Is Your Dog Stressed? Reading the Subtle Signs 🐾

As professional pet sitters and dog walkers, we’re experts in reading canine cues. Often, what looks like "being bad" or "stubborn" is actually your dog feeling stressed, anxious, or uncomfortable.

Knowing these subtle signals helps you keep your pup safe and happy!

Common Dog Stress Signals:

Lip Licking: A quick, often repeated lick of the lips or nose when no food is around.

Yawning: Not because they're tired! Excessive yawning in a high-energy setting often signals anxiety.

Averted Gaze: Your dog avoids making eye contact or turns their head away—this is a polite way of saying, "I'm not a threat, please back up."

"Whale Eye": When your dog turns their head, but their eyes remain fixed on an object, showing the whites of their eyes (sclera). This signals high tension.

Low, Cowering Posture: Head dipped, tail tucked, ears back, often moving very slowly or trying to squeeze into a tight space.

Vocalizing (Whining/Barking): High-pitched whining or frantic, high-intensity barking can be a desperate call for distance or help when the dog feels trapped or overwhelmed.

Stiff Body Posture: A sudden freeze or tension in the body, with the tail held low and rigid. This is a common warning sign before a reaction.

What to do? If you see these signs, calmly create distance between your dog and whatever is causing the stress (another dog, a person, or a loud noise). Never force them to "face their fears."

⚠️ EMERGENCY PSA: Never Give Your Dog These Common Foods!

We love treating our pups, but some human foods are highly toxic and can cause severe illness or even death. As your professional pet care team, we want to make sure every BCS pup stays safe.

The Big 6 to AVOID:

Alcohol & Caffeine: Highly toxic, even in small amounts. Keep all drinks out of paw's reach.

Avocado: Contains Persin, which can cause stomach upset and diarrhea in dogs.

Macadamia Nuts: Can cause weakness, vomiting, and hyperthermia.

Raw Dough: Yeast can expand in the stomach, causing bloating and dangerous levels of alcohol production.

Cherry Pits/Stems: Contain cyanide that is released when chewed.

If you suspect your dog has ingested any toxic food, contact your vet or the Pet Poison Helpline immediately.

Where We Started

I’ve been around animals my whole life, I can’t count the number of pictures my mom has of me doing something with one of our animals we had. I cared for multiple people while in high school, before moving to the big city of College Station. I’ve lived here in College Station on and off since 2014.

In March of 2018 I started listing my services on Rover just as a part time hobby. For months I didn't get any requests. In July of 2018 I quit my job as an EMT and worked odd jobs until I started getting a steady flow of requests. Since November of 2018 I have been doing pet care services full time. I also became a Wag Walker in January of 2019. I have the greatest job in the world and wouldn’t trade it for anything! I love getting to meet different people and their fur babies.
