POE, OUR FIVE-YEAR-OLD MIRACLE BOY FOSTERED IN RYE, NEW YORK, IS READY FOR ADOPTION

Sweet Poe experienced unthinkable horrors early in life. After ingesting ma*****na in summer and suffering from nasal bullet fragments in fall, Poe’s health was affected, and he was miserable. His owner sought a better and safer life for him and reached out to BFCACT for costly medical care and rehoming. Thanks to the generosity of the Bichon Community, he had necessary surgery and is now healthy and ready to find a safe and loving home.

Our amazing first-time fosters believe Poe will do well in any home with abundant love, time and affection to share. Poe gets along fine with his foster dog and cat siblings and with visitors to the home. He is a great watch dog. In fact, he warns his fosters of impending danger whenever a doorbell rings, whether it is their doorbell or one he hears on TV. He loves cuddles and will lay beside his Foster Mom during quiet time. Are nice long walks on his daily “must do” list? You bet! Poe is a “meet first and ask questions later” pup and is quick to say “hi” first to any other passing dog. Poe will also try to eat anything on the ground that he finds interesting such as a pinecone or garbage, so the adopter needs to be attentive to potential dangers and avoid them or limit his leash’s length. He is housetrained and as sweet as sugar at the groomer. Occasional car rides are fun adventures for him. And, at the end of a busy day, he loves to sleep in the Foster Mom’s bed.

He would do well in either a one-or-two-person house or apartment or in a larger family with children old enough to respect his boundaries. If there is a fenced-in yard, he should remain on a leash with his person, who can make sure he doesn’t pick up anything harmful to him. The primary requirement for a new family is the ability to give him the abundant amounts of time, physical activity, love and attention he thrives on.

If you are interested in adopting this adorable, active boy, please complete an application to adopt at https://www.bichonrescue.org/adoption-form.

OUR ADORABLE PUPPY YUKI HAS BEEN ADOPTED!

We are thrilled to report that Yuki went home to his new family on Sunday. This lively and loving pup immediately made himself comfortable and started playing and kissing his new canine brother, five-year-old Bichpoo Brady. He then delighted in greeting the young family members and entertaining them with one of his happy puppy games. We can’t be more pleased for Yuki and his new family. Enjoy all the special moments as you begin to share your hearts and home with this special boy!

OUR MIRACLE GIRL BLACKBERRY IS HOME!

We want to share some happy news with you. Blackberry (now Stevie) came to us from a Maryland shelter last October. We knew she had an upper respiratory virus, but soon after she was placed with an amazing first-time BFCACT foster, we learned that she also had severe pneumonia. While emergency room veterinarians were uncertain they could save her, through their yeoman efforts, her Foster Mom’s devotion and attention, BFCACT’s commitment, and the Bichon Community’s generosity, Stevie slowly recovered. She recently had a successful dental and was ready for adoption!
After months of Stevie’s health challenges and all the Foster Mom’s loving care, an extraordinary bond developed between them, and we were not surprised to learn that they decided to make their relationship permanent. Stevie’s new best friend is her Mom’s rescue cat, Scout. They get along great and love to cuddle. (Exception: Stevie is not above stealing Scout’s food, but nobody is perfect.) According to her new Mom, Stevie has her “groove back,” loves her walks, cuddles with Scout and enjoys her granddog Dixie. She tell us: “We were meant to be together. I'm so grateful that she has come into my life.”

We are too, Mom, we are too.

NOTE FROM BFCACT: It is only through the support of our donors that we can continue saving pups like Blackberry/Stevie and making miracles happen. We are deeply grateful for your generous support and healing thoughts for Stevie when she needed it the most.

MEET DEXTER, AN 18-MONTH-OLD BOY IN DENTON, TEXAS (which is 40 miles northwest of Dallas)

Dexter is a loving, curious, active, adorable 18-month-old, 13.6 pound boy who is looking for his forever home! Sadly, he has already lost two families in his short life. His first family gave him up because they had to leave him crated more than they wanted. His second family, a senior couple, came to understand that, although they loved him dearly, they were not able to give such a young dog the attention, stimulation, and care he needed.

The good news is this boy has been loved and knows how to love in turn - he wants to befriend every person he meets and will run up to them with a wagging tail and a "please pet me!" look in his eyes. This boy loves head pats and is a master of the Bichon head tilt! He gets along great with dogs, cats and children. We think he would be happiest in a home with another active young dog. We also believe he would love some older children to play with to burn off his abundant puppy energy. Dexter can be a little mouthy during playtime, but he can easily be redirected to a toy and does not try to harm anyone.

