World class dog training secret! Your dog should EARN the freedom of being left in a room unsupervised or left out of the crate when you leave.
This changed my life when I learned about it before becoming a dog trainer. My first dog, Ozzy, I gave him freedom like that since the day I brought him home as a puppy. He chewed all kinds of things up. My walls, furniture, window sill, trim, shoes, clothing, you name it. I leave him unsupervised for 5 seconds and he was doing "bad" stuff.
Animals use their mouth to explore the world. It's totally natural and EXPECTED. It's up to you to teach them how to live in *our* world.
Not watching them also makes potty training harder because you don't catch them before or in the act of going potty inside. They learn to do it when you aren't around so they wait for you to walk out of the room.
The best way to prevent destructive habits and make potty training easier? WATCH YOUR DOG! If they don't get to do those things, it won't become a habit. Once it becomes a habit, it's very hard to break.
My recommendation is to always have eyes on the dog or crate it. I use baby gates to prevent them from leaving the room I'm in or I keep them on leash with me. Either way, I'm watching so I can correct if they put their mouth on anything inappropriate or if they start showing signs they need to potty.
One important thing I always ask is "Do you want your 75 pound adult dog to do this behavior?" The answer is always NO. So don't allow your cute little puppy to.
I followed this with Medusa, Gremlin and Brûlée. They haven't cost me a bunch of money in repairs like Ozzy did 🤣 I promise it works if you put the effort in.
