This year has been a difficult one for me. My left shoulder's rotator cuff was ruptured and became so painful I couldn't use my left arm -- and I'm left handed. So I had reverse shoulder replacement surgery the end of June. The surgery went well and I went home after two days. But the day after I got home, I developed Calcium Pyrophosphate Dihydrate Deposition Disease in my left knee. It caused excruciating pain to where I couldn't put any weight on my left leg. I ended up in the emergency room and spent 3 days in the hospital and 5 days in a rehab facility. Fortunately my son was here and took care of the fosters. When he had to go back to work in Seattle, i checked myself out against their advice and went home. I had my left arm in a sling and had to use a cane to walk. Not exactly ready to care for a 6 dogs. Because of the ongoing debilitating pain for months, I had also become extremely depressed. Fortunately the San Francisco Bay area's vizsla community stepped up and every day a different person would come and help out p**p scooping, feeding, playing with dogs, and chaffeuring me to PT, doctors appointment, and dog food and grocery shopping. Some people drove 2 hours to help out! If not for the help of these wonderful people, I hate to think of what could have happened to all of us. I had nightmares of the dogs ending up in a shelter and me back in the hospital with my shoulder completely screwed up.
So the foster dogs were taken care of but the administrative and the rescue parts of the VRH were really behind. Especially fund raising. Rescue doesn't stop just because one is incapacitated. We brought in 4 vizslas (Bennett, Rex' Bodhi and Charlie) and incurred over $7000 of medical bills. Here is the break down of medical costs (food not included).. Bennett $685 for trainer and medical
Bentley $721 for emergency vet sewing his ear up after a scuffle with Bennett
Mimi $739 for removal; of a fatty tumor
Davey $260 for removal of fox tail up his nose
Blaze $600 for vaccines and 4 sedated nail trims
Charlie $1300 for training and dental
Rex $2300 for ultrasound, meds. x-rays and possible dental
medicine for fosters $500
