Lakeshore Animal Friends Mason County’s oldest Animal Advocacy Group, started 1993, is a non profit IRS 501(c)(3).

Serving Mason County, since 1993, we partner with Animal Control to provide spay/neuter assistance for all dogs and cats adopted from Animal Control and assume care for some needing to be fostered or have medical needs. Volunteers home foster abandoned kittens and cats, offer transportation to the community for cats to low cost spay/neuter clinics. All donations fund spay/neuter, medical, fostering, education and projects that support pets within our community.

One of our long time Lakeshore Animal Friends supporters adopted Dolly (now Daisy )today. Daisy had come from a very crowded house with too many cats. She is now in a wonderful home with a new sibling named Charlie.
We are hoping with time they will become best buddies.
Thank you Toni Monton - enjoy your new fur baby.

Larry…

You looking for a mini panther? Well, we don’t think it’s legal to own a panther so look at Larry, we think he is the next best thing. He’s soooo handsome. He has beautiful soft and silky fur and pretty golden eyes.

Larry was in a home overcrowded with cats. He didn’t get much attention and when we got him, he was very scared. He’s come a long ways and he’s ready to find a forever, safe and loving home.
He will need someone with patience, but once he trusts you, we feel you will have a new best friend.

Larry is neutered and up to date on his shots. He does fine with other cats. We don’t know about small kids or dogs.

Congratulations goes out to Martin.
Martin was adopted today from a previous adoptor of Lakeshore Animal Friends. Martin was one of the cats that we rescued from the house that had over 50 cats in there. He took some time to decompress, and he’s doing so much better now. Desiree Cook has adopted him and he will now live with Chevy girl that she adopted from us. Chevy girl also came from the same house that Martin did. We hope they remember each other.
We are so happy that they will both be well taken care of and loved. Thank you Dez.

Look at this handsome boy. This is Butler and he had a rough beginning, but he’s realizing that things aren’t always bad. He was very scared when he came to us. He was living in a house with about 50 other cats and a few dogs. He didn’t get the attention he deserved. It took a couple months but now he’s coming to us to get petted. He loves looking out the window at the birds and rabbits. He runs and plays with the other cats.

Butler is about 1-2 years old. He’s neutered and up to date on his shots.
He’s a good boy who needs someone to love him.

Call Lakeshore Animal Friends 231-794-7328 if you’d like more info on Butler.

Please take the two minutes to read, and share, this post as it reflects the thoughts of all of our LAF volunteers, and those of others involved with pet rescue.

We’ve been sharing an extraordinarily high volume of missing, or deceased, cat posts. We really don't understand why anyone is still letting cats free roam in 2024. Anyone who lets cats free roam intentionally shouldn't own a cat. (I'm not talking about an inside cat that accidentally slips outside, mistakes happen), but people who willingly let their cat outside. Cats should be indoors or in a controlled outdoor cat enclosure.

We are sure you’ve seen many community Facebook posts and it seems like every second post is about someone who's found a cat hit by a car or someone's outdoor cat who "usually comes home by now" but has been missing over a week. And always with extremely distressed and stressed owners heartbroken over something that is completely avoidable.

How long do outdoor cats live on average? The answer is clear when you realize that the average lifespan of an indoor cat ranges from 10 to 20 years, whereas cats who go outdoors typically live only 2 to 5 years. Some cats sadly pay for that freedom with their lives. The owner is willingly taking the chance of cutting their pets life short!

A cat that is allowed outside to roam can be hit by cars, and that happens a lot. If the cat doesn’t die it suffers terribly. LAF receives a lot of calls at all hours that a badly injured cat is lying in the street. What can we do … we are not vets!

Cats return home having been in a fight with other cats, dogs, porcupines, coyotes and other wildlife. We have seen the cats that have come home completely bloodied and torn up and yet the owners still let them out. And LAF often gets the call that the owner can’t afford the vet bill to put their cat back together.

They can ingest poison, bait or something else harmful. It’s a horrific death.

They could wander into someone elses shed or garage and accidentally get locked in without a person knowing. We’ve had to euthanize several cats that when found were in terrible condition.

They are at a much higher risk of many preventable diseases such as Feline leukemia, feline AIDS, feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), toxoplasmosis, distemper, and rabies can be difficult to detect and, in the case of FIP and distemper, impossible to test for.

There are nasty people out there who hate cats, and harm them by trapping, shooting or hunting them. And yes, LAF has had our share of these situations. It often costs the cat its life.

As pet owners and rescue volunteers we’ve seen first hand the damage to free roaming cats literally hundreds of times. This is why LAF’s practice is to adopt our cats as “Indoor Only”. Each cat is held in a volunteer’s home and given lots of attention and love. We invest a lot of time and resources in each cat, getting them fixed, up to date on shots, feeding them, providing litter and medical care. It breaks our hearts when one of our cats passes.

And to the person whose argument for letting cats outside was that "only two" of your cats have been hit by cars. Thank you for inadvertently showing exactly why people shouldn't let cats out. The fact that you think it's fine and normal that two of your cats have been hit by cars and that you are okay with that is outrageous.

Archie - look at him!!! Look at that tail!! We think he could have some Maine C**n or Ragdoll in him. He’s so dang cute and such a sweetheart. He wants to be with you- all the time. He sits on your lap, hugs ya, gives head bumps - and every once in awhile, a kiss.
Archie is around 6 years old- he’s neutered and up to a on his shots.
We had a couple visitors last night and both Laura and Ann fell in love with him.
Archie needs a forever indoor home. He is ok with other cats, don’t know about dogs- but he would be great with kids.
Call us at Lakeshore Animal Friends- come meet this guy- he won’t disappoint. 231-794-7328

Are you looking for a long haired, Maine c**n mix beauty? You should check out Wendy. She’s gorgeous and ohhhh so sweet. She loves attention, to be petted, brushed and scratched under her chin and behind her ears. She will sit on your lap, give you a little head bump and soak up all the love and attention she can get.
Wendy is about 2 years old, spayed and up to date on her shots. She tolerates the other cats, but she would be happy as an only pet.
If you would like to meet Wendy, give Lakeshore Animal Friends a call at 231-794-7328

Declawing is not generally recommended for any cat as it is painful and disrupts the cat's balance and motion. But if your cat is declawed, outside is an absolute nope. It's unsafe for a declawed cat to be outside as they don't have their claws to help them grip or defend themselves.

Our Story

LAF provides spay and neuter assistance to those dogs, puppies, cats and kittens adopted from Mason County Animal Control by providing certificates to be used at local veterinarians. We foster cats and kittens received from Mason County Animal Control or other limited situations and find them permanent homes. LAF also supports education and ethical treatment of all animals. LAF is a 100% volunteer based organization supported only by donations. Unfortunately, we do not foster or rescue dogs.
