Rest in Peace Sammy. You were obviously much loved.
Sammy (Peewee) came to us about 10 years ago from a shelter in SoCal. He was eventually adopted out and had a wonderful life. The photo on the right is from when he arrived.

Poor Lydia can't catch a break. We have been dealing with an invasive, but non-cancerous tumor on her side for several years. Now cancerous growths have appeared on her chest, belly and the possibility of bone cancer in her hip. She has a follow up appointment in a few weeks, but got some pain meds today. We don't want to put her through a surgery for one thing if something else will take her anyway. For now, it's just a waiting game. 😔

Ten years ago tonight we learned the 124 dogs from the defunct Olympic Animal Sanctuary had arrived in Golden Valley, Arizona. The dogs had all been loaded into a semi and disappeared from OAS a few days previous. We began making plans to recover the five Gabbs Dogs who had been sent to OAS after the big rescue in 2008.
Robin Wenham arrived in Golden Valley on January 1st and was able to locate Herbie, Itsy and Tippy. We never learned what happened to Dixie and Able. With two empty crates, we agreed to take the wolfies who were all but shut down. Over the following years, we took in several more OAS refugees. All have since passed away except Bandit and Walter.
Thoughts go out to all the OAS dogs tonight and all the rescues and owners who took them in. And all who protested at
OAS and the volunteers who cared for the dogs in Golden Valley.

Breakfast with a rare Safe Haven Peach.
The little dwarf tree produced five this year. (One is still on the tree.)
The other two trees have plenty of ripening peaches, but they are the size of golf balls and just as plump. I guess the early heat got to them.

Remember Patti and Honey? They were rescued two years ago from a shelter in SoCal. They were adopted by some wonderful folks who take in seniors. Sadly, Honey passed away from old infirmities. But Patti recently celebrated her 10th birthday. She is blind, but still going strong.

Today we said goodbye to Miss Sally, one of our forever fosters. Sally came to Safe Haven six years ago. She had a habit of biting people, so she never left.
Age took its toll on her and at 17, she was blind, deaf and slowly dwindling away.
Run Free, Sally, free of pain and enjoy all the new sights and sounds on legs strong enough to carry you on your next journey.

Bittersweet memories. Toto and Wendy were little feral pups that came to Safe Haven as Lobo and Coyote Girl. They have since past away, but had a life of love and adventure in the big city before moving to the rural hills of California.

Safe Haven was surprised and grateful to receive a very generous donation last week from a donor that wished to remain anonymous. Very generous!
Like all rescues, we sweat that surprise vet bill that can be devastating. With a bunch of seniors in sanctuary that can be a real possibility.
All the dogs can sleep easy tonight in warm cottages knowing that there are folks out there who, even in death, think of them and wish them well.
Thank you, Mr. Anonymous. May your memory be a blessing.

These youngsters were rescued from a reservation in Utah. They are living in a foster home with other dogs and things are getting a little crowded. If you are in Utah, or ready for a road trip after weeks of cabin fever, please check them out. They are up to date on vaccinations, spayed/neutered and good with other dogs.

Bernie has a bad habit of getting lost on walks. Today he tested the Fi Smart Collar Series 3. After each of his detours, he came back, but that's not guaranteed. Some days he has kept me searching for an hour or two. This should make things easier. So far, highly recommended.

On New Years day nine years ago, Robin Wenham picked up the three Gabbs dogs that had survived almost six years at the Olympic Animal "Sanctuary" from Golden Valley, Arizona. With two empty crates, we also took "the Wolfies", with the backing of Lake Tahoe Wolf Rescue. The Gabbs dogs (Herbie, Itsy and Tippy) and "the wolfies" (Gypsy and Denali) were all close to death, but lived many more happy years at Safe Haven. They have all since passed, but we were happy beyond words when they came "home".

RIP, Toto.
Toto came to Safe Haven in 2009 as a little feral Rez Pup. He and his sister Wendy, were soon adopted by a good friend to Safe Haven, Robin Wenham. They lived long lives full of adventure. Toto joined his sister today to begin their new journey somewhere beyond the stars. You will be missed, Toto.

Our Story

We are a private small Rescue Rehabilitation Center and Sanctuary. The type of dogs rescued are feral or at-risk, under-socialized from kill shelters, breeders turned hoarders or failed sanctuaries. We endeavor to give a comfortable peaceful place for decompressing and healing in a spacious healthy environment.

Our Mission is Hope from Despair. We believe our dogs regardless of age or behavior should thrive and enjoy a healthy life as though they were in a normal home environment and not homeless.
