Baby season is coming up fast! Do you know what to do if you find a baby parrot out of the nest?

First things first: contact us! As the only wild parrot rehabilitation center in Southern California, we are equipped to assess all wild parrot situations and provide you the appropriate advice. Our parrot emergency hotline number is 855-737-4953.

It is important to remember that not all young wildlife is in need of assistance. Once juvenile birds are feathered and mobile, they may leave the nest before they are flighted. These youngsters often spend time on the ground and in low branches and shrubbery, building up flight strength and being closely supervised by their parents. Whenever possible, try to spend some time observing the situation and keeping an eye out for any adults in the area.

However, a nestling bird out of the nest (not yet feathered, limited mobility, vocalizing regularly) definitely needs intervention! In these situations, please contain the parrot in a small container with a rag or towel in the bottom, and keep it in a warm, dark, and quiet location. Do NOT provide them any food or water, as it is incredibly easy to aspirate baby birds and cause them respiratory or digestive distress! It is essential to limit stress and human contact. In some cases, it may be an option to successfully reunite the baby with their parents. Always reach out to SCP's emergency hotline so we can decide the best course of action for any parrots in need.

Two days ago Parrots First lost it's co founder. He was also the love of my life for the 45 years we were married. Frank was the encouragement behind starting Parrots First and my partner. He cared for every bird that came to us. He will be missed more than I can even say.
Parrots were lucky to have you Frank and so was I.

LOLA DIED TODAY

Lola was a breeder for many years. She was given to a man when she was no longer producing babies. He cared about her but did not have a clue as to how to keep a macaw. She was in an apartment in a corner with barriers around her so she would not chew anything in the apartment. He realized that she needed more and contacted Parrots First. Lola is very shy and had pulled out most of her feathers before coming to us.

Lola was placed with other macaws and selected a mate. They were inseparable for 4 years. They spent their days grooming and climbing around. Lola learned the name she was given as she had never had a name before.

We are deeply saddened over the loss but take comfort in knowing her final years were happy.

This is why Parrots First does what it does.

Parrots First

All parrots from the smallest parakeet to the largest macaw are wild animals and belong in the wild.

It is next to impossible to give them the life they deserve in our homes.

We must, however, face reality. The reality is that there are thousands of parrots that have been bred in captivity and can not be released to live on their own. We must focus on giving these birds the best possible life.

Parrots First hopes to accomplish this by rescuing and if needed rehabbing the birds that come in to care and rehoming them to people that have been educated and are fully dedicated to giving them the best life they can.
