maximizing autophagy and minimizing metabolic stress.

To learn how to transition your pup to a new eating schedule and create an eating window (which allows your pup to receive the benefits of intermittent fasting while offering the same amount of food) check out the section in our book “Personalized Meals as Medicine” found here: www.foreverdog.com

What's The Best Type of Yogurt🥛 to Feed Your Pet?🐾

Whether your dog has just finished a round of antibiotics💊, or you're looking to help combat diseases like allergies, digestive problems, obesity, diabetes, or liver disease, the consumption of fermented foods with probiotic properties, such as kefir, stands out due to its gut microbiota-modulating capacity and can be useful in the management of diseases like these.

Yogurt and kefir🥛 are both fermented foods, but according to the most recent veterinary science, Kefir, hands down, contains more beneficial bacteria. The study found dogs🐶 that were fed Kefir had a healthier gut within 2 weeks, and concluded Kefir may be used as a probiotic food supplement to improve a dog's quality of life!

Adding 1 tablespoon🥄 per 10 pounds of body weight of plain kefir to your dog's food is a great way to boost gut health, and is just one of our many suggestions in the "Mending the Microbiome🦠" section of our upcoming book called The Forever Dog!

Ever seen someone use a laser pointer to play with their dog? Many owners think it’s funny to watch their dog chase that little red dot of light, and they think it’s a bonus to burn off some of their dog’s energy.

Unfortunately, a game of laser pointer chase can be very frustrating for a dog and can lead to behavioral problems.

The movement of a laser pointer triggers a dog’s prey drive, which means they want to chase it. It’s an unending game with no closure for the dog since they can’t ever catch that beam of light, like they can when chasing a toy or food.

Many dogs continue looking for the light beam after the laser pointer has been put away; this is confusing for your dog because the prey has simply disappeared. This can create obsessive compulsive behaviors like frantically looking around for the light, staring at the last location they saw the light, and becoming reactive to flashes of light (such as your watch face catching the sunlight and reflecting on the wall, or the glare of your tablet screen on the floor). Dogs that exhibit behavioral issues are frustrated, confused, and anxious.

If your dog loves to chase but you don’t always have the energy to run around with a toy, try a flirt pole. A flirt pole is like a fishing rod; it is comprised of a rigid stick section with a string or rope attached to the end. Commercially made flirt poles are sold by pet supply stores, but horse lunge whips also work well.

You can tie a toy to the end of the rope and drag it around for your dog to chase and tug with once he’s caught it. The advantage of the rigid section is that you can fling the toy around without having to move much yourself. You can even sit in your recliner!

If your dog loves to chase a toy on a flirt pole, then give your dog the ultimate chance to exercise their prey drive at an AKC Coursing Ability Test (CAT)!

This sport involves dogs chasing a “lure” – usually a white trash bag – attached to line set up around a field and controlled by a pulley system that moves the bag around the field. Dogs give chase and have a great time.

It's already starting in our neighborhood, and Freedom and Fawn are already suffering...

From S.L. Prewitt, Dog Psychology Expert:

"The biochemical response releases a flood of stress, fear and anxiety hormones: testosterone, adrenaline and cortisol.

The surge of this cocktail of hormones increases blood pressure, heart and respiratory rates, triggering one or a combination of the following behaviors: flight, fight, freeze or submit. In all cases the animal experiences traumatic stress injury to the neurology of the brain and central nervous system, resulting in the following:

Flight: desperately trying to flee the noise source
Fight: standing ground and barking towards the noise
Freeze: going into shock and unable to move
Submit: collapsing to the ground

In extreme cases some animals may suffer seizures or heart attacks. The specific behavioral response depends on a combination of the individual animal’s genetics, environmental influences and life experience, but all suffer traumatic stress injury.

Some people claim that their animal does not show any of these signs. They are mistaken and those individual animals are simply internalizing the stress, which can have devastating effects on their physiology and psychology in the form of physical disease and post traumatic stress disorders. These effects are compounded with each subsequent firework event.

There is a need to educate people about the devastating effects of fireworks, including injury, suffering and death.

The intention is not to stop firework enthusiasts from having fun. The intention is to inform people of the unnecessary suffering, injury and death, so that we can make more humane choices in the way we celebrate.