This smart boy is house trained, although he has occasional accidents when he is left alone or he gets excited. Dexter also knows basic commands. He needs someone who can train him not to run out the front door when he sees something exciting going on outside. Also, while he has done fine in his foster family's townhome, we can tell that he would be happiest with a yard to run around in. Dexter does suffer from separation anxiety, so he either needs someone home with him most of the time or a family that can help him overcome this anxiety. Can you give Dexter the active home and lifelong love he needs? If so, please complete an application to adopt at https://www.bichonrescue.org/adoption-form.

UPDATE: OSCAR'S ADOPTION IS PENDING. Thanks to all of you who applied to adopt him!

OSCAR, A PRECIOUS 14-MONTH-OLD BOY, IS LOOKING FOR A HOME TO CALL HIS OWN. HE IS IN ATLANTA, GEORGIA.

This cuter-than-cute young boy is a happy, active, curious, sweet Bichon mix who is ready for his forever home. Oscar likes nothing better than playing chase with other small dogs and must be placed in a home with one or two other active pups. He enjoys nice long walks to burn off his young-dog energy and to explore the world around him. Because he is very smart, we know he will continue making great progress with his housetraining. Oscar has been fully vetted and was neutered this week. At his young age, he needs lots of exercise, stimulation, and pampering from an adoring family. A fenced-in yard is also preferred. If you are interested in sharing your heart and home with Oscar, please complete an application to adopt at https://www.bichonrescue.org/adoption-form.

YUKI, A 14-WEEK-OLD BOY BEING FOSTERED IN BRISTOL, RHODE ISLAND, IS READY FOR ADOPTION!

Color this six-pound bundle of joy absolutely adorable. Yuki was turned into BFCACT when the owners decided a puppy was not for them. He is all puppy – happy, mischievous, curious and social. He adores people and loves playing with children and other friendly dogs. Much to the delight of his fosters, he has already mastered the fine art of the Bichon Blitz. Even at his very young age, Yuki is making good progress in housetraining and is ringing bells when he has to go outside. He is starting to learn basic commands and has already nailed “sit”. Good boy! We are looking for a family who will enjoy the adventures of this puppy and help him make the
transition to a well-behaved, much-loved family member as he grows. His new family should have another small, active dog for Yuki to play with and a fenced-in yard is preferred. Applications are being accepted at https://www.bichonrescue.org/adoption-form.

OUR LITTLE MILO IN VIRGINIA HAS FOUND A WONDERFUL HOME FOR THE NEW YEAR!

Milo is a beautiful three-year-old Bichon mix. Back in October, we heard from a lady who was going through a divorce and found that she was no longer able to support Milo or give him the time and attention he craved. He was spending much of the day alone. Fortunately she contacted us for help. After stealing the hearts of his amazing BFCACT first-time fosters and getting the veterinary care he needed, Milo has been adopted by a family where he will no longer be alone - ever. Mom and Dad are home much of the time, three children adore him and a gentle, four-year-old Great Dane is available to play 24x7. We understand they live near a golf-course-turned-hiking-trail, where he can burn off extra young-dog energy. Happy trails and happy life, sweet Milo!

MEET LUNA, A SWEET GIRL IN ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FLORIDA, WHO NEEDS A NEW FAMILY FOR THE NEW YEAR

Luna, a perfectly wonderful mature gal, showed up in a Florida “kill shelter” right before Christmas. We don’t even want to think about how or why she got there right before the holidays, but thankfully one of our volunteers saw a post about her and immediately took action. A compassionate BFCACT foster took her in and started giving her just what she needed: a loving home, nutritious food and all the comfy blankets she wanted. It turns out that despite the tough times she must have endured, she is one happy, lively, loving girl and lapdog extraordinaire. Based on her activity and energy level, we guess she is about 12 years old. She is spayed and weighed in at slightly more than 13 pounds. Luna does have a heart murmur and dental disease not unusual for pups her age, but after a thorough examination and comprehensive bloodwork, her veterinarian gave her a glowing report. We are looking for an adopter who fully understands how rewarding it can be to share life with a mature canine companion. The benefits of the unconditional love, gratitude and devoted companionship are beyond description. If you would like to open your home to this amazing little girl in 2025, please complete our application to adopt at https://www.bichonrescue.org/adoption-form. She is being fostered in Altamonte Springs, Florida, which is just north of Orlando in Central Florida.

