Vizsla Rescue Haven Dog adoptions can sometimes be a tricky thing, even under the best of circumstances.

But take a high-energy dog like a Vizsla, who typically needs lots of human loving and focused exercise, and add in another challenge—like old age, health issues,

Int’l /Am CH Alpine’s Long Run To Highlander aka Dex finished her Junior Hunter title this past weekend at the Sutter Buttes Pointing Dog Club’s hunt test at Hastings Island. One of the judges asked me if she was a field trial dog because she ran so big. At one point she held a point for almost 3 minutes waiting for me to get to her to flush the bird. Thanks to the Sutter Buttes Dog Club for a well organized hunt test.

Today we lost 14 yr old Rex. His owner died and the husband didn't want the dogs so he dumped them in the shelter. A rescue group grabbed the 9 yr old female but no one wanted Rex. VRH sprung him from the shelter and he was in hog heaven. At meal times he would bark and dance around the kitchen. Rex had bad teeth, 2 leaking heart vslves and severe arthritis in his hind legs. His back legs have been getting weaker and his pain meds weren't blocking the pain. He could barely get up from laying down and walking was very unsteady. The last 2 nights he was constantly barking and moaning. I had a vet come to the house and euthanize him. Although his life was crappy being a breeding dog outside in a kennel; i hope we gave him some good final months.

Update on Rex, our 14 yr old foster. His hind legs seem to be getting weaker but his coat is now smooth and his appetite is great. He has a bad habit of standing right under my feet so I am constantly tripping over him. This has resulted in a sprained ankle. There dogs are going to be the death of me!

This is a courtesy post. Dog is in California.

We have a wonderful 8 year old Vizsla from Mountain Pride Vizslas. Due to a changing life path which involves lots of travel and difficult housing setups we are looking for a new home for her. I have been working with Kit Richards of Mountain Pride Vizslas as well. She recommended that I reach out to you.
Our dog's name is Sitka. She is extremely well behaved and we trained her very well. She is in great health and fully vaccinated.
I can fill out an intake form but wanted to make sure I actually connected with you since our timing is tight. We are moving to Idaho in a couple weeks and still trying to figure out if we can have her at the new rental. We've had many people say they wanted her and then fell through which is why we're up against a deadline now. Kit said she would take her if nothing else worked out but I thought I'd reach out to you in case this might be a perfect fit for someone who is waiting for a wonderful dog.
Let me know if you might have someone interested in the near term and then I'll go ahead and fill out the paperwork.
With gratitude,
Phoebe

This year has been a difficult one for me. My left shoulder's rotator cuff was ruptured and became so painful I couldn't use my left arm -- and I'm left handed. So I had reverse shoulder replacement surgery the end of June. The surgery went well and I went home after two days. But the day after I got home, I developed Calcium Pyrophosphate Dihydrate Deposition Disease in my left knee. It caused excruciating pain to where I couldn't put any weight on my left leg. I ended up in the emergency room and spent 3 days in the hospital and 5 days in a rehab facility. Fortunately my son was here and took care of the fosters. When he had to go back to work in Seattle, i checked myself out against their advice and went home. I had my left arm in a sling and had to use a cane to walk. Not exactly ready to care for a 6 dogs. Because of the ongoing debilitating pain for months, I had also become extremely depressed. Fortunately the San Francisco Bay area's vizsla community stepped up and every day a different person would come and help out p**p scooping, feeding, playing with dogs, and chaffeuring me to PT, doctors appointment, and dog food and grocery shopping. Some people drove 2 hours to help out! If not for the help of these wonderful people, I hate to think of what could have happened to all of us. I had nightmares of the dogs ending up in a shelter and me back in the hospital with my shoulder completely screwed up.

So the foster dogs were taken care of but the administrative and the rescue parts of the VRH were really behind. Especially fund raising. Rescue doesn't stop just because one is incapacitated. We brought in 4 vizslas (Bennett, Rex' Bodhi and Charlie) and incurred over $7000 of medical bills. Here is the break down of medical costs (food not included).. Bennett $685 for trainer and medical
Bentley $721 for emergency vet sewing his ear up after a scuffle with Bennett
Mimi $739 for removal; of a fatty tumor
Davey $260 for removal of fox tail up his nose
Blaze $600 for vaccines and 4 sedated nail trims
Charlie $1300 for training and dental
Rex $2300 for ultrasound, meds. x-rays and possible dental
medicine for fosters $500
If you can help us out with a donation, it would be greatly appreciated. All donations are tax deductible. To donate using PalPal please go to http://vizslarescuehaven.org/how-to-help/. Checks should be made out to Vizsla Rescue Haven and sent to 6035 Sellers Ave, Oakley, CA 94561. Thank you for your help and hope your holidays are good ones! Kay

Meet Rex , our newest foster, who came from a No. CA shelter after his owner died and her husband did not want to keep him. Rex is 12 yrs old and has bad hips, 2 leaking heart valves, bad teeth and a small mass on his spleen. Despite his ailments, once he was put on heart and anti-inflamatory meds, he has become a very sweet typical vizsla. The highlight of his day is meal times. He dances in anticipation of food. He loves to roll in the grass. Although not a beautiful vizsla, he makes up for it in his love for people. Rex loves to lay snoozing next to the chair I sit in. The 2nd picture is when he first arrived and was rolling in the grass. Rex is in Oakley, CA. If you would be interested in giving this boy a wonderful life please contact me at [email protected]

The Vizsla Rescue Haven needs a foster dog taken to Santa Barbara on Friday May 31. Bennett is going to a foster home in Arizona and we have just found him a ride from So CA to Arizona on June 1 or 2. Now we need to get him a ride to Santa Barbara.Christine says the driver could stay the night at her house in Santa Barbara.

The foster dog is Bennett a 5 yr old male vizsla. He rides well in the car and will whine if he needs a potty break. He's a sweet boy but brain damaged so is slow to respond to stimulation. Please call me at 510-508-0665 ASAP if you can help him get to his foster home. Please share with others to see if we can can get Bennett a ride.

Meet Bennett, our newest foster, who came to us after biting the family's 16 yr old daughter. Bennett originally came from Elko, Nevada where he was running loose in the desert. It took the shelter 2 weeks to capture him. He was emaciated and his feet were blistered from running on the hot sand. Bennett was adopted by a person who used an electric collar to stop him from barking at squirrels and birds. After 5 months, she gave him to a Bay area family saying he was "too much" for her. His new family quickly found out that Bennett had quite a few issues. He had never been in a house so they had to teach him how to come into the house. He had a urinary infection caused by crystals in his urine. He also had a hurt back and had intense scratching to the point of creating sores. He also had skin sensitivity to being touched and had spells where he would just stand in front of a wall just staring into space. His new family got him healthy and consulted 3 trainers. One day the 16 yr old daughter bet over to pet him when he was just waking up and he bit her face. They reluctantly decided to send him to use. We will have to take him to UC Davis for consulting on his scratching and his staring into space as he faces the wall. If you can help cover the cost for Bennett's trip to UC Davis vet hospital, please go to http://vizslarescuehaven.org/how-to-help/ to make a tax deductible donation.

Blaze, our 10 yr old foster boy, has been limping on his left rear leg. Xrays showed nothing not even arthritis. We finally got a diagnosis of partially torn CCL ligament. He isn't an active dog rarely going faster than a walk. He is on the heavy side though. I have been trying to keep him quiet as his behavior does not make him a candidate for surgery or physical therapy. Can anyone recommend anything to help him? Do the ACL/CCL braces work? He is on Tramadol 3 times a day along with 300 mg Gabapentin twice a day.
