Make sure you are prepared! Your pets should have some type of identification in case they get lost. Even if your pet has never been spooked by fireworks before, you need to be prepared.

If your pet does go missing, create flyers with your info to share with neighbors and in other high traffic areas like a convenience store. Share on local lost/found pet groups. We admin the www.facebook.com/groups/mctnlostfoundpets group.

Keep your pets indoors if possible!

Are you aware of Bobcat Fever? Make sure your cats are on a good monthly flea/tick prevention. Even if they are indoors. Read more below.

We've seen a couple patients already this year diagnosed with cytauxzoonosis, also known as cytaux or bobcat fever. Here is some informative education about cytaux from our friends at VCA. If you have a question about your kitty's wellbeing, be sure to contact your regular veterinarian and schedule an examination.

What is cytauxzoonosis?
Cytauxzoonosis is a tick-borne parasitic disease caused by the protozoan organism Cytauxzoon felis. C. felis infects the blood cells of cats. It was first reported in the USA in 1976 and is now an important emerging disease in domestic cats.

How do cats become infected with this parasite?
The natural host of this parasite is the bobcat, but the parasite can infect all other members of the cat family, both wild and domestic. While most bobcats show no obvious signs of illness, infected bobcats become persistent carriers of the disease. The infection is spread to other cats through the bite of a tick - usually the Lone Star tick. Although other species of ticks may bite cats, the only other species that has been shown to transmit the infection is the American dog tick. Cats cannot catch the infection directly from an infected cat or from tick ingestion.

What are the clinical signs of cytauxzoonosis?
Clinical signs usually develop about 10 days after a tick bite. The initial signs of this disease are vague and non-specific, making diagnosis difficult. They include lack of energy, lack of appetite, difficulty breathing, and pale gums. On physical examination, many infected cats will be dehydrated, anemic (low red blood cell count), or jaundiced (yellow gums or yellow whites of the eyes) and may have a fever, increased heart rate, and increased respiratory rate. Additionally, the lymph nodes, spleen, and liver may be enlarged. Cats may appear to be in pain and not want to be touched. As the parasites multiply within the blood, they are carried throughout the body and are capable of infecting many organs. The disease progresses rapidly if left untreated with death possible in two to three days after the spike in fever. In the later stages of infection, a cat may become hypothermic (low body temperature), may develop seizures, or may lapse into a coma.

We occasionally receive requests to help obtain a dog house or any type of fencing to help contain a dog. The fencing could be something simple with t-posts and panels or any type of chain link fencing/pens.

If you have anything you are not using anymore we can arrange to get it picked up. We also always need pet food donated to our Pet Food Pantry. We help an average of 50 pets with food every month. Food can be dropped off to Adam Fox at Studio 7 Salon in Lewisburg or at Lucky's Cat House rescue center on the weekends.

Thank you for our community and supporters!

Our Story

The Lewisburg Animal Shelter Volunteers have rebranded ourselves in 2020 to evolve into the position we are now filling in the Marshall County community. We are now the Lewisburg Animal Alliance. We are still a 501c3. The Mission of the Lewisburg Animal Alliance is to provide resources in the way of volunteers, financial aide, and supplies for stray and abandoned animals in Marshall County. The Lewisburg Animal Alliance will also operate and maintain the local Pet Food and Pet Supply Pantry for the residents of and rescues based in Marshall County and distribute as requested and as the need arises.

In 2012 the Volunteer Program officially started at the Lewisburg Animal Shelter under the city's direction. From 2012-2019 it was overseen by the Police Department. A Volunteer Coordinator had constantly been at it's helm. In 2016, a Shelter manager was hired in at the shelter and operated the shelter from August of 2016-March of 2019. After her resignation, the volunteers maintained the operations and oversaw the adoptions of dogs until 2 new co-managers were hired in September 1st of this year. The Volunteers are very important to the maintenance and overall health and well being of the shelter and it's animals. The managers are now overseen by a 3 member Board of Directors who set policy and procedures for the shelter in it's current form. While the volunteers assist the managers, AWOs, and the city at the shelter, they are not the shelter, and any questions or inquiries regarding the operations or the dogs of the shelter can be directed to the Shelter at 931-359-5948 or by email to [email protected].

We were able to operate the Lewisburg Animal Shelter Volunteers Cat Program from 2017-September of 2019 at the shelter with the city’s permission. When the Shelter Board took over, that program was discontinued. During it’s run, the vols adopted out over 50+ cats in their care.
