Weeks ago a rescue contact shared this disturbing case w/ me, of 7 young dogs having been abandoned at a vet clinic, and 'growing up' in cages, let out by staff several times a day (good the clinic kept them, but still, that's no home for a pet!). I had said, "I'll try to assist once my foster dog-Twix-is adopted." -Twix was adopted (and returned as you all know), but while Twix 'was' adopted, we secured a foster home for one of these 7 abandoned dogs... and she's so sweet and doing GREAT in foster care. FOSTER FACTS:
1.) Fostering is a lot of work, no matter what.
2.) Foster dogs learn so much so fast 💨.
3.) Foster dogs bond and think they’re ‘home,’ even though you keep them ‘at arm’s length.’
4.) Although without loving fosters foster dogs remain in cages where they’re likely not learning, bonding, or inching closer to finding a home of their own… so yes, it’s worth it!

-2+ months in Miami Dade Animal Services living in a cage (excellent shelter but it’s not a home)
-Entered the shelter in Sept, badly injured, having been hit by a car
-Contracted URI while at MDAS, and was in treatment isolation for 13 days
-10 days ago was spayed and had her injured leg amputated
-Adopter backed out on her yesterday at the shelter…

~Seeing this sweet, young dog recovering from a major leg amputation in a cage, on the adoption floor… youch! 🐵
-Took her out for a potty break, was thinking of pulling her as our 1st MIA foster, and as we were going back into the shelter, a nice family stopped us, loved her, and was waiting in line to (hopefully) adopt her as I left! 🤞🐾💫

and 4 years later she remains thriving in her forever home in Winchester, Ky.

-Lilly has always been quite feral and won’t allow people to touch her. She also won’t go indoors. About Me:
The idea of creating The Paw and Feather Plan came to me circa 2013. Then I was working at Miami Dade Animal Services as an Adoption and Foster Care Counselor. During my tenure at MDAS it wasn’t uncommon to see pets surrendered by loved ones of their deceased owners.
So I thought, people need to include pets in their wills. And they need to have someone safe, trustworthy and reliable to take over pet care at a moment’s notice.
As a pet foster parent with more than a decade of experience and an active pet sitter, I’m confident in my ability to provide outstanding care for others’ pets.
I’m adept at placing pets in permanent, loving, vetted homes too.
I feel called to do this work.
Lastly, having feather as part of The Paw and Feather Plan is necessary since: I’m a bird lover and bird owner. I know how special and smart birds are as pets. And since large birds typically outlive their owners, this service is even more crucial for bird owners.
Aside from offering The Cat Plan, Dog Plan and Bird Plan (plans for pets willed to The Paw and Feather Plan), I assist in pet re-homing for those experiencing extreme life events.
Of course we counsel and encourage pet owners to KEEP their pets and CONNECT THEM WITH THE RESOURCES TO DO SO however, sometimes people are decided on getting rid of their pets and there’s nothing anyone can say or do to change their minds.
And sometimes the pets truly are better off being placed in a new, loving home... depending on a wide array of circumstances and living conditions. Some people are not mentally, emotionally, financially and/or physically capable of providing a good home for a pet. In these cases, we help re-home peoples’ pets. It’s bittersweet. It’s sad. But it’s also a ‘silver lining’ during a very difficult time in a person and his or her pet’s life.
Lastly, I make an effort to stay in touch with my adopters and they appreciate it. Oftentimes they need some encouragement or advice along the way- that’s normal. Taking in a new pet is huge transition and responsibility.
