Dr. Herman (left) and Dr. McIntyre (right) posing with relief following a complicated foreign body obstruction procedure on a canine patient that ingested a large amount of fabric!
The material was removed from the patients stomach and weighed a whole pound!🤯
The patient was kept for two nights following surgery and is going home today thanks to the efforts of our amazing doctors, our dedicated nursing team, and our incredible support staff.🐾

Their chances of survival greatly decrease when removed from their environment, so take great care to follow proper steps to ensure they are reunited with their families to be able to thrive🐾💕

🚨WARNING: Images may be upsetting for some viewers🚨

This little fawn was brought to VCAH today after being hit by a car.
Our team jumped right in to help this creature in need. 💗

The fawn was sedated, radiographed, and discovered to have a broken back leg and multiple lacerations.
His wounds were carefully closed and his leg stabilized via splint and bandage. He is now resting comfortably.
The next step in this long road ahead, is transfer to a colleague/wildlife rehabilitator to repair the broken leg.

We’d like to thank Dr. Maidhof for patching up his wounds, our LVT Manager, Jen B, for placing a specialized jugular catheter and taking great care to get him stabilized, LVT Sam for wrapping and splinting the broken leg, Assistant Manager Sam for lending an extra set of hands, and last but not least, the thoughtful Good Samaritan who transported this sad babe to our care.

We are wishing this sweet boy the absolute best and a swift recovery. 🐾

With summer festivities kicking off, we want to remind you about the symptoms of heatstroke and prevention tips:

-Never leave your pet unattended in a car
-When hot/humid, keep your pet’s time outdoors limited
-Keep your pet hydrated
-Ensure your pet has ventilation and a cool environment
-Dogs with short noses are at higher risk due to their condensed facial anatomy and restricted ability to cool themselves
-If any signs of heat stroke appear, contact our team immediately.

-Keep alcohol and table scraps away from your pet
-Never leave your pet unsupervised around bodies of water
-Keep your pet hydrated
-Limit time in the sun and heat
-Keep your pet away from fireworks
-Make sure your pet has an ID tag or is microchipped

Chulita, VCAH's Resident Bearded Dragon and Greeter, went on a little field trip this past week! Our LVT Supervisor, Aileen, was her daughter's class reader and thought Chulita would be a great helper!🦎
The class was very excited by her appearance and got to learn about her environment, diet, and about some of the other animals we take care of here at VCAH!

Dr. McIntyre had an AMAZING visit with this Brownie troop yesterday! The girls came to learn about our hospital and the animals we treat in order to earn their Pets Badge!🐾
The girls held a Q&A session, observed a nose-to-tail exam, and got to view some really cool radiographs!🐶🩻
The troop brought along some feel better friends and get well cards for our sick patients which was incredibly sweet and thoughtful.
We have a feeling that we’ll be working alongside some of these incredible young ladies someday!🩺🐾

Happy National Veterinary Technician Week to our amazing Licensed Veterinary Technicians! 🎉 National Veterinary Technician Week honors the hard work and dedication of the licensed veterinary technicians who care for our patients and help keep the practice running efficiently. It’s celebrated every year during the third week of October and this year it runs October 16th - 22nd. Please take some time this week to recognize and celebrate the valuable contributions our LVTs make to the veterinary profession and society ❤️🩺🐈‍⬛🐕🐎🐄🦜🐇🐢 Thank you, Veterinary Technicians, for all that you do! 🐾

Happy National Veterinary Technician Week to all of our amazing, hardworking Licensed Veterinary Technicians! 🥳🐾🩺❤️ Veterinary technicians are similar to human nurses but treat a variety of animal species and are skilled in a much broader range of tasks and roles within a veterinary hospital. It’s actually kind of difficult to make a complete list of all the things that veterinary technicians do. Instead, it might be simpler to just list what they are not allowed to do. Veterinary technicians can do all the same tasks as a veterinarian, except: -Prescribe medication -Perform surgery -Diagnose a patient These 3 tasks are up to the veterinarians themselves, but without the assistance of good veterinary technicians it would be pretty hard to accomplish these things. Here at Valley Cottage Animal Hospital we employ 17 Licensed Veterinary Technicians. All of our amazing vet techs have graduated from a college with an AVMA accredited veterinary technology program, passed a national board exam and are licensed by New York State to practice veterinary technology. And just like our veterinarians, each LVT has to attend continuing education every year in order to renew their licenses. Please join us in giving special thanks to our great group of licensed veterinary technicians this week!!!
