Beautiful Siri....she went from us rescuing her from a high kill shelter...scars and wounds, used as a bait dog...to now in a warm home and so very loved, spoiled and cherished. Her mom sent this photo to me and I cannot tell you how much it warmed my heart. This is the amazing part of rescue....seeing them like this. Thank you Sarah for sending me this photo of precious Siri!

Thank you all for your donations and support on Giving Tuesday. 💙🩵💜 This picture is Poppy. She was a blind, diabetic senior we rescued from a high kill shelter. Poppy is wearing her Muffin's Halo, which was donated by Second Chance for Blind Dogs. Poppy's diabetes was difficult to manage but her amazing foster mom took such good care of Poppy, that her diabetes was finally stable and she was adopted by people who loved her. Poppy lived a couple more years until her tiny body succumbed to the diabetes. I will always remember sweet Poppy. I'm thankful we were able to get her well enough to find a forever home and give her a couple more years of quality life. We could not have rescued dogs like Poppy without your help and support. 🙏🐕

Giving Tuesday is here. I am sharing Millie today even though she passed away in 2017. Millie was an owner surrender to a high kill shelter. She had an ulcerated mammary tumor the size of a softball. It stunk horribly and bled. She had never been spayed. She had a mouthful of rotten teeth. She also had over 40 bladder stones. She was 12 years old and this girl was a medical train wreck. No other rescues would take her. We did. We saw the value in her life. The day after she arrived to us, she had a very long surgery to address all of her issues. I brought her home and day and night for several days I held her and took care of her. I gave her pain injections and gave her fluids with a syringe. By day three, she made a turn around and came alive. Oh my God...how I loved this girl. Those days holding her and praying for her created a bond that I cannot describe. I had just healed from my cancer journey and my ex husband leaving me after my diagnosis. It was a very rough time for me...as it was a rough time for Millie. Millie became my shadow. She went with me everywhere and she was the absolute sweetest, kind hearted dog I have ever known. She was so little but she would "mother" the other rescues and lay right next to them to comfort them. Millie was perfect. Truly perfect. I had Millie for 18 months and one day she started coughing and she had a difficult time breathing. The vet did xrays and saw 3 large tumors in her lungs. Her mammary cancer had metastisized. It was inoperable and that day, I said goodbye to precious Millie. My heart shattered. Was she worth saving? YES!!! Could we have done it without donors? No. No way. At that time, I was working a minimum wage job and my ex was not helping me financially so I, personally, had no money to contribute.
But now, I feel like folks don't think dogs like Millie are worth saving. I don't feel that my sacrifices and efforts are supported. I know the dogs we rescue are happy and no longer fighting for their lives...and that matters....but where have all the donations gone? Why?
Millie was a treasure and I still cry and smile when I think of her. I know one day, I will see her again. This is the power of rescue.

The primary function of animal shelters is to provide temporary housing for cats and dogs.
These facilities are intended to hold animals briefly, allowing their owners to reclaim them.
Being stuck in a cage 24/7 is inhumane and can have severe consequences for an animal's physical and emotional health.

Dogs and cats are sentient beings that need basic care, attention, vetting, and love rather than being treated as disposable property. The commitment required to care for pets, which can span more than 15 years, so it is best to think long and hard before deciding to bring an animal into your home.

IMPORTANT. We just celebrated our 12th year as a nonprofit dog rescue. But, I'm pretty sure this is our last year. My husband and I had a serious talk tonight about the future of St. Martin's Animal Rescue. For the past two years or so, we have had to cover expenses with our own income. Donations are way down. We used to have close to $2k a month in recurring donations. We had various fundraisers that were successful. Years ago, we were easily able to raise $4k or more for Giving Tuesday. This year, we have raised $240 from 2 donors. We have a handful of very loyal donors, but we cannot seem to expand our donor base.

The problem is that paying for the rescue expenses out of our own income so much is harming our own financial stability. We are getting older, and our futures are uncertain. We need to plan and save for retirement. This is our brutally frank reality. What does this mean for the future of St. Martin's Animal Rescue? Well, we have several dogs who are not adoptable for various reasons, so we will remain to care for these dogs for the rest of their lives. The dogs who are adoptable, we will continue to find the perfect humans for them. However, we absolutely will not be bringing in any new intakes. We just cannot sustain this anymore. Our rescue is different. We take in seniors with high medical bills and ongoing care. We take in behavioral dogs who are with us forever. I believe what we have managed to accomplish over the years has been meaningful and amazing, but if we cannot raise funds and continue to pay from our own paychecks, then we will find ourselves homeless.

I don't have words for how I feel about this. I am disappointed. I am angry. I am heartbroken. I feel like I will be turning away dogs who will end up being euthanized because I had to say no to all of them. I have a lot of emotions right now. I don't know what else to say.

We have had an amazing year. We have found loving homes for many dogs: Balto, Chula, Pepe, Max, Rosalie, Loretta, Dusty Mae, Roxie, Dusty, Bunny, Lola, Poppy, Betty, Momika and Mooyan.

We also experienced a couple of our babies who crossed over: Mr. Fox, a sanctuary dog at 15 years old and my own Jewel at 17 years old.

We have rescued another feral dog, Hugo, to join our other feral, Curly Fry. We have also rescued a few "project" dogs like Bear and Gracie. We still have Norman, Cal, and The Floofinator, who have been with us for several years.

We have two little guys who aren't project dogs: Kelsey and Tad, who are ready for their forever homes. Gracie is also ready and has made great strides.

We have had very serious vet bills. This goes with the territory when rescuing senior dogs. It's been very difficult, and even adding my own income isn't quite cutting it anymore.  We have several dogs on special diets, and food is rarely donated to us....medical care (emergency and routine), food, and medications are our largest expenses.

So, with this... we are asking that you think of St. Martin's Animal Rescue this Tuesday, December 3rd, for Giving Tuesday 2024. We are truly in need and can only continue what we do with your support. We are a 501c3 non-profit, so your donations are tax deductible.  We can provide receipts if needed. Please share with your like-minded pet loving friends and family. 🙏❤️

‼️SOS‼️ Gracie is really hoping that St. Martin's Animal Rescue is on your list for Giving Tuesday. We are a 501c3 non-profit, so your donations are tax deductible. We really need help to cover these medical bills and food. We are sinking, and I use my own income for the dogs, but that is depleted as well. 🙏 please consider a donation to help these dogs. Please share for visibility. 😓

This little cutie is Tad, but I call him Legs because he has these tall legs! Tad is only about one years old and he is amazing. He likes everyone and is great with other dogs. He is playful and energetic. Tad weighs about 20 pounds so he is a tall, lean terrier boy. We would like to find a foster to adopt home for Tad. His neuter appointment isn't until January, so he cannot officially be adopted until that happens but we don't want to wait that long until he is in a home with loving pet parents. A tall fenced yard is a must for Tad. An active pet parent who likes to hike, jog or go biking would be great for him also. He enjoys lots of toys and is treat motivated. He is a smart boy who is eager to please. Interested? Please email [email protected]

Also...please see our Gofundme in our bio or our website Www.stmartinsanimalrescue.com. We have not met our goal for medical bills. Please please help! Tax deductible!! 🙏🙏🙏💙💙💙🙏🙏🙏
