Mystery Dog Illness? Should I be concerned?

This is a question that has been asked a few times the last few days. Here is a little of what we know and a little of my own thoughts. I don’t have extensive science to back all of this up, but will use my experience the best I can.

What we do know….
• Recent press is alerting people to a “mystery illness that is spreading nationwide”. The reports note it began in Oregon and numbers of cases vary.
• The illness starts with respiratory symptoms and can include a nasal discharge.
• NH experienced a similar “mystery illness” two years ago. This illness often had a long course and could progress to a pneumonia. The University of NH diagnostic lab collected samples and ran many tests. They found one organism (a bacteria) that was most common. This bacteria is difficult to cuture and is resistant to our typical first line antibiotics.

My take on what this means...
• We should practice any preventative measures we can. This could include, but is not limited to…
o Kennel cough vaccine and other recommended vaccines (to minimize secondary issues)
o Keeping sick dogs isolated and home from day care and public places
o Talking with our day care to see if they have any monitoring programs in place that will allow you to be more vigilant if dogs have become ill while at day care.
• We need to continue to use antibiotics wisely. Most respiratory infections start as a viral infection and do not require antibiotics. Let’s leave our antibiotics for the infections we know that need it.
• We need to remember that many illnesses (ie dog flu, kennel cough, distemper) can have similar symptoms just as the common cold, flu and covid in people can have overlap of symptoms.
• If you have a dog that has respiratory symptoms (or none) and is lethargic or inappetant, seek veterinary care promptly. If you are treating an infection and the dog is not improving or seems more listless then check back in with a veterinarian as soon as possible.
Spreading infections are particularlys tough to hear when we rely on boarding and social visits during the holiday season, but with vigilance (not panic) we can care for our pets no matter what the illness is and better their chances of improvement.

Always wonderful to work with people who love their pets. And does Mama Lu have a story! Thank you to everyone who takes a part in her care!

We are all feeling an incredible sense of relief as our girl Mama Lu made it through ANOTHER surgery…that’s 5 times under anesthesia in 3 years.

Some of you may remember that Lu went into cardiac arrest in April during a procedure to attempt to remove her eye…at that time, with that provider, we decided to try and keep the eye healthy….but that is not easy with a pitbull who insists on throwing herself around and slamming into things 🤦‍♀️

As the health of the eye got increasingly worse, it became clear that surgery was the only option to give Lu the quality of life she deserves….but I was so scared. With the guidance and support of her vet, and our friend , Mountain Brook Home Veterinary Care, Victoria Jardon DVM, last week we made the call to try surgery again with a good plan in place based on the medical notes from all of her procedures. Endless thanks to Dr Patey and Northwood Veterinary Hospital and Hugh Davis, DVM Veterinarian who were willing to help Mama Lu again (they did her first surgeries when she was rescued in the fall of 2020, and then spring 2021).

Lu and I feel “at home” with the team there and though I hope to never need their surgical services for Lu EVER AGAIN, I’m so grateful for the care she received.

She’s so tired she can’t keep her tongue in her mouth, but she’s home and she’s going to feel so much better!

I added a Daisy to the photo for anyone with a weak stomach but the incision looks amazing!

Goodnight Mama Lu followers and supporters.

💜🦄

Many of you have seen, but I am sporting a new look these days! I retired the trusty van in favor of All wheel drive. I love the way it handles and the improved gas mileage (as I am sure you will to when I doon't have to raise housecall fees!). i really miss the abundance of space and really wanted to make it to 300000 miles, but things fell into place and it was time to make the switch! Hope it doesn't create too much confusion!

Vet Visits are a real challenge for some dogs. Making them less challenging doesn't just happen in the vet visit. Here is a great opportunity to gain the skills that you might need to help your dog "prepare" for their visits and make it a more positive experience.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Just a reminder to be careful what you feed your pets (and what they may get accidental access to) We don't want any upset tummies for the weekend! Here is an article with good information on what foods may be safe (but do remember moderation!)
https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/nutrition/thanksgiving-foods-to-share-with-your-dog-or-avoid/ #:~:text=Turkey%20meat%2C%20sweet%20potatoes%2C%20and,should%20be%20avoided%20by%20dogs.

Also remember, if you are having guests you should provide a safe place for your pet to retreat. They may not be as up to being social as you are!

I will resume visits on Monday! Have a great weekend!

I got a good laugh when I saw this this morning so I had to share!

Thank you all for being patient while I am away. I will be back to a regular schedule after labor day. Please be patient as I try to catch up with everyone's needs. Routine and non urgent visits are booking at the end of September. I will continue to do my best to accomodate my clients urgent needs. Unfortunately, I will not be accepting new clients for the foreseeable future. End of life visits will be accomodated when I am able to do so. Thank you again for your patience!

26/07/2022

As many know Veterinary Clinics always seem to be busy! I have had to make the difficult decision to not accept new clients for the time being. I will reevaluate this decision at the end of the year. I will continue to provide home euthanasia (evaluated on a case by case basis as I am available) I feel this is an important service that I have not been able to provide during the last month due to the increasing patient load. Thank you for all the referrals and kind words. I want to continue to provide the best service I can to my current clients and am hoping this will help me do that!

30/04/2022

It's that time of year where I get a much needed break and travel to see family! I will not be seeing visits from May 11-28th. I will not be able to provide medicaiton refills during this time so please think ahead and contact me prior to the 11th so I can meet your needs. Other than end of life visits, I will not be scheduling new client visits until Mid June.

A good reminder to monitor puppies with new toys. Sometimes the unexpected happens! Rose was given a kong toy filled with treats. It was just a little too big for her and she managed to get it stuck on her jaw. Her tail never stopped wagging and she was the picture of cuteness however, she did not want to sit still to allow it to be removed. A little sedation and we were able to cut it off carefully. She was swollen, but once awake from the anesthesia she was ready to eat and play!

I have had soo many visits the last two days, but have truly enjoyed the beautiful drives in this gorgeous weather. But it's important to carve out some time to take care of my dog and get her out for a much needed walk and some training, even if it was for a short time!
