I have been a rehabber and giving wildlife educational talks with live birds of prey since 1979. I am a lot older now and can no longer do both . My husband Sam and I are going to concentrate on presenting

wildlife programs with our Barred Owl Athena and Red shouldered hawk Mohawk ,plus turtles and other birds, and will be giving these programs free at local different St John’s County Libraries. We can also do private groups . All programs must be inside for the safety of the birds . I will be getting my Carpal Tunnel Surgery in December , and as soon as I recover my husband and I will do programs.
To find a rehabilitation facility go to the FWC website ,and it has names and locations and types of wildlife people care for . Do not call us about injured wildlife . The FWC requires persons that are not licensed rehabbers to have a wildlife transfer license which you can apply for at the FWC website .

(The return of our most popular post, Year 8): As the weather turns colder the evening skies become more clear which relates to this satellite image that shows Florida at night. There's light all over the place. But see that red pin? That's roughly where you'll find the Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park which was the first place in Florida to be certified by the International Dark-Sky Association as a "dark sky" site. That means this is a place where you'll see more than a few stars -- even more than a few thousand. It's where you can see millions of them. It's an amazing destination for amateur astronomers (especially those who love taking pictures) or any armchair stargazer who's in awe of the Universe. Since this is a state park, call ahead for information on after hours admission and overnight events. By the way, we love this place even in the daytime. It's pure Old Florida with campsites and horse trails and land, lots of land, with the starry skies above. To read the article on its Dark Sky certification, check out http://bit.ly/2bENEbB.

We exhausted ourselves moving all the birds to their safe hurricane proof areas and then Sam and I brought the food etc for our tornado room . We have so many big trees which we love plus have had tornados just miss us . However new comers need to know we all just lucked out because we were located between the bands not in them so we really had no damage but this is very unusual most people will be hit hard so evacuate don’t stay

At the Aug. 1, 2023, Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) regular meeting, the BOCC approved a resolution accepting a one-time $100,000 grant from the Florida Department of Environment Protection (FDEP) to enhance the St. Johns County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Program. St. Johns County will use the grant to help establish a processing facility for HHW materials collected from the community. The grant period runs from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024. There are no matching funds required from St. Johns County. This grant is appropriated within the Solid Waste Fund.

“The allocated grant funds will have a pivotal role in offsetting the expenses associated with acquiring chemical storage lockers,” St. Johns County Public Works Director Greg Caldwell said. “This will enable the County to establish a processing facility for the efficient management of Household Hazardous Waste, ultimately elevating the level of service provided to the community.”

The County’s HHW Collection Program carefully disposes of items such as motor oil, oil filters, gasoline, wax, cleaners, pool chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, aerosol cans, antifreeze, batteries, and more. Residents can drop off HHW materials free of charge at the Tillman Ridge (3005 Allen Nease Road, Elkton) or Stratton Road (250 North Stratton Road, St. Augustine) Transfer Stations. For more information on accepted items and hours of operation, visit https://www.sjcfl.us/solidwaste/Locations.aspx.

As part of the ongoing Butler Beach Reach portion of the FEMA Dune Enhancement Project, St. Johns County will close one vehicle beach access ramp and reopen two more ramps in the area later this week. The Butler Beach Reach includes the shoreline from Ocean Hammock Park through Bryn Mawr Ocean Resort, in addition to a 1,500-foot section from Mary Street in the southbound direction. St. Johns County continues to maintain public safety by closing vehicle beach access ramps where there is a presence of heavy equipment on the beach.

• On Tuesday, July 25, the Dondanville Road vehicle beach access ramp will close. The A Street and Ocean Trace Road vehicle beach access ramps, which closed earlier in July, will still be closed at this time.
• The Matanzas Avenue (enter-only) vehicle beach access ramp will remain open. Vehicles entering the beach at Matanzas Avenue must exit at a southern ramp.
• On Thursday, July 27, the A Street (enter-only) and Ocean Trace Road (exit-only) vehicle beach access ramps will reopen.

“The contractor is making great progress,” St. Johns County Emergency Management Director Joseph Giammanco said. “They are on schedule and doing everything safely.”

For updates on this project, visit sjcfl.us/CoastalProjects/ or contact the Coastal Management team at 904-209-0260 or [email protected]. Please meet at the Hilltop Picnic Area near the parking lot. We’ll walk into the hammock together. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring your binoculars and/or a camera, drinking water, bug spray, and sunscreen.

If you find baby birds or mammals most are not orphaned google what to do if I find a baby bird etc .Go to The Florida Wildlife Commission website for information also .Just one of the many Bald Eagles we have rescued and rehabilitated back to the wild

12/07/2023

If you have injured or orphaned wildlife you can take it directly to St John’s Vet on US 1 or after hours to the Regional Emergency
Vet Clinic which is on the other side of the Street . For dangerous wildlife or wildlife violations call 📞 the FWC
If you live in another county you can look up on the FWC website they have a list of rehabbers by county. You can google search what do I do if I find a baby bird or mammal , most wildlife is not orphaned. Domestic birds such as Muscovy ducks , pigeons etc are not wildlife and are not handled by vet clinics unless you want to pay them. Look on line there are places that do domestic birds and farm animals.
For wildlife violations call FWC. Thank you 🙏 Melanie
