World class dog training secret! Your dog should EARN the freedom of being left in a room unsupervised or left out of the crate when you leave.

This changed my life when I learned about it before becoming a dog trainer. My first dog, Ozzy, I gave him freedom like that since the day I brought him home as a puppy. He chewed all kinds of things up. My walls, furniture, window sill, trim, shoes, clothing, you name it. I leave him unsupervised for 5 seconds and he was doing "bad" stuff.

Animals use their mouth to explore the world. It's totally natural and EXPECTED. It's up to you to teach them how to live in *our* world.

Not watching them also makes potty training harder because you don't catch them before or in the act of going potty inside. They learn to do it when you aren't around so they wait for you to walk out of the room.

The best way to prevent destructive habits and make potty training easier? WATCH YOUR DOG! If they don't get to do those things, it won't become a habit. Once it becomes a habit, it's very hard to break.

My recommendation is to always have eyes on the dog or crate it. I use baby gates to prevent them from leaving the room I'm in or I keep them on leash with me. Either way, I'm watching so I can correct if they put their mouth on anything inappropriate or if they start showing signs they need to potty.

One important thing I always ask is "Do you want your 75 pound adult dog to do this behavior?" The answer is always NO. So don't allow your cute little puppy to.

I followed this with Medusa, Gremlin and Brûlée. They haven't cost me a bunch of money in repairs like Ozzy did 🤣 I promise it works if you put the effort in.

Reminder! I'm going to Walnut Hill and Sandoval tomorrow! If you want a single training lesson and you're along my route from Desoto, let me know. Friendly dogs only, this isn't enough time for a dog to warm up to me.

Also, if more people want training up there I can make the trip once or twice a month to do lesson programs. Message me if you're interested!

Medusa and I attended our first scent work trial. We got two 1st places, a 4th and a 6th. The 4th place was my fault, we could have gotten 1st or 2nd, but I waited too long to say she found it.

I'm happy to have the chance to trial with her. I had the best time because I was working with her.

Sadie is out here starting to look like a pro! We hung out for about 15 minutes like this. Watching people go by and working on impulse control to stay in a down. She really struggles with impulse control 🤣

Sadie is having a big first day training in public! We've been to 4 different outdoor locations and we will go to atleast one store.

She definitely has the instincts of her hunting breed. She loves to follow her nose and chase so we will have to put a lot of work in for her recall!

A tip to help teach your dog a solid recall, use rewards THEY *love*. Your opinion about what you think they should work for is irrelevant. If your dogs favorite thing is hotdogs, use the freaking hotdogs as the recall reward. Don't try to make your dog work for affection if that isn't their favorite thing and definitely don't think they should listen just because you said so. That's how you teach them not to come when called 🤣

Majority of people wouldn't struggle with their dogs behavior so much if they selected a breed and puppy that aligns with their own personality traits and activity level.

For example, an extrovert who isn't physically active, but likes to go to wineries choosing to get a Lab AND picking the least active, confident, happy go lucky puppy. Or a highly active distance runner who likes to compete in races choosing a GSP and picking an active, happy go lucky pup.

If you have guests over a lot and want a human friendly dog, maybe don't select a guardian breed.

If you want a dog who can play with your friends dogs, don't select a breed where dog aggression is common.

My breed is the Rottweiler. They are NOT a breed most people should own. They are large, powerful and very strong willed. It's also common for them to have some level of human aggression AND/OR dog aggression. That's a dangerous combination in most peoples hands. If I see a Rottweiler out walking, I'm giving them plenty of space because I don't trust the humans capabilities to handle their dog. Though I give space to most medium sized and up dogs 🤷‍♀️ I have little faith in other people being able to control their dog.

Don't pick breeds based on looks or because you saw a cool, well trained one. Actually research them. If you only spend 10 minutes researching Rottweilers, you probably wouldn't see that dog aggression is common in the breed. That isn't listed on most of the average pet articles.

If you'd like help picking a breed or a puppy, I'd be more than happy to help!

A little about me

I am sure you have heard something similar to what you are about to read from every other trainer so I will keep it short and sweet. My name is Ashten Powell and like everyone else, I have loved animals for as long as I can remember. At 19 I purchased my first dog, Ozzy. During his first two years we learned a lot together and both loved learning new things. Ozzy is where my passion and love for training started and grew. Since then I have added two more dogs, Arlo and Medusa, who have both changed my life for the better.

I have attended the 12 week course at Starmark Academy. Upon completion of the course, I was invited to attend their 12 week Internship. I learned so much about balanced training approaches and worked with many different dogs during this time.

Training is both my profession and hobby. I truly enjoy meeting and working with all types of dogs. I look forward to helping as many dogs as I can. I hope you allow me the pleasure of working with you and your pup!
