It's WishList Wednesday and now it's Diamond's turn! Diamond has been here a few months now. After spending her whole life in solitude. She has made friends and she is the best girl.
She could use a few things this month. We are completely out of the fly spray we use to keep the flies away from the cows and horses. She needs a new brush, dewormer and fly mask. AND Ripley just broke her feed bucket this week, so she could use a replacement of those so they don't have to take turns to eat. All the items she needs is on her own special Wishlist. If you would like to send something special to Diamond, her list is in the comments and she would be happy to send you a very special sloppy kiss! She gives the best ones (next to Diesel).
Even hurting and running a slight fever, Diesel enjoyed his ride. He got a shot of antibiotics to help clear this up faster and some super dooper ear meds. I know an ear infection doesn’t sound like much but with any of these rescue babies, they are so immune compromised that a small infection can turn into a big infection really really fast so we don’t waste any time. The final bill was $122 so we’re still trying to raise the funds to cover the bill. If you can help with Diesel’s bill he sure appreciates it!
Why do we have to be outside….
It’s $2Tuesday!! Rosita, Raven, Peanut and LuLu need a restock of their feed and mineral. $2 will feed one of them one meal. $18 buys one bag of feed for all. $22 buys a bag of mineral Let’s get these guys some fresh food!

What a memory--the 4 cutest butts in Tennessee.
If you don't know where we started....here is a little history.....it all began with these 2. When you begin in animal rescue, any rescuer will tell you--you don't know anything yet. You learn as you go. You have to let your heart lead you, you jump off that cliff and build your wings on the way down. At a slaughter auction, we saw hundreds of animals in need of rescue. We left broken hearted that we could only take 2. Bruno was the 1st to catch our eye--in a pen with other bulls bigger than him, he was so puny and sickly, runny nose, eye infection, scared out of his mind. He looked at me and that's all I remember. Lucille--in the pen next to his, a pen so full she could barely move, her entire face covered in p**p. Both of them starving and thirsty and sickly. We didn't know their breeds or genders or anything else. We just knew they had to come home with us.
And it took all our energy and resources and multiple vet visits to save their lives. Bruno, especially, suffered from a bad case of pneumonia, and every time he turned the corner, he would get sick again. It took 3 months and several rounds of antibiotics to get him well. Lucille faired better, but due to her compromised immune system, she still suffers from a common cold or mild pneumonia with each change in season and we have to really watch her.
Once they were well, their personalities came shining through. And they were so happy to have us and each other.
As many of you know, we lost Bruno 4 years later to congenital ortho issues that prevented him from being able to walk in his last days. Lucille, always his friend, still grieves for her beloved Bruno, as do I. She enjoys the others' company, but like many siblings or mates, you grieve harder for the one who knew you the longest and the best.
We have so much work to do at Xanadu, but on difficult days or when donations are so far down we can't move forward, or when the work becomes overwhelming, it helps to go back and remember where it all started and why. Many will argue whether animals are here on this earth for us to use for our own purposes or not. From my point of view, that doesn't even matter--there is ZERO cause for them to suffer illness and abuse and live lives never intended for animals to live. There is ZERO use for Factory farming and brutal containment. There is ZERO excuse for abuse and starvation of any living being. It's time it all stops. And until then, we will be here doing what we can--saving them all, one at a time. Til there are no more to save.
A HUGE thank you for the donations this week. What an amazing surprise and the goats, sheep, cows, pig, horses and our volunteers will be so happy. Granola bars and Gatorade for everyone!
I'm sorry, my friend.
I didn't know you. But I know you deserved so much more than you were given during your time on earth.
I know that you tried your hardest to please your humans. They said they loved you and called you a good girl, because you could run like the wind.
You made them smile and cheer and shout, they would throw their arms up in the air time and time again as you kept doing what they told you to do since the tender age of two, years before your body was ready. You kept running, you kept winning...
.. for them.
Your strength and your stamina and your talent won them more than $8 million in gambling money. After all that running you must have been so tired, and they said it was time for you to stop running, to slow down... to 'retire'. But there was no slowing down for you, your body was still 'worth' something... more, perhaps, than any race winnings. You were a broodmare now, and the race to the finish line was replaced with the relentless exhaustion of forced impregnation. You were kept almost constantly pregnant — nine births in only ten years. Nine beautiful foals that you grew inside you, you worked so hard to bring into the world. Nine of your babies, taken from you to supply the gambling machine. All of them now being raced, or used for breeding... or dead.
It was during your ninth pregnancy you developed mastitis — a condition affecting breastfeeding mums — which later became an extremely painful infection, laminitis. Shortly after you brought your ninth foal into the world, you were euthanised.
You must have been so, so tired.
Black Caviar you were so beautiful. You will always be so beautiful. And I hope the humans remember you the way you deserve to be remembered — as someone.
I'm sorry you had to join me in the stars to finally find the peace I'm sure you longed for. Two of your babies are up here too, they've been waiting for their mum to come home.
You are safe now, time to rest. 💙
Happy National Radio Day!
It’s $2Tuesday! We have 5 days to raise the funds needed for our hay delivery. $2 will feed our sweet girl Lucille here 1 meal of hay. Who wants to cover her breakfast?
Speck, and his very red lips, say thank you so much for the extra watermelons! Everyone enjoyed them this weekend!
Kenny Rogers Farming…. You picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel.
A huge thank you for the donated bean bags for Cooper. Mushka is helping herself too even though she prefers the floor next to an air vent. She didn’t want to be left out. A million thanks!

Ella Grace is recovering well. Taking her medicine every day like a champ. She’s acting more and more like her old self. She will be able to go back to the pasture with her horsey friends tomorrow afternoon. Thanks to everyone who has been thinking of her and praying for her. #horserescue
Everyone was so happy to see Ella Grace come back home. The dogs serenaded her all the way down the driveway, and the horses are ready for her to be back with them. She feels pretty good so far, but as she eats we’ll have to be extra mindful of infection. Enjoy the animal talk on this video!
Mollie (and all her friends) are really enjoying the watermelon on these hot days. We're hoping to be able to go pick up another stash at a discounted price by next week. #mollie #loves #watermelon #goats #goatstagram #animalrescue #animalsanctuary #goatrescue
Watermelon party commences!! We were able to pick up 15 watermelons for this week and will get 15 more next week to help keep the animals cool and hydrated through these 100° days. Thanks to all who donated! We’ll run more watermelon fundraisers throughout the summer.
So what do we do at the very end of a long hard day? We play bubbles! It’s hard to believe that just 7 months ago Diesel was skin and bones after being abandoned by his owner, locked up without food/water for weeks. But look at him now! It’s clear that he’s fully recovered and living his best life ever. THIS IS RESCUE! THIS IS LOVE! 💕
Whew--what a weekend! We have just completed haying our open fields to feed the Xanadu rescues. While this will ultimately save us quite a bit on hay expense, we are still coming up short in paying our fantastic Hay man for moving all his equipment up our hill and all the work he did to grab us every ounce we could get out of these fields. We need to raise an additional $350. Can you help us? Shyner, Wiley, Ella Grace, Diamond, Woody, Peanut, Mollie, Rosita--and all their farm friends depend on hay as their primary food source. $5.50 buys the service for 3 bales of hay! Can you send us $5.5?
