Tonight we took Nala’s in-home training to different places.
Generalizing and proofing are when things get fun! Teaching a dog that our expectations don’t change depending on the situation or the environment.

I’ve been working with Remi and her owners since she’s been 8wks. At 4 months she is a complete rockstar! We are started to free shape sequences with different behaviors, teaching concepts.
Puppies can be hard and most people want their puppies to stop behaviors like barking, jumping, mouthing. I really try to hold off from corrections and really emphasize how to do the right thing, giving them a solution.
Chow’s get a bad rap with being hard to train because Remi’s been a dream!

It is crazy how fast time goes by! Today I got to work with my guy, Nigel. Nigel was in the first puppy class I trained for The Canine Canine Coach 10yrs ago.
We tuned up some of his skills since he and his family moved into a new home with a lot more action.
I feel old now 😢

We had a fun weekend!
A year ago I picked up Royce at 8wks and exactly a year later he got to run in his first wild bird trial.
He passed his natural ability test (TAN) with flying colors and came so close with a pass in Gundog.
It has been fun experience for me going from protection dog sports to bird dog. We’ll get it!

One of questions I get asked on a weekly basis is “How long will it take for my dog to become trained?”.
I wish it was a simple answer…
But the truth is we all have a different idea of what a well trained dog is because we have different expectations.
I like to relate dog training to fitness. Some people exercise to be healthy, look a certain way, or training for the next marathon/Ironman. Majority of people don’t want to do an ironman they just want to be healthy.
Same thing when it comes to training a dog, most of us just want a well mannered dog that listens to us.
But, just like with fitness we never reach a point where we say I am “fit” or reached my goal so now I can coast the rest of my life. We have to continue to work to maintain or improve where were at otherwise we regress.
It’s the same thing with a dog and it’s training.

It takes more work to handle an untrained dog over a long period of time than it doesn’t to train a dog.
A lot of times we feel overwhelmed when it comes to training our dogs.
In reality most people on want/need 3 things. Having their dog settle when they want them to settle, come when called, and waking nicely on leash. That’s it!
Training a dog doesn’t happen or night but over a consistent period of time. With dogs you get out of what you put into it!

Anyone who has ever had a dog that can be reactive or acts out aggressively knows that one of the hardest things is advocating for them.
Managing and training can be challenging but for most people it is navigating through that conversation.
Here are a few tips, your dog will thank you later!
1. Think of different scenarios you could run into beforehand and come up with a plan.
2. Have a response that is simple and straight to the point. “Sorry, He/She is not social”.
3. Avoid any conversation starters. “Sorry, He/She is in training”.
4. Remember that not every dog is the stereotypical “Golden Retriever” and that’s ok 👊🏻

Imagine working for someone that gives no structure, expectations, or constructive feedback.
You don’t have to clock-in, there’s no due dates, and it’s up to you to figure out how you’re doing.
But that person you’re working for is constantly getting frustrated and upset with you.
AND they speak a different language. So, when they talk you’re only understanding 10% of what they say…
Welcome to the life of most dogs!
Give them structure, clear expectations, and feedback. It goes a long way.

The unfortunate thing with dog training is that the training can be perishable.
I like to relate training a dog to personal fitness.
Building muscle or endurance doesn’t happen overnight. It takes consistency and repetition to see results.
There is no point in a fitness journey where the goal is reached and it can be maintained or improved without putting the work in.
Once a dog is trained to expectations, it is import to keep up with the maintenance or improve the behaviors 👊🏻
