Results of Klaus’s post (autopsy)
Extensive damage to his lungs caused by aspiration pneumonia with scarring throughout both lungs. His diaphragm and all other internal organs looked fine. The vet said his heart was possibly a bit enlarged, but he said that was most likely from it working so hard over the last couple weeks due to his condition. I can tell you first hand that Klaus’s heart was big enough to capture many many people, and it was filled with all our love. Allie went with me to drop him off at the vet, and I’ve never had a pup that was quite this hard to say goodbye to, leaving him there hurt, but we had to know what happened for sure.

You can rest now Klaus. 11/28/24 - 12/14/24. Nobody can say we didn’t try. Even when I gave up, you still told me you wanted to fight for one more day.

I came downstairs for Klaus’s 3:00am feeding, prepared his milk, and warmed it up. I went to get him, and he was gone, laying next to his brother and sisters. Nutmeg was distraught, looking at me, then back at Klaus while whining. I took his little body, and told her it was ok. Thanks again for all of the support. 😢

I don’t know what to think anymore. I’m just as confused as y’all are I’m sure. I took Klaus off oxygen last night around 5:00 pm. He had no energy, and couldn’t hardly lift his own head at that time. I was exhausted from the night feedings throughout the last couple weeks, and decided to go to bed shortly after 7:00 pm. I woke up at 1:30 am to p*e, and though I probably should go downstairs and get Klaus out of the kennel, I thought for sure he would have expired by that time. I couldn’t believe what I saw. He had gotten separated from his littermates, and was crawling around the kennel looking for them! It had been 8 1/2 hrs since he’d eaten, and when I picked him up he was obviously hungry because he was rooting at my hand. I couldn’t help myself, I fed him. I swear his breathing has actually gotten a bit better being with his litter. I guess he wasn’t ready to quit.

I hate this, but it’s time to stop. 😢

I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers. Your support means more than you’ll ever know. This decision wasn’t made lightly, and it’s tearing me apart. Klaus is tired, it’s time to let him rest. This quality of life is a nightmare for him, and I don’t see this ending good no matter what we do. I put him with his littermates, and shut off the oxygen machine. I was so looking forward to seeing his eyes, but it’s time to stop. I never reuse names, but I’m going to make an exception here. His brothers name will be Klaus, in honor of him. Sometimes I struggle with why things like this happen, but the things we learned from Klaus will undoubtedly save others like him. Maybe that was his purpose. Right now it doesn’t seem fair. I tried my hardest. Rest now buddy, we won’t forget you.

Klaus morning update 12/12/24.
I wish this was better news. A few days ago Klaus started struggling going p**p, I’ve been able to help him by giving him enemas. Yesterday that stopped working. I wasn’t terribly alarmed at first, because they don’t p**p every single time you feed them anyway, but last night up till now I’ve had no luck. A few different things can cause this, but it’s most definitely a death sentence if he doesn’t p**p today. I’ve been massaging his tummy, and trying all the tricks I know, but nothing worked last night. Wish him luck today, he needs it.

Klaus pupdate evening 12/11/24

I went to the vet this afternoon and talked to the vet about Klaus’s lungs, and he wants to try a couple different meds, so I started those tonight. He told me that the damage done to his lungs from the aspiration pneumonia could take a while to recover from. He gave me 21 days worth of meds to try to reverse the damage. I hope to see some results soon, he’s gotta start improving. I guess we’ll see what happens.

Video two of two.
Klaus gained more weight overnight and is showing small improvements, but his breathing is still very concerning. He needs constant oxygen. I’m posting two videos of his breathing. If you listen closely you can hear the fluid in his lungs and his labored breaths. I’m going to hold out a little longer and evaluate his condition. I hate to say this, but it may come down to a quality of life decision.

Ginger pupdate 12/10/24
Nutmeg pupdate 12/10/24
Whew, that was quite the intro.
Let’s start with Klaus, I think he probably has the most people following along. He was 5.15oz at bedtime last night, and I managed to get up for all the night feedings last night, by this morning he was 5.25oz, and that’s where he’s stayed all day. I stuck him in the kennel with Nurmeg and her pups just to show how far behind he is. His sister ginger is to the right of him in the second picture, and she dwarfs him. Ginger was born 3oz, and hit 2.75oz before making her miraculous comeback, which still has me in awe. That girl never got one single supplemental feeding and did it all on her own (in typical stubborn dachshund style), she’s definitely a force to be reckoned with. Today Ginger tipped the scales at an amazing 10.15oz!! The chocolate boy in that litter was 12.5oz tonight, and the dapple girl wins the award for being the most plump in the litter at a whopping 14oz!! I’ll post a video showing Nutmeg’s reaction to seeing Klaus again.

I’m a bit surprised this shaded red girl hasn’t gotten any interest. She’s a mini dachshund with a wire hair coat like her momma Violet, and she got her beautiful shaded red colors from her dad Theodore, who is half Russian. Theodore has been very good about giving that long sleek Russian look to his pups, and I expect she will be no different. I can’t wait to see what she looks like when she gets older!! She will turn eight weeks old on December 24th, so if anyone is looking for the best possible gift for the whole family, this little girl promises she won’t get in Santa’s way at your house on the night before Christmas. 😉
