Let's talk enrichment! Giving plenty of options for appropriate activities is one of the keys to successful cohabitation. Treat dispensing toys and plenty of chews. Sometimes it's even as simple as hiding your pup's meal around the house, and sending them on a hunt. How are you setting your pups up for success this holiday season?

Meet Ika of Raining Dogs Rescue This little guy is so darling.. I had the opportunity to work with him yesterday on some socialization. We had an outing at Big 5, he experienced automatic doors, slick surfaces, and making friends, he explored new things slowly and courageously. I'm hoping to set up another session soon, I'd love to see this guy with a home for the holidays. As long as he's in rescue, I'll get in some puppy love, and maybe even find what type of job would suit him best. I'll do some early scent introduction when I see him next to see if he may be an alert dog candidate. ❤️ Not everyone has the capacity to foster, but we can all help in some way. It takes a village.

Hey everyone,
You may have been redirected here from my webpage, if so... Hi, yesterday I was reminded I'm far better at dog training than web page design. Somehow I deleted my entire webpage. 🤦 I'm just considering it an opportunity to update my page and resources page.

If you're looking for training help, you can contact me via text (510)342-9363, or email [email protected]

If you're looking for help with your webpage, I'd highly recommend NOT contacting me. 😂

As each holiday comes around the sundial, it presents new challenges for worried dogs. Halloween might not include backyard fireworks (yet), but it does offer surprises where dogs otherwise walk comfortably every day.

If you're not already walking your dog with a good treat pouch hooked to your waist, you might be missing a good opportunity to practice counter-conditioning skills. When you encounter any graves, ghosts, skeletons or jack o'lanterns, watch your dog's reaction. If you see any hesitation or concern, back away and offer food with a happy voice (you know the voice - the kind that brings neighbors to their windows with concerned expressions). The most important piece is to allow your dog to make his own choice about approaching.

It's not necessary to feed only approaches and curiosity. Feeding worry can also be very helpful.

If your dog is significantly frightened, leave and give it another go tomorrow; there are weeks to go for changing your dog's emotional response from fear to indifference (or, more likely, excitement about more cheese).

Muzzle training saves lives.

Muzzle training saves lives.

🚧 Is your dog comfortable in a muzzle ? 🚧
Meet Cricket the Shiba 👋🏼 Doesn’t he look insanely handsome in his muzzle?!😍 I believe that almost all dogs should be comfortable and confident in a muzzle. Yes, even “good dogs”.

Part of my puppy raising protocol is muzzle conditioning. It’s also a regular topic/exercise between me and my behavioural clients.

Muzzle conditioning, when done correctly, is no different than trick training. It actually starts the same way…. Boop muzzle = treat!

Here are just a few of the many reasons I believe dogs should be comfortable in a muzzle 👋🏼

☀️ Accidents happen. I hike with a muzzle in my pack. Why? Because even if your dog is the most well tempered dog, pain can still cause even the best dogs to bite. Need to remove 100 cactus from your dog? Need to carry your dog with a broken leg down a mountain? A muzzle helps your dog and you feel safe even in maximum pain.

☀️ Helps prevents blockages. I hike with some friends whose dogs love to gobble down bones, sticks, dead animals etc. No one loves dealing with emergency vet blockage surgery or cleaning up puke all night. Dogs that love to gulp down treasures on trails are a great candidate for muzzle conditioning.

☀️ Vet care. No matter how much cooperative care training you do - there may come a point in time that you decide a muzzle is the appropriate tool at the vet office. It lowers the nervous energy/nerves of some vet techs and your dog. Calmer energy never hurts. Trust me - vet teams appreciate this!

☀️ Grooming. As dogs age and their bodies get older and more painful- maintenance grooming can begin to hurt. Pain may cause your dog to snap or nip. Your groomer may feel more comfortable with handling part of the groom with your dog muzzled. Muzzle conditioning helps your dog feel comfortable too.

☀️ New dog introductions & interactions. Sometimes some dogs need a little extra help with dog on dog interactions. A muzzle helps keep their pointy end under control and may help keep the emotions of the handlers under control too.

☀️ Evacuations. Here in Kelowna the odds of being evacuated due to forest fires are a reality. If you aren’t home and a team is sent in for your pets they may be crated and or muzzled.

☀️ Household dynamics. Muzzles may play a part in managing house hold dynamics in play or day to day life. Working alongside of a trainer to help integrate muzzles into your day to day home interactions is advised.

☀️ When required due to breed-specific legislation. Unfortunately, some states or provinces have breed specific legislation (BSL), which requires certain so-called “dangerous breeds” to wear a muzzle when not on private property.

So the next time you see a dog in a muzzle - train your brain to realize that the dog is a good dog with an owner who values the confidence and safety of their dog and others around them. Provide space but don’t assume the dog is a “bad dog” or having a “hard time”.

There are many types of muzzles - so if you have questions about which muzzle is our favourite or best for your dogs please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Thanks!!!

Sarah

Adolescent dogs need patience and understanding.

"By understanding what our adolescent dog is experiencing we gain greater compassion and understanding. When we approach adolescence with patience we create a world that is predictable and gentle so our puppies grow up to be their best adult selves."

Teach them young! Love to see this! ❤️ Early training, socialization, and exposure can help build a pup's confidence and navigate potentially stressful environments as an adult dog.

To all my fellow , owners trainers and behaviourists. I see you.

I love being a I'm saying that it's literally the tip of the iceberg! I know what's going on underneath the water, I know what's going on in the background.

We do so much more than just toss food.

You are doing a great job keep it up.

People can and will say mean things. It can be demoralising and hard.
But don't let anyone else tell you other methods are better. This works. Science is on our side. We got you.