UPDATE - BONDED PAIR LUC AND BEAU IN COLORADO HAVE BEEN ADOPTED

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus and, yes, adopting bonded pairs is an amazing way to bring two additional lovebugs into the home and give them a second chance in life. It doesn’t get any better than this! Several months ago, Old Dogs New Digs (ODND) rescue in Colorado asked BFCACT to help them find Bichons Luc and Beau a new home, and we are thrilled to announce the pups are now living the good life with their new family. The adopters have many years of experience with Bichons and are definitely a perfect match for them. Special thanks to ODND and their compassionate foster for their dedication to the pair. And to Luc, Beau, their new pawparents and Bichon sibling, we wish you a Happy 2025 and many years of making sweet memories together.

JOURNEE AND HARMONY HAVE BEEN ADOPTED – THE JOYS OF ADOPTING A BONDED PAIR

Journee and Harmony, our eight- and nine-year-old bonded girls in Michigan, were turned into our Rescue when their Mom lost her home and could no longer care for them. Their BFCACT Foster Mom affectionately called them her “chill little nuggets” and enjoyed their delightful playfulness and super cuddling. After they were fully vetted and treated, we hoped that someone would quickly step up to adopt them.

Unfortunately, not everyone is willing to adopt bonded pairs. They worry about any extra work and expense it may take to keep them happy and healthy. We see it differently. Bonded pairs can actually be easier. They rely on each other for companionship and playtime. They generally suffer less from separation anxiety because their “buddy” is always there for emotional support. And their transition to a new home can be smoother because they have each other to lean on. And some studies show that bonded animals live longer and healthier lives.

Journee and Harmony’s savvy new pawparents knew all this. As former BFCACT adopters, they rescued a number of older Bichons over the years and were thrilled to learn that this pair was available. Several weeks ago, “Dad” hopped on a plane in Texas heading to Michigan to meet them and quickly fell in love. Soon they were swept away to their new home, where they are loving life big time. As we expected they made the transition easily and their new Bichon brother Desi (a BFCACT alum) is showing them the ropes. They enjoyed their stress-free mobile groom and are quick to show everyone just how pretty they are. The highlight of their day, long walks to the park, gives them a chance to strut their stuff and greet both humans and other canines along the way. Please join us in thanking these special “angel” adopters and wishing Journee and Harmony a life of comfort and love in their new home in the Lone Star State.

ONE OF THE MANY HEARTBREAKS OF BICHON RESCUE

While many of our rescues are pulled from animal shelters and surrendered by senior owners who can no longer care for their beloved Bichon companions, we are occasionally confronted by harsh realities of life for some Bichons. Poe’s story is one we want to share with you.

Poe is a five-year-old beautiful and sweet Bichon who lived with his Mom after a divorce. Back in July, his concerned owner took him to an animal ER after the pup consumed ma*****na. Poe was one sick boy but fortunately the vet was able to stabilize him and he seemed to recover over time. Fast forward to November. Once again Poe’s owner took him to the ER when she believed Poe had inhaled pellets from a BB gun. He was in terrible pain and was showing signs of severe depression and anxiety. In other words, this boy was miserable. The veterinarian did everything she could to dislodge the foreign material from his sinus cavities and gums but was unsuccessful – and Poe continued to suffer. The owner realized she could no longer provide him with either necessary medical care or a safe home environment and asked BFCACT to take him into rescue, address his urgent medical needs and find him a new home. We were fortunate to find an experienced and compassionate foster nearby who took him to nasal specialists and surgeons in a highly regarded veterinary school. BFCACT sponsored extensive testing and subsequent surgery. The veterinarians determined that the foreign bodies lodged in Poe’s nose were actually bullet fragments. They also found a small hole in his upper palate which led to the damaged nasal passages.

Our hearts broke for what this poor boy endured, but we are now rejoicing that he is safe and recovering well from his surgery. The vets tell us that the damage caused by the bullet fragments will not affect his quality of life except for a slight chronic discharge. He will be ready for adoption soon.

It is only through the support of the Bichon Community that we are able to help our rescued dogs in need like Poe. The costs of his surgery, medications and hospital care have already exceeded $5,000 and continue to climb as he recovers. As you consider your year-end giving options, please know that any donations made to BFCACT to help defray his expenses would be deeply appreciated. Our donation link is: https://www.bichonrescue.org/donate Thank you.
