We get so many questions asking why animals are not altered or why so many animals?
Bladen County is the 4th largest out of 100 counties in North Carolina. It is 887 square miles with a population about 30 thousand.
It is very rural and there are no large cities in the county. Elizabethtown is the largest city with around 3,200 people. There is only 1 full time vet in the entire county. The Elizabethtown Veterinary Hospital alters our feral cats, some of the rescue animals that we pull, and also the low income spay neuter program that A Shelter Friend runs. One vet cannot keep up with the need!
With the climate being mild, many dogs and cats run wild. The median income for the county is $27,000 a year. Because the rural nature of the county, animals wander into residents yards and they are kind enough to feed, BUT with so many people struggling financially, spay neuter is out of their budget. However, this can soon get out of control, hence the large number of animals in the county shelter. and few adoptions. The need here is great. That is why A Shelter Friend was formed, and why we fight so hard for every life!
